Subject: So who's going to Whitby at New Year?
From: Joe G
Date: 27 Nov 08 - 04:55 PM

I'm going for the first time for about 8 or 9 years (hurrah!)and I know a few here used to be regulars and may still be so.

We've splashed out this year and (hopefully) got a warm comfy house rather than the previous freezing flats so really, really looking forward to it. Only downside is that I won't be able to drink as much nowadays - though I can still see a few sliding down over the week!

Don't think there is much change from when you last came Joe, Treasure hunt organised by Wombat and myself. Hopefully on the 29th there will be a ceidlieh at the Coliseum, scratch band etc etc.
The usual suspects will be in attendance.

Booker Padgett Deakin Speake (John, Ray, Nigel and Malcolm)

The Barnsley Lads and Malcolm (of Speake and Lowe)

Hope its a bit warmer, forget what the theme of the fancy dress is although Steve Robinson told me on Monday

Jude (Lady Aelfreda) is I believe in warmer climes at the mo' but I presume will be co-ordinating proceedings

No doubt the treasure hunt and very difficult quizzes will all happen

Well Silas the Whitby ff (week and Moor and Coast) has a large fringe of singers players and friends as well as quite a number of retired folky people who think that Whitby with all its pubs and generally welcoming music and song scene is an alternative at new Year to watching Andy Stewart on the television

So for a number of years a crew from Yorkshire/Notts and sometimes further afield go to Whitby for a few days to celebrate and see the new year in

Well, Silas, if it is the same as when I used to go (hich it seems to be) its a really friendly gathering of folkies singing in the pubs (Station & Endeavour?)lunchtime and night most days but also as mentioned by Raggytash and Ray there will be a ceildih, treasure hunt and Neil's fiendishly difficult music quiz to give a bit of variety.

I've really missed going for the last few years as it is simply the most relaxing way of spending the week after Xmas

Do come if you can - everyone is very welcoming of new faces.

Carl and Leon Hogsden are performing at Mickelby Folk Club on Saturday Evening.

This should be a really exceptional night as Carl has rarely performed in the north since splitting with Amanda Threlfall.

Sadly we will not be up again this year. The early curfew for kids poses problems for us. We might try to get up for a day though so when the events a sorted knowing what's happening when would be useful.

I shall be here already as we live here but it's unlikely that we'll be able to see much of anyone as Stuart is seriously ill. Some of you will know Stu from when he was Horwich's bass drummer and if he's well enough to be wheeled down to The Station for an hour or so over the New Year I'll try to get him there as he'd love it.

I went to the Coliseum last night to ensure that sufficient supplies of beer and wine had been ordered for the Ceilidh, they asked if I knew what sort of numbers would be attending on the Monday evening, so who's going to the Ceilidh?????

As for the beer I told them LOTS, they can get it on a sale or return basis

Eeh that brings back memories, the last time I played in the New Year's scratch band it was about 1991 and the ceilidh was up at the Met in that big ballroom :)

Hi All
Well I'm safely back from safari & could bore you all with photos of wild animals over New year unless I'm bribed not to with lots of beer!
Think Nick's covered everything but to recap:
Come Prancing in The Coliseum on Monday 29th
Treasure Hunt Tuesday 30th
New Year's Eve in The Endeavour
Not sure when people are turning up but Sunday nite there'll be our usual session in The Station & we'll be using there for other sings as well.
Some f you will be deflighted to hear that there won't be any daft songs to practive for New Year's Eve this year.
See you all soon

Silas, lots give at Whitby at Christine & New Year.

Whitby over the years has become a retirement village for ageing folkies, there are dozens of us who have bought places here and although it is factionalised (is there such a word) we all play together at some point during the course of time.
At Christmas and New Year many people come to Whitby for a holiday and several folkies are regular visitors not only at this time but throughout the year.
Whitby is a small former fishing town on the east coast look it up on the web

"Whitby is a small former fishing town on the east coast.... "

I think you'll find the fishing industry is still the largest employer in the town...

O NO the flippin treasure hunt with Nigel Malcolm and JB, gawd 'elp us! and the tenacity and ambition to win of some of these characters is to be seen to be believed ~

Did the treasure hunt with Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner one year, we ajourned for fish and chips and also went in at least 2 pubs not on the "trail" I was supposed to have the local knowledge!

I'll be at work on Tuesday and new year's eve until 6pm ish but Stu should have enough oxygen cylinders to get down to The Station ( if I've remembered to order them properly :) ) The day's I'm not at work I try to get a nap in the afternoon so that if any thing crops up during the nights i'm compus mentis enough to cope, so if I don't see you all have a lovely time :)

On my part lots of ZZZZZZZZZ unless interupted by deliveries of oxygen and the bits of the prescription that were missing before Xmas. :) Is anyone staying in holiday cottages on the 'Railway' ( Elgin St, Grove St, Scoresby Ter., Gray St,) and thereabouts?

Fisherlads, sadly the fishing industry in Whitby as elsewhere (as I suspect you know) has undergone a massive decline. With 9 (?) trawlers, approx 25 charter boats, about 5 people on the fish key and less than 100 in the processing plants I would estimate the fishing industry employs less than 250 people in the town. The NHS employs more and the biggest industry in the town has to be tourism.
A sad reflection on the state of our once proud fishing industry but true none the less

Thankyou to everyone who said hello to Stu over the New Year, I wasn't able to make it down but it was lovely to hear him say how much he had enjoyed people coming up and chatting to him. Just being able to get to the pub for a couple of hours makes him feel so much better. Cheers Ann

Just want to say how much we enjoyed our first New Year in Whitby, and to thank all those who organised the various events.

The treasure hunt was great fun and took us into some pubs we'd never entered before (and may not again in one case in particular...!).

Lovely to see old friends again and have a good sing- a good start to the year.

Thanks again all those who made it such fun!

Noreen and Stewart

Hi Noreen

As you are probably aware Wombat and I set the treasure hunt, I'm glad you enjoyed it but am concerned that you had a problem with one pub. Could you please pm me with details, I don't want to start slagging any establishment off on the Mudcat but would like to know the reasoning behind your discomfort so I can judge whether or not to use the pub again next year

Thanks

Nick

We had a great time too and really nice to meet new and old friends and put faces to Mudcat names! We kept up our historic tradition of not winning anything (much to Eddy and Stuart's disgruntlement as I was on their team in the quiz)

Thanks to Jude and Raggytash and everyone else who made it such a memorable return - we'll be back next year!

Meanwhile hope to see some of you at Queensbury Folk Day on March 7th! We are just checking out that the outdoor camping will be available for you hardier types though we have decided that we can't provide indoor camping for this first year. Still it is only an hour or so drive from most places in the Yorks/Lancs/Durham area so do-able in a day!
