Subject: Players of the English Concertina?
From: GUEST,Ptarmigan
Date: 01 Dec 08 - 01:38 PM

I carried out a wee survey on a couple of forums recently, to try & get an idea of just how many players of the English Concertina there are in Scotland & Ireland, today.

The results, so far are Scotland: 43 & Ireland: 8

Here they are, in no particular order!

SCOTLAND:

Hamish Bayne, Jack Bethel, Bob Blair, Stewart Brown, Pamela Carr, Norman Chalmers, Selby Cochrane, Simon Cooper, David Corner, Oscar St Cyr, John Eaglesham, Stuart Eydeman, Archie Fisher, John Gahagan, Jean Graham, George Haig, Simon Harbord, Pete Heywood, Gordon Hotchkiss, Astryd Jamieson, Nigel Jelks, Joseph Kent, John Leavy, Iain MacDonald, Tom Martin, John McCourtney, Tom McDermott, Marta McGlynn, Geordie McIntyre, Brian McNeill, Mike Penny, Dave Richardson, Derek Richardson, Helen Ross, Wendy Stewart, Steve Sutcliffe, Bob Thomas, Simon Thoumire, Erland Voy, Ann Ward, Tom Ward, Frances Wilkins & Alan Wright.

& not to be forgotten {4}:

Peter Hall, Iain MacKintosh, Mike Petrie & Roy Williamson.

IRELAND:

Joanne { Jefferies }, Dick Miles, Rick Epping, Madeline O Dowd, Liam Clancy, Stephen Chambers, Mick Kinsella & Dick Glasgow.

Do you know of any others?

Oh & before any pedant here moans about this not being scientific, of course it's not, I'm just trying to get an indication of numbers, that's all.
Before carrying out the Scottish one I was told by an expert there that there were only a handful of players in Scotland, but in fact we now know that there are at least 43 ...... unless of course he has big hands!

... perhaps he's a Klingon?

Cheers
Dick

"What about England???"

Ralphie, as I'm sure you will know, the English Concertina was invented by an Englishman so, surprise, surprise, England is actually full of English Concertina players, so there is little need to ask that question.

However, Scotland & Ireland are very much unknown quantities.

Thanks Captain Birdseye.
As the family is from Ireland & actually lives here, I'll put Tony on the Irish list.

Cheers
Dick

IRELAND:

Tony Canniffe, Joanne { Jefferies }, Dick Miles, Rick Epping, Madeline O Dowd, Liam Clancy, Stephen Chambers, Mick Kinsella & Dick Glasgow.

Thanks for that, Captain.

It looks like some folks here, just read the thread's title, without actually bothering to read the initial post to find out what it's all about, in the first place.

JHW wrote:

"is the premise that we seek non-English players of the English Concertina?"

Absolutely not JW.
If you read the existing lists, you will see quite a few English musicians names in there.
It doesn't matter to me where a musician just happened to be born.
I'm interested where they are living now & playing their English Concertinas.
They could be Chinese, Australian or Klingon, it really doesn't matter to me, just so long as they do play the English Concertina & are resident in Scotland or Ireland.

Clear now? :-)

Cheers
Dick

John Thornton (Hampshire) formerly of Ramskyte plays concertina. Well I don't know how much he plays now that Ramskyte is no more. Just the Christmas charity stuff I suspect. He has been doing the jazz thing with beautiful specially made bass guitar, lately.

Jack, Diane & Tam.

Do Joan Clifford, John Kirkpatrick &/or John Thornton actually LIVE in either SCOTLAND or IRELAND?

If yes, which?

If not, then I'm sorry but they have absolutely NOTHING to do with this thread!

N. B. If in doubt, always read the original post, before posting your reply to a thread. :-)

What I was pointing out was that John Kirkpatrick (who lives almost in Wales) doesn't even play an English but an Anglo.
Though what continues to puzzle me is why on earth do you discriminate against English players of an English instrument?
Is this a new brand of inverted racism?
If so, why?

Subject: RE: Players of the English Concertina?
From: GUEST

What! ????

There is absolutely no hint of any racism in this thread Diane. If I carried out a survey of Violin players in England, would you say I was automatically discriminating against Italians, because the Violin was invented in Italy, but I was only asking for names of players living in England?

