The lyrics to this beautiful medieval Christmas song are in the DT, and they pretty much match Dan Fogelberg's haunting version of the song (though he leaves out a few verses and adds a couple, compared to the DT version), but I much prefer the melody he uses.

I'm wondering if someone can direct me to a linkable audio file of his recording or his tune or maybe post a MIDI of it.   If not, I'll see if I can figure out how to make a MIDI of it using Garage Band and post it here.   It's really beautiful!

Meanwhile, here are the lyrics Dan sang on his Christmas album.

THIS ENDRIS NIGHT
(Medieval Christmas carol, as sung by Dan Fogelberg)

This endris night I saw a sight,
A star as bright as day,
And, ev'r among, a maiden sung,
"Lullay, bye bye, lullay."

This lovely lady sat and sang,
And to her child did say,
"My son, my brother, father dear,
Why liest thou thus in hay?"

The child then spoke in his talking,
And to his mother said,
"Yea, I am known as heaven's king
Though I in crib be laid.

"Methinks it right that king or knight
Should lie in good array,
And then among, it were no wrong
To sing 'Bye bye, lullay.'"

"Mary, mother, I am a child,
Though I be laid in straw,
For lords and dukes shall worship me,
And so shall king-es all."

"Now tell, sweet son, I leave you, pray
Thou art my love and dear.
How should I keep thee to thy bed
And make thee glad of cheer?"

My mother dear, thou hold me warm
And keep me night and day,
And if I weep and may no sleep,
Thou sing "Bye Bye lullay.
Thou sing "Bye Bye lullay."

Is it this tune? (See foot of the page for score, MIDI file, etc)

There's a verse on the Dan Fogelberg Web site. Assuming there's only the one tune, that should be what you need.

Thanks, giles.
Yes, that's the basic tune that Dan sings.

But as you can hear from the verse Claire posted from Dan's album "The First Christmas Morning," there's a little more nuance and variation to the tune.   The second two lines of the verse do not have exactly the same tune as the first two.

Thanks so much for that link, Bear.   Dan's voice is so hauntingly beautiful on that song it makes me even sadder that he died so prematurely this past year.    But I'm so glad I have his Christmas album.

I've been exploring Christmas music at the Cyberhymnal, and i came across a tune called 'This endris night.'

I don't know if this is a new one to you or not. Go to the Cyberhymnal and look for a song called 'Behold the Great Creator Makes.' That song uses an old tune which they Cyberhymnal people say is 'This endris night.' If you lik it, you can download their MIDI.

I'll try a link.

Yes, Leeneia, that's essentially the same tune that Dan used. But you can hear the same tune, with interesting modulations beyond the MIDI form, at the link that Claire posted.

If you check out "This Endris Night" at YouTube you can also hear several choirs and ensembles singing the song with this tune, plus a couple instrumentals.

I bought Dan's christmas album today (only nine years late). I'm overwhelmed by it. I'm not particularly emotional but this wonderful cd made me weep! Even that hoary old chestnut We Three Kings is transformed into a thing of beauty. I can't recommend this album highly enough!

I posted an ABC of This Endris Night back in 1999:
