Our own Dan Milner AKA Liam's Brother here on Mudcat sent me a link to a treasure that all fans of Irish music will love. Here is his comment:

I'm probably the last person on the planet to come across this and you have probably viewed it 10 times already but, if not, here's a link to a ballad opera filmed circa 1965 and starring the late Ronnie Drew and rest of The Dubliners. Johnny Moynihan is the singer of the thread-song, "The Night Before Larry Was Stretched," but you may not recognize him immediately because he's wearing a tie!

All the best,

Mick

It was shown a few months back on "Come West Along the Road", RTE's (Irish national TV) excellent archival program on traditional music. Fascinating, alright.

Regards

Erk! There's another 37 minutes of my life gone...

Thanks very much for posting that link, Mick. A period piece and a real treasure.

Cheers, mate!

There was a google video link to O'Donoghue's Opera in an earlier Mudcat thread (Ted McKenna) in February 2008. That link now only seems to produce audio.

So glad to be able to see this again.

Ross

Really enjoyed it. How nice that it's been preserved.