I'm sorry but I don't see any logic in your question, at all!

In future, might I suggest that you please READ the original post CAREFULLY, before going off half-cock!

In that, you will see that there are in fact quite a few English people on the Scottish list.

If you considered this thread to be racist & discriminating against the English, that would be very serious indeed, so why oh why didn't you take the time & make the effort to read the original post, ....... or my second post half way down, where I wrote:

"It doesn't matter to me where a musician just happened to be born.
I'm interested in where they are living now & playing their English Concertinas.
They could be Chinese, Australian or Klingon, it really doesn't matter to me, just so long as they do play the English Concertina & are resident in Scotland or Ireland."

I had to explain myself there too because someone else hadn't bothered to read the original post, either!

Is this a common problem on this site, I wonder, people reading the thread title, but not the actual thread post?

Surely that'd be like skimming through a newspaper & just reading the headlines, but claiming to have read the whole paper, afterwards!

Anyway, I hope this is the last time I have to explain to people what this thread is all about.
I must say, I thought I made it pretty clear in my first post.

Perhaps I should copy my original post & post it after this one, just in case!

Cheers
Dick

English Concertina in England.

We English are getting fed up with the Welsh/Irish/Scottish getting everything for free whilst us English pay the cost.

English is English.

Stop desciminating.

Its time us English stood up for our rights.

Send Gordon Brown back to Scotland.

OK

Yes, Joan Clifford lives in Scotland (the Borders).

Spelling: Stuart Eydmann.

Ptarmigan asked something similar on the Footstompin forum, where maybe his intent was more easily grasped. The point is that there is a widely held belief that the English isn't a particularly good instrument for Scottish music - without the phrasing enforced by a bisonoric system, it can be hard to make it idiomatically expressive. And this is something I've noticed in some players. An anglo seems to give you an easier ride in the earlier stages (where that might mean your first 20 years of playing, with some people; there are some well-known performers who sound like robots to me).

So it was a reasonable question to ask who in Scotland used it.

Ptarmigan, PLEASE register. It's no harder than on Footstompin and it means you can use the personal message system.

Villan:

"Incidentally the thread says
Players of the English Concertina

So are you saying it is common practice here for people to respond to only the title of a thread, without even bothering to read what the thread is actually all about, in the first post?

Villan:

"It does say that now, which is a bit late. In future make your title clear.
England forever. :-)
It used to be Britain forever, but if the other parts of Britain want to go their own way, so be it.
And no, we don't want Celtic and Rangers in the Premiership LOL:-)"

Ah, so you have read the title again, but from your last post, it is clear that you still haven't bothered to read my first post!
For the record, I did not add the [ Ireland Scotland ] to the title.
I don't mind it being added, but I would prefer to treat the readers here as adults.

From what you & one or two others are saying here, it sounds like you would probably be annoyed if I asked a question here about Sitar players in England, but didn't include players living in India, just because that's where the instrument was invented.

Can you not hear how daft you sound?

We all know that india is full of Sitar players, we all know that England is full of English Concertina players ..... so why ask? Duh!

Get over it .... PLEASE!

By the way, I personally don't like the jingoistic tone of your last reply.
I really don't think there is a place for this sort of talk, on a good forum.

For the record, I personally do not like any form of Nationalism, there being a very thin line between it & racism, fascism & the cuddly old National Front!

Here's a crazy idea, let's just stick to MUSIC .... on this music forum, eh!

Cheers
Dick

Jack,

Thanks for the back up info. I'll add Joan's name to the list, with pleasure .. Ta.

"Spelling: Stuart Eydmann."

... Ooops! I've only known Stuart personally for 35 years, spelling clearly isn't my strong point. :-(

As for your other back up info on the English/Anglo.
I reckon it comes down, once again, to the fact that there really are NO bad instruments out there, just bad players, or perhaps we should say, just players who haven't yet found the instrument that suits them best, for their chosen music.

"So it was a reasonable question to ask who in Scotland used it."

Ah good, well at least one person understood the question! :-)

"Ptarmigan, PLEASE register. It's no harder than on Footstompin and it means you can use the personal message system."

Sorry Jack, just lazy I guess.
Still, one good turn deserves another, so yes, I have now tracked down my old password.

Cheers
Dick

"The point is that there is a widely held belief that the English isn't a particularly good instrument for Scottish music -"

Yeah, that's an odd one in view of the love of piano and chromatic button accordeon. It's often used to object to the EC's use in Irish music as well - while complaining that a DG melodeon is too rhythmic and that only a BC can provide the smoothness and correct ornamentation (as if fiddle ornamentation was correct for accordeon).

The point is that there is a widely held belief that the English isn't a particularly good instrument for Scottish music - without the phrasing enforced by a bisonoric system, it can be hard to make it idiomatically expressive.

But where the player lives then is surely irrelevant- it's the style of music they are trying to play that matters. Maybe a list of "players of Irish and Sottish Music on the english Concertina" is what the OP really wants?

But as for the phrasing, if bison style is a shiny cannon for Irish music, why the Sligo flute?

Diane:
"where the player lives then is surely irrelevant"
"Precisely my point."

So Diane, it is clear that you have still not read my original post, or you wouldn't be saying that! :-(

Manitas:
Re: Accordions in Irish Music, give me a C#/D box every time. I find most B/C playing a bit too rolly polly for my ears. Give me an Accordion with a bit of bite ... Melodeon style!

""The point is that there is a widely held belief that the English isn't a particularly good instrument for Scottish music -" Yeah Manitas, that's an odd one indeed. Personally speaking, I'd say it's ideal for Scottish Music. You just have to listen to someone like Norman Chalmers with the Bairns to hear how beautifully & ever so naturally it blends into a Scottish ensemble.

Paul:
"But where the player lives then is surely irrelevant"

Not at all Paul, it depends entirely on the question asked & in my original post, you will see that I make no mention of style, or what music any of the players actually play.
That's another question entirely ...... for another list.
Let's just stick to one list at a time eh, please! :-)

Cheers
Dick

Mary, this particular thread is about musicians who live in Scotland or Ireland & who play the English Concertina.

I do think it is helpful if these threads stick to one topic at a time though, so if you really are interested in Concertina players in Wales, then by all means, please start your own thread on that subject, thankyou!

Also, I'm not sure why you bring celtic into it, after all, let's face it, you don't have to be celtic to play a Concertina!

Oh & personally, I've never met anyone who DIDN'T know that the Welsh were celtic.

We must move in different circles.

Cheers
Dick

Many thanks to Wes Williams over on C.net, for giving me another name for our list.

Namely the late 'Alf Edwards' ~ Photo of Alf Edwards

"Edwards, who died in 1985, played concertina in the 1956 movie version of "Moby Dick".

There's lots more info on Alf here: Alf Edwards

N.B. I have just been reliably informed that Alf Edwards WASN'T a Scotsman, after all! :-(

C.net thread

Ah well, sounds like he was a fascinating character, one of those one of a kind individuals, you don't meet every day. The sort that folk say there are far fewer of around, today.

The bottom line is, I don't really mind how long my list is ...... as long as it is ACCURATE, so many thanks to Stephen Chambers for the info!

Hi,
considering taking up the concertina, but unsure as to which to go with...Anglo or English? Could someone articulate which to go with and why?

Thanks

John

it depends what you want to do,in my opinion the English is a better dual [song and tune instrument].
there are more people that use the Anglo for morris and Irish music, than there are users of the English.
you should really try both, and find what seems more natural.

I was lucky enough to bump into Jack Beck this week, here in the Glens of Antrim.

I first met Jack back in 1973, but I hadn't seen him since 1983, so we had a wee bit of catching up to do.

Anyway, he was telling me that he acquired an old Wheatstone from a musician in Fife, some years ago, but he finally got round to having it fully restored fairly recently, so now he's working away on it & learning how to play it, so that he can accompany the odd song or two.

So one more Scottish exiled English Concertina player for our list! :-)

Cheers
Dick

The additions to the list seem to have forgotten players (of English keyboard concers) in Ireland. I suspect many would regard Geoff Wooff as a maker and player of uillean pipes but he plays (or played) a fine version of "The Spey in spate" on English when I knew him. I think he still lives in Ireland but I have heard rumours of a base in France.

I used to meet Geoff Wooff at the Old Dungeon Ghyll in Langdale in the '70s. He moved to Australia for a while but now appears to be based in Miltown Malbay, Co Clare. From this article it would appear that he might have little time for leisure playing!

