Case for the NSPCC there I feel! Many of the evaluations indicate how strongly people feel about the quality of the singing and singarounds at Saddleworth - several have told me that they are some of the best in the country. Maybe they equal those at Cleethorpes Geoff T? Right back in the early days of the Festival, I wanted it to be a "singing" festival, so enlisted the help of many friends - including Mo and Joe, Geoff Turner etc. - but I'd also like to mention (and thank) the Shellbacks for their contribution to making this happen. It's so sad that they've finished now - or will have at the end of Hull weekend - so thanks very much to all of you! I hope you come back next year anyway and carry on the singing!! Ali x |

All I did to help was to watch the water flow into the river! |

I forgot to say thanks to all those who sang at the great Friday night singaround. Should also mention the maritime session on Sunday...Ingrid (Temple) kept saying to me "What great songs and what great singing!"..and she was so right. I felt a great lump in my throat singing "The leaving shanty" (for Johnny Collins) backed by Geoff ,Barry and Ingrid and the seemingly ubiquitous Young'Uns...and a whole room full of great singers. Subject: RE: saddleworth 2009 From: Pistachio Date: 23 Jul 09 - 05:06 AM I remember when my daughter turned on BGT(?) on the Sunday morning after a wonderful night in Hodgsons at Beverley Folk Fest(Jun 09) and I said to her 'BGT was in Beverley last night, without the cameras and hype' and there was a room full of 'Susan Boyles' - from whom came the most magnificent sound. That talent is alive and kicking in so many pubs/clubs and festivals and it comes with atmosphere and generally no heartache (WILL I WIN tonight?) It is, to me, one of the best medicines, a therapy of lifted voices joined in harmony and no TV can capture it or the sensation of elevation when voices join in song. Wow. Saddleworth had it and I'm sure Warwick will too - and wherever you head next. It's a tonic that can't be bottled, and I'm looking forward to the next sip. Thanks to everyonewho made Hissyfit's Friday night buzz. I (we) had Such a brilliant weekend. La Kelly is well and truly back. Lots of Love, Hazel. |

Obviously from a personal perspective it was nice to be paid for attending this time :)...but also enjoyed the wealth of talent at the sessions & concerts I managed to get to; I particularly enjoyed the Askew Sisters who've just grown so much as performers since I last saw them play in Southampton about 3-4 years ago; and also Ewan Maclennon's consummate musicianship. Well done to all involved- hope to be back soon. |

Stanley Accrington kept us amused as ever and it was wonderful to hear Ewan Mclennan for the first time and the War of the Roses. Great to see and hug so many friends and knowing that I am seeing most of them again very soon. Well done to everyone! |

Yes guest Tim, the Young'Uns were 'unbelievable'. Once again younger talent shines through at Saddleworth. Were there really only 3 of em, sounded like an acapello quoir at times; great humour, clever original arrangements of soem great songs and brill instrument playing too especially on the 'ice cream vam'. Great to see Linda and the full Hissyfit back again; the lovely voice of Jan Shevlin of Better Late; the hilarious New Ropes; always fab Box Fox and a great set and sad farewell to Eric Bogle & John Munroe as they retire from touring; + many more. Sorry i'm waffling on.....so many thanks Ali and all the committee. Roll on the 13th ! |

Hopefully, though, I can get some sleep now - 1a.m. Thursday, 2a.m. Friday, 3a.m. Saturday, and 2.45 a.m. Sunday is no good for my age! And I can't imagine who'd finished off the 2 bottles of Jamieson's which I found in the bin this morning! Maureen and Joe, and Dave and Ann Howden came back to my flat after the wonderful Survivors Session, so I blame them! Did you hear us singing Miner's Life? I still can't believe it took 4 hours to let everyone do 1 song in the final session - I found it all really emotional. So many highs over the weekend - far too numerous to mention. But I loved my MCing spots - some superb artists. And of course, seeing everyone again. Dave and Ann Howden say that my face lights up when I see people - but is it surprising when there are so many lovely people coming to Saddleworth? Thanks all of you. Ali xxxxx |

Think ossonflags was their secret weapon ! Many thanks to Alio and all committee members/stewards/volunteers/helpers - brilliant work as usual. I warned you to bring yer wellies and I was right (and then forgot to take mine with me! - doh!) Loved sense of humour on campsite where stewards had put up sign announcing "Life Boat station" by stewards tent. I was one of the silly buggers camping in a tent all weekend but I am glad to say that the tent,although severly tested,did its job and remained watertight. Had a superb session outside The Waggon late Saturday night where entertainment was provided by The Free Sandwiches band and my mate Muppett. All in all a really smashing weekend. |

And 2 enterprising stewards have made signs directing campers to the shallow or deep end of the swimming pool! But they're all in such good spirits that it's amazing! The Civic Hall was full for the concert - 400+ people - with fantastic guests including Eric Bogle and John Munro, and Strawhead. But for many the highlight of the concert was our own Hissyfit, who were just brilliant! Eric and John, of course, were just wonderful - there couldn't have been anyone in the hall who wasn't joining in the songs. Very emotional. Off to bed now - long day ahead tomorrow! Ali x |

At least if a notice of the festival is 'visible' and can be viewed it will attract attention from existing and 'new' punters who I'm sure will have the patience to wait for full details - especially when Alio has already explained that the organisers are stretched to the limit and that the website will be updated soon. I know time is getting tight - but if anyone is still making their mind up about coming to this festival - don't think about it - just book it or put it in your diary and turn up - It's a smashing festival and you'll love it! |

Too many festivals are leaving it very late in the day for getting a decent level of info out on the website (not just because of funding uncertainties, which we can all understand) and as a result are probably losing out on attendees simply because not everyone can make important decisions and arrangements (things like accommodation, getting time off work etc) at the last minute. |

Seriously though, the Festival is going ahead. I won't be doing the artists stuff as I've got too much on, but I'm finishing off bits and pieces and letting the artists know who the new contact is. I'll still be doing the weekend desk, and they've asked if I'll MC some of the main concerts as I go to quite a few festivals MCing now - so that's lovely. I'll be staying as Festival Director until the AGM in November - after that, I don't think the new committee feel a Director is necessary. The dates are July 17th to 19th, and artists booked - apart from Bob Fox and Hamish - include Eric Bogle and John Munro New Rope String Band Strawhead Triban Hissyfit Askew Sisters Gene Burton John Prentice Stanley Accrington Barrie + Ingrid Temple Zoe Mulford Copper Kettle Better Late Hopefully the campsite won't be a problem. The police were very concerned about the incidents and did prosecute. I got apologies from the Inspector - my phone call to ask for them to come down to the site and informing them of the potential threats was neither recorded nor acted upon. BUT there is a problem. Due to work and family pressures (my parents are 88 and 93 and very frail, and my daughter's just had her 4th baby, so I'm supporting them all and working through the night at the moment) I've pulled out of doing the artists now. So the committee are meeting on the 15th of this month to decide if they can go ahead with the few festival with the few people left to run it. I'll come back to Mudcat as soon as I hear their decision. Love Ali x |
