Hi all

Not sure if mudcat allows this kind of post - if I've broken the rules please zap it!

I've recently acquired a rather nice custom-built Rob Armstrong guitar, which means that I'm having to say farewell to my trusty Takamine EG-332. It's currently on ebay for the next 5 days. If there's anyone out there who'd like to come and have a look, pm me and we'll sort out a time (I'm based in Coventry, UK). The ebay listing is here.

I'm also selling my Wharfedale SVP-15 speakers with a couple of stands. The spec is on the blurb for ebay, but again, please do pm me with any questions! Link is here.

This is the second such post today, linking to ebay.

Can I suggest that they are probationally permitted for members only, that they must not be refreshed, and that say 5% of the selling price be donated to the Cat, or if they don't want it, to some other approved organisation developing folk music?

I don't think we should advertise goods for sale, although I'm guilty of publicising folk club events/guests.

Mudcat runs its own auctions too. I see nothing wrong with advertising equipment for sale, indeed it might merit an "equip" prefix. I also see nothing wrong with advertising club and other gigs, personal gigs Mudcatters' new CDs coming out etc etc.

The ability to trade is a vital part of any community, be it trading information or goods/services. I see Mudcat as a community, therefore I think advertising should be accepted. If it was an academic-interest site only, then I might have had a different view.

I agree with George, another prefix would be a good idea. As long as the items are of specifically connected to music then I would be pleased to see what's around for sale. I wonder if I could get away with that old washboard in the shed. skiffle washboard

I'm not in the market currently, but I don't object to "instrument for sale" postings, not at all.

I'm pretty sure we get them once in a while without sparking any controversy, or any comment at all. Wasn't there a very recent thread concerning sale of a rare Gordon Lightfoot signature D-18?

I thought this was a forum for members to tell eachother things etc. If a member has something for sale I think it's good to ask members first if they would like to buy said item.

"In favour of sales", but I would support the idea of people having to be full members, not Guests. I think buying something from within the community is a bit extra 'insurance' on a deal. It wouldn't occur to me for a minute that du'ukis, or most other members, would be anything less than genuine with us.

In in favor of sales too esp if it's instrument or music related. But I can see where we might want to restrict it to members so we're not spammed. And perhaps we might consider a quantity limit. Maybe one sales listing per month - per member?

Could lead to lots of traffic which may cause Mudcat some tech problems, and don't really want this to finish up as a folk-based Ebay.

Also might there not be legal implications?

If sales are ok do they have to be 'folk' related?

Possibly the best way to moderate this is through a specific PermaThread, rather than additional postings. Guest postings would not be allowed, and the opening post of the thread would warn people they would be deleted (oo-er!) if they were not members.

People should change the subject of their post to reflect what they have for sale, which would facilitate searches and would also show up via the 'Messages since last visit' feature only available to members.

If the person selling then does so via their own email, it shouldn't affect Mudcat traffic appreciably. Posters would include their email address with _at_ substituted for @ to deter spam harvesters, which would go a long way to ensure only interested parties used the facility.

In other words, a very minimal change to the Mudcat infrastructure...

Erm, I HAVE put it on ebay. I mentioned at the start of this thread that if I was doing anything that contravened the house rules, I was quite happy to have my wrist slapped and for the thread to be removed. No-one's done that, so I guess the powers that be are happy with it.

If you've got a problem with the thread, posting to it is kinda counter-productive since it just bounces it straight back to the top of the list! Since the guitar didn't sell I've relisted it with a lower starting price.

BTW, guest Zig, I note that your love of folk music and discussion hasn't prompted you to actually join the forum.

I'd have thought the simplest solution would be to not allow 'For Sale' postings on Mudcat but do allow someone telling everyone that they have put something musical e.g. Takamine EG-123 Guitar, on e-bay. That way Mudcatters are alerted that something, in which they may be interested, is available but all the details and process of buying is handled by e-bay (or Loot or whatever).
btw I think the above is a different category to advertising folk clubs and gigs.

I assume it's the one you played at Pimperne, Dorset in August, Chris? If so, I can confirm that it's a petty fearsome instrument, rich tone, plenty of 'oomph.' (I had the Gibson......)

Yep, it's the same guitar. And if a catter wins it, yep I can throw in a hard case as well. It used to belong to John Thompson of Cloudstreet, so I imagine some of you will have heard it being played by him.

It's not in same league as your Gibson though, Terry!

Do you have a problem with the advert, duellingboukoukis, Takamine guitars, Mudcat bandwidth, cruel misfortune, life in general or all of the above? I'm at a loss to understand why such animus about such a simple post.
On-topic content; I've played this guitar, it's a belter, and somebody is going to get a bargain.
