I suffered a bad fire last night, and have had my best concertina badly damaged.
I am feeling really bad.
I click on to my personal page, and theres a mail from a mod asking me not to send anonymous guest messages.
I have spent the whole day trying to clear up fire debris,I have not had time to post messages, let alone childish stuff, pretending to be anyone else.
I havent logged off[let alonr be an anonymous guest] from this site for months, give me a break, please. .Dick Miles

I'm sorry to hear that Dick (Miles) I know just how attached you can get to any instrument. As I have tried to point out many times in the many threads about lending out musical instruments. I have even sung along with my mate Mick Haywood whilst guarding the bar in the Plough in Whitby when they had a small Fire. The Night Old Dun Cow caught Fire.

I can however recommend Mike Acott Concertinas to you he is at 33 Kelvin Road Ipswich Suffolk IP15EH http://www.mike-acott-concertinas.co.uk/

Tel 01473 743080 mob 07818055100

You may know him he is a Member of the superb Shaty Group Capstan Full Strength.

O shut up you wimp he can always claim the scorches were caused by playing too fast! (you need to read the Thread Multiple personalities to under stand the Humore of that statement)thread.cfm?threadid=116681&messages=10#2507049

Hi Dick. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
Do you remember your dream about the concertina that you posted on the Folk Dreams thread? Because I do. It had a good ending.
I hope all goes well...

Dick surely this is covered by your contents insurance. Most insurances up to a certain value do not need the items to be named. If you get a quotation for it's repair then there should be no problems. It is most likely that the heat will effect the temper (hardness) of the reeds. This may have been protected by the box it was in however.
At least you are OK which is the main thing.

We develope such a relationship with these bits of wood and metal, that something like this is a trauma hard to describe. I hope the instruments are salvageable, and repairable. But rest assured, old son, that there is another out there in need of your loving ministrations.

..... and you are safe. Thanks be.

How horrid for you. I've just fallen in love with my first concertina - my "main squeeze" and the idea of a house fire is one of my scariest nightmares - I can understand how awful this can be. Best wishes for recovering/clean up/ getting your life back to normal & prayers for an insurance company that takes good care of you and your concertina.

So sorry to hear your news, Dick. I know how it feels - our family piano was once smashed up by careless removal men and it was heartbreaking. It was eventually restored to something like its former glory, on the insurance, so I hope your concertina can be mended too.

Just too much in one go.   Poor Mr. Miles

What a terrible thing to have happen. Hope a good foster instrument can be found while (trying to maintain positive outlook) your own is being repaired.

Also hope the issue with mistaken identity by moderator is resolved happily too.

Blessings

Tam

Best wishes and I hope that repairs can be effected.
Someone somewhere will have the technoloy, but will your insurance cover it?
I know what I felt like when my G/D anglo was stolen, however, I was lucky and got it back within 7 months, though I had to go to court to prove it was mine.
Should loss of an instrument be up there on that famous list of stressful life events, along with berievement, divorce etc.

Oh dear,

Dick, Bill and I send our love.Having a house fire is a dreadful thing, so much mess and the clearing up is never ending.
I do hope the damage to the house was not too bad,but the loss of the concertina and damage to the banjo must have shaken you up so much. However, as a long time friend, I have to say "thank goodness you are safe!!!!!!" Wish we were not so far away and could help with the clearing up.

I am speaking to Barry this evening and I know he will send his best wishes too, he enjoyed playing the violin with you last year so much.

take care, love and hugs
Wendy

It's obvious how traumatic this loss must have been, because Dick doesn't offer a single word about the condition of his home or of any other possessions (besides that banjo).

I've never experienced such a loss, but for a while in late 2005 I was in suspense, not knowing whether my irepaceable one-and-only guitar was OK after I had left it home when evacuating for Hurricane Katrina.

I was fairly confident that the floodwaters would not have risen as high as the top of a bed on the second floor ~ and in the end, the guitar had indeed survived. But for the long month-and-a-half during which we were unable to return home to survey the damage, there was still an element of doubt and I was worried sick.

Dick, you have my sincerest sysmpathy.

Our sympathies, Dick, but glad to know that you're OK at least. Hope things aren't as bad as they seem at first.

It isn't the first time mistakes have been made as to identity, and sometimes it's easy to jump to conclusions - so our sympathies, even empathy, on that too.

Dick - is the concertina on your web page the one that was damaged? It's always heartwrenching when a favourite instrument suffers damage. We get so close to them through years of practice and performing. I hope it - and therefore you - gets better soon.

so sorry to hear about the fire.

I was pretty shocked when Brian peters told me how much a decent concertina costs. Will you have to replace the instrument?

How many of us would need to buy an album to help you on the way to getting a new one?

all best wishes

At least it was the concertina, and not you, Dick. So it isn't all bad, is it?!

On the up side, the replacement could even turn out to be better than the damaged one (assuming it isn't economic to repair). Bloody inconvenient, though - which is probably the understatement of the year!

Next time I see you I hope the news is good!

Yes,it was built about 1909,and had been put to its best by Steve Dickinson, and played like a dream .
