I'm going for the first time for about 8 or 9 years (hurrah!)and I know a few here used to be regulars and may still be so.

We've splashed out this year and (hopefully) got a warm comfy house rather than the previous freezing flats so really, really looking forward to it. Only downside is that I won't be able to drink as much nowadays - though I can still see a few sliding down over the week!

Don't think there is much change from when you last came Joe, Treasure hunt organised by Wombat and myself. Hopefully on the 29th there will be a ceidlieh at the Coliseum, scratch band etc etc.

Well Silas the Whitby ff (week and Moor and Coast) has a large fringe of singers players and friends as well as quite a number of retired folky people who think that Whitby with all its pubs and generally welcoming music and song scene is an alternative at new Year to watching Andy Stewart on the television

So for a number of years a crew from Yorkshire/Notts and sometimes further afield go to Whitby for a few days to celebrate and see the new year in

Well, Silas, if it is the same as when I used to go (hich it seems to be) its a really friendly gathering of folkies singing in the pubs (Station & Endeavour?)lunchtime and night most days but also as mentioned by Raggytash and Ray there will be a ceildih, treasure hunt and Neil's fiendishly difficult music quiz to give a bit of variety.

I've really missed going for the last few years as it is simply the most relaxing way of spending the week after Xmas

Do come if you can - everyone is very welcoming of new faces.

Eeh that brings back memories, the last time I played in the New Year's scratch band it was about 1991 and the ceilidh was up at the Met in that big ballroom :)

Silas, lots give at Whitby at Christine & New Year.

Whitby over the years has become a retirement village for ageing folkies, there are dozens of us who have bought places here and although it is factionalised (is there such a word) we all play together at some point during the course of time.
At Christmas and New Year many people come to Whitby for a holiday and several folkies are regular visitors not only at this time but throughout the year.
Whitby is a small former fishing town on the east coast look it up on the web

Fisherlads, sadly the fishing industry in Whitby as elsewhere (as I suspect you know) has undergone a massive decline. With 9 (?) trawlers, approx 25 charter boats, about 5 people on the fish key and less than 100 in the processing plants I would estimate the fishing industry employs less than 250 people in the town. The NHS employs more and the biggest industry in the town has to be tourism.
A sad reflection on the state of our once proud fishing industry but true none the less

Just want to say how much we enjoyed our first New Year in Whitby, and to thank all those who organised the various events.

The treasure hunt was great fun and took us into some pubs we'd never entered before (and may not again in one case in particular...!).

We had a great time too and really nice to meet new and old friends and put faces to Mudcat names! We kept up our historic tradition of not winning anything (much to Eddy and Stuart's disgruntlement as I was on their team in the quiz)

Thanks to Jude and Raggytash and everyone else who made it such a memorable return - we'll be back next year!

Meanwhile hope to see some of you at Queensbury Folk Day on March 7th! We are just checking out that the outdoor camping will be available for you hardier types though we have decided that we can't provide indoor camping for this first year. Still it is only an hour or so drive from most places in the Yorks/Lancs/Durham area so do-able in a day!

I can't quite remember is Queensbury the Highest Village in England? The above mentioned Brrrrrradford!
