After some months of experimentation with concertinas and accordions of various sorts - kindly lent by friends or cheaply bought - I'm seriously interested in learning the cajun accordion.

Quality instruments are not cheap. Some musical instrument dealers have a hire & try system, whereby you can hire an instrument for, say, 3 months; if you decide to buy, the hire charge comes off the price of the instrument; if you say "no", then the deal's cancelled and you've just paid the hire charge.

Does anyone know of suppliers with such a scheme for accordions/melodeons in the UK? (Not much luck so far with Googling for this information).

It was seeing Tony Weatherall in Greg's band last week that really helped me make my mind up. Outstanding playing - I shall never be as good as that in a million years, but it's inspirational stuff.