From the article on Geoff Wooff that Ross linked to:
At 16, he began a formal engineering apprenticeship. By his mid-20s, he had worked as a machinist and draftsman, adding concertina and tin whistle to his repertoire on the London folk club scene in the 1970s.

By the time Wooff's own career took off, after moving to Australia in 1976, the craft was all but dying.

"I had wanted a set of pipes for several years and my then wife, Joan, being a very typical Australian, said, 'You're supposed to be an engineer, why don't you make your own?' " Wooff said. "But you can't start from scratch. You need something to model your work on. It's a very tricky piece of equipment."

Fate was on his side. Just as he bought a lathe and a supply of wood, a second-hand dealer turned up in Perth with a box of uilleann pipe bits. It looked like a mess, but piecing them together, Wooff found himself assembling a flat set made by Harrington of Cork in 1852.

An interesting article, and one which glosses over his concertina playing and some of his pipe background.

As a concertina player in Melbourne in 1976 I met Geoff around that time, when he was financing his presence in Oz by selling a swag of concertinas he'd brought from England with him and restoring others brought to him by players; there weren't too many restorers (or even players) in Melbourne at the time. Geoff also played Northumbrian pipes at that time.

The story he told was that he'd got hooked on their sound and ordered a set from a fellow whose name I can now not recall but whom I recognised then as almost the doyen of Northumbrian pipemakers. In the time after he'd ordered them and before they were delivered, Geoff sat at his draughting table and, using a fingering chart and a pencil, taught himself the fingering of a series of tunes. Quite impressive, I thought. He also said he'd arrived in Melbourne with an ambition to make himself a set of Northumbrian pipes out of ivory; he'd already collected most of the pieces required.

Around the time he moved to Pakenham Upper (forget the jokes, it was then a rural township but is now one of Melbourne's outer suburbs) he bought a lathe and discoverd his first set of uillean pipes in great need of repair; he made the central blok that receives all the connections out of a piece of redgum that had been used as a firehob for several years and was well seasoned. At around that time ivory came under the aegis of IUCN and Geoff started concentrating on coming to terms with uillean pipe playing.

He moved to Dianella (in Perth) for a while and discovered a decrepit set of pipes in the UWA Museum and, bargained for access to them in return for restoring them. While doing so he took his calipers to both his restored set and the museum's set and measured everything measurable, trying to determine what the makers were trying to achieve. Not long after he returned to Victoria (to near Warrnambool and Port Fairy) and concentrated on pipemaking.

It wasn't long before he'd exhausted the capacity of the Australian market for uillean pipes and was complaining about the lack of prospects. I pointed out to him that there was an even larger demand for the simple system flutes favoured by players of Irish music but nobody was making them and he already had all he needed to make them. To overcome his reluctance I offered to "patronise him" in the honourable sense of the word; I became the proud owner of Geoff Wooff Flute #4.

Not long after this he left for Ireland and lost touch. But all that time, even though he concentrated on pipes, he retained an excellent mastery of the English concertina.

Cheers, Rowan

Thanks to one Peter Duggan, I have just learned that one Paul Connolly plays the English Concertina, up in Lochaber.
Cheers,
Dick

I regret to inform the assembled company that we'd better remove Danny Dove ~ Gaerlockhead. He's still English: He's still in Gaerlockhead: He's still playing music - but I've just bought his tenor/treble and repatriated it! [He bought a guitar with the money].

Thanks Tom .... Ah well, one step forward & one step back!

You see, thanks to Michael Marino, I now know that his wife actually plays the English Concertina! So we're still at .... 81. ;-)

Cheers,

Hi Dick - I remembered the other day that when I came to Aberdeen, Tom Spiers and Arthur Watson [ later of "The Gaugers" ] used to play in a group with an English concertina player named John Vittie. I did used to have a recording of the band - one of several incarnations of a group called "The Ghille Mhor", but it's disappeared. I have a feeling also that Bill Leiper - mainly known as a whistle player and singer/guitarist, and also of "The Ghille Mhor" might have played one at that period, but that could be time and my memory playing tricks. I'll ask him next time I see him.
"Effsee" might be able to confirm this.
