A "Winter Warmer" mixed song/music session will be taking place at the Guildford Institute on Friday 28th November 2009. It will be led by local musicians David Steptoe and Nonny Tabbush. Details are as follows:
Music commences 8pm = finishes 10.30 (we have to be completely out by 11 pm). Participants and audience equally welcome. Cost is £3 per person.

The Institute can be found in Ward Street in Guildford (running off North Street, and almost opposite the town library). There is ample free public car parking nearby, and the railway station is within about five minutes' walk.

All are welcome, the more the merrier!

I speak from a position of almost total ignorance, never venturing by choice into the county of Surrey (nor, indeed, anywhere south of the Thames if I can help it) but is is my general impression that things have been happening in Guildford on Fridays for rather a long time.

I googled this Bedworth place which I discover consists of some sort of singaround at the (ahem) Conservative Club (though Duncan McFarlane is listed as a contributor . . . hey Dunc have you taken a wrong turning?)

Personally, I have infinitely better things to do this Friday, but I fail to see the point of one venue slagging off another.

One of the reasons there is upleasantness in here is the people who post about something without reading what has been posted . Where pray Ms Easby is ANYONE slagging anyone (Or anywhere) in the above posts ?

Must admit that it doesn't look to me as if anyone was saying anything bad at all about this event. It seems that Roger would have been very interested in coming to Guildford but for the fact that he'll be in Bedworth. Diane's post actually gives quite an unfair view of Bedworth which is a well attended and much loved festival, website here! Apologies for thread creep Irene!

Actually I came on this thread for the same reason as Roger, to send apologies to Irene for not being able to attend as I'm singing at Bedworth. I've only managed to get along to Guildford once despite living down the road but that's mainly because it's on a Friday & I'm usually at a festival somewhere.

Know you'll have a Fab evening, enjoy!

Harrumph .. thanks for pointing out the error of my ways Roger .. I was busy booking other things, and had 2009 on the brain. Indeed it is 2008!

I must admit that I can't see any slagging off of one venue by another - I think Roger was just pointing out that I'd got my date wrong in what I take to be a mildly humorous manner. For the record, also, I'm not a venue, and am not involved in this one in any major way, apart from turning up to support it. Although the Music Institute club in Guildford (which I do have associations with, and occasionally put some publicity stuff out on the Cat about) celebrated it's third birthday in September, and meets twice a month on a Friday, this lsession not run by the club, having been instituted by Anna Tabbush as a trial run last year. The experiment proved to be successful, and has been extended up to Christmas. The session runs at the same venue as the club, in the intervening weeks between club bookings, and the attendees vary from week to week, and on the whole do not tend to be club members (a large number are drawn from Anna's community choir membership, and local musicians)
Each of the sessions is being run by different local musicians - on the last occasion the leaders were Paul Tabbush and Andy Johnson.

My only involvement in posting here is attempting to raise consciousness of the fact that the session exists, as it obviously helps if sufficient people turn up to make the session enjoyable. We had only a few last time, possibly due to the fact that publicity had not filtered through ... hence this posting.

Thanks for the good wishes Hilary and Roger = hope you enjoy Bedworth!

I WONT be at Bedworth (Tried it once , it didnt fit) but as a working musician I am NOT inclined to drive thirty miles and then pay to play , just for fun ! Especially as I can get to a good bash on a Friday on (Free) public transport !
And Diane , that ons IS North of the river !

I'll be somewhere definitely north of the river and absolutely NOT in a Conservative club. I'll be in disguise so if Terry's there, he won't recognise me.

As a matter of fact, it's no one else's damned business where I am, which is why I find it quite ridiculous when someone whinges that someone else's event conflicts with the one they are planning to attend. Who the fuck actually cares? Just as long as you can manage to avoid everyone on the current list of who you would least like to run into, everyone will be doing whatever they actually want.

Don't think I'd want to go to a Conservative club either - twould feel rather wrong.

We had a good night at the Guildford Institute, a struggling concern which has just lost the bulk of its funding from the University of Surrey. Previous sessions didn't have a fee,Terry, but the minimal one we now pay is intended to cover the wage of the caretaker who has to be on the premises to look after them and lock up , and also to man the small bar - no fee,no bar and no venue!!

If anyone is interested the next session will be in a fortnight's time on 12th December.
