I also have a copy of The Scottish Students' Song Book, a goodly collection of national and folk songs which do not conflict with the National Song Book. I found this 60-year-old copy on a market stall, for a couple of quid. It was a Christmas present from mum & dad to their son, according to the inscription. These days, the boyo would be expecting an iPhone......

Anyone know if this in on line too?

I will have to explore this! Looks really neat and interesting. Is the "About this Book" also from 1905? I wondered at the spelling of "Keltic" and reference to "Scotch" children.

How wonderful! These were the songs that I learned at school in the 60s and I had been looking for that particular version of Barbara Allen for quite a while.

This is a real treasure trove!

Is link above the same as Nelson's New National & Folk Song Book? I have Parts I (1954) and II (1955) Vocal Parts in both notations.

My copy of this is a Words and Voice Parts only (In Old Notation and Tonic Sol-fa) edition - and lacks the preface. So I was spared the Keltic! What's surprising is that Stanford, the editor, was Irish (a Dub, to be precise). Wonder how common it was at the time?

I also think it might be a good trove of tunes for the dulcimer.

Thanks for that. I was expecting it to be the usual mix of Early One Morning, Cockles and Mussels, Loch Lomond etc, but it's more interesting than that. I'm amused by the quaint reference to the "Keltic" tunes and the patronising assumption that these may cause problems for English children.

It makes an interesting comparison with Howard Goodall's "Song Bank", aimed at primary schools http://www.singup.org/songbank/

Nice to know that Susanna Blamire's song was still being sung over 100 years after her death.

"And ye shall walk in silk attire" - great opening line (though the original poem is actually called "The Siller Croun").
