Ok, all you folks who know more than I do about diets. We diabetics have to watch the carbs, but no one tells me how much carbs is too much? Any opinions

Depends on your portion control and the amount you have each day.

My 'Diabetic's cook book' suggests no more than two small portions a day, so a small to medium baked potato at lunch and pasta with dinner (as opposed to pasta FOR dinner) should be about right.

It varies greatly from person to person though, it may take a while before you discover what is right for you.

That's what the dietician is for..

Mine suggests 3 meals a day of 45-60 grams of carbs and 2 snacks of about 15g. To figure out the amount of carbs from a label you take the total carb number and subtract the dietary fiber number. For example, my popcorn has a Total Carb amount of 23g with 9g of dietary fiber so the total carbs for a serving of this popcorn is 14g which is right on target for a snack for me.

Seriously, a dietitian should give you some counsel. Some dietitian are very much worth seeing, too (they might be lousy dietitians but they are well worth seeing).

Think in terms of a sandwich made with regular sized slices of bread.

Don't get them in the wrong way or you'll have to type them out again.

Doing blueprint info sheets was fun, especially if you got the blue carbon where the yellow should be and vice versa.

It is all relative to your exercise/activity level. You need carbs to live. Every meal and snack should include a fruit, a carb, and a protein. The rest is variation.

I can have maybe 1/2 a small potato at a time or I go up over 300.

You learn to cut out anything not nutrient-dense real fast.

Thanks to those who had a logical answer.

My old bread had 24 grams of carbs. I just bought a loaf of "Low carb" bread, and it has 8 grams per slice.If I deduct the fiber, it is 6 GPS.

Kendall, listen to Becca72, she's pretty much right on the money
The fiber count doesn't work unless it's over 5g's & then you can only deduct half(instead of where Becca says 14 carbs she should have 18 1/2), under that is now not counted as useful so you can't subtract the half of it unless it's over 5g's of fiber. The snack is now 17g's though 20 I was told isn't bad. Those fruit filled "nutri-grain" bars are perfect snacks.

"If the light bread has more than 5 g's of fiber you can deduct half"
so Beccca's example of popcorn above means of the 9grams of fiber you can only subtract 4 1/2grms from the carbs.

If you use an oil in your salad, it'll cause the carbs from starch or meat to break down over the course of 3 hrs instead of over the course of 15 minutes to a half hr if you had no oil intake. That's part of the reason for a "blanced" meal.

That's why you don't eat the small potato alone, a starch turns to sugar right away but not if you balance it. Balance it right & it takes up to 3 hrs to turn, that way it spreads the break up over a much longer period of time which stops you from spiking.

Kendall, make an appointment for Diabetic training classes, it's about 2-3 hrs a day over 4 days then see a dietician, it's covered by all health care policies. It is alot at 1st but it does start to make sense.
It took me a round of classes a couple junts to a nuti & dietician & I still have to get more educated but it is getting a little more understandable as I go along. I'm only 6 months in front of you.

Forget everything & anything anyone says about calories, you don't even think calories you go beyond that. 3 regulars a day & 2 snakes (haha)inbetween. Count carbs & keep the meals balanced.

Watch you salt intake too, stick to low sodium when possible but that's not near as important as the other stuff. It is if you feet or legs start to swell.

The other thing of equal importance to diet is exercise, diet alone won't work! Some health policies cover the costs of gyms.

Kendall, you can get lots of exercise rowing around your lobster traps. The lobsters you catch you can send to your friends on MC. So get the boat and the old traps out and have at 'er!

By the way, a quick rule of thumb for meat and fish is a serving size about the size of the palm of your hand. Either hand will work, but the thickness of the cut isn't specified.

My doctor sent me to a diabetes education class at a local hospital, and part of the course (4 lectures) was a meeting with a dietician. That was in May, 2007. The diet she gave me was this:

45 carbs for breakfast
60 carbs for lunch
45 carbs for supper
30 carbs for an evening stack before bed

for a total of 180 carbs per day. At the time I was 5ft-4in, and 245 pounds. By sticking to that diet, I lost 50 pounds over the last 18 months, and all my blood tests have come back normal since then. My good cholesterol was up, my bad cholesterol was down, and my blood sugar was back to normal.

I must admit that I've been going over that lately, which means I've stopped losing weight for the time being. But I'm getting back to it again (even during the holidays), and I think I can knock off some more weight by the end of the year.

With the nutrition labeling info, it's not too hard to follow the numbers. Write down everything you eat religiously. I happen to love oatmeal, so I have that nearly 5 days out of 7, with a little brown sugar and a little sugar-free maple syrup & a little REAL butter.

If you have something that's not labelled, I recommend a website called Calorie King for information.

It's actually best to stay away from all carbs containing white flour...best to go for whole grains by all means necessary! Makes a big difference with blood sugar levels and how smooth or bumpy your blood sugar adventures will be.

I have an appointment on December 17th, but I'm just trying to get ahead of this thing before then.

My other problem is Triglycerides. They have been as high as 1800, and they are now just over 300.

Of course Becca knows of what she speaks.

My mileage may vary because I am not yet diabetic. I was 'pre diabetic' last year and my numbers have improved since then. But you will get different answers from everyone so go with what the professional tells you.

Here's a Wikipedia article. Seems like it's good for use as a sweetener if you have diabetes, but you shouldn't use too much. It's been available in health food stores for a while. It's relatively expensive, but you only need a teeny bit.

I hate counting calories, carbs, grams of fat, etc....well, I don't hate it, I just don't do it. Instead, a few years ago, I made a concious effort to avoid white rice, white flour, sugar, and potatoes - amazing how much food that takes in. In doing so, I a) lost almost 40 pounds, lowered my cholesterol and tryglicerides, too, and b) started feeling great. Oh, I joined a gym, too - and actually go. With these guidelines, I eat as much as I want of everything else.

I've cut out all white flour products, made severe cuts in carbs and I've lost 6 pounds in about two weeks. I sleep better and I have more energy.

Well, why didn't ya say so... I'm partial to Holleys 'cause I have a lot or experience with 'um but when it come down to it they all are purdy much the same... Float bowl, air and fuel jets and a pump... Big deal...

Lots of 'um in pizza... That's why folks who run matathons eat lots of pizza... Reckon they can'tr be too bad fir ya, I donno...

Fat is differenter stuff... No good for running marathons but I know that pizza has alot of fat in the cheeze... And I know not to eat no cheeze before I sing so cheeze prolly ain't too good fir ya which sucks because pizza without cheeze ai't pizza...

All I know is that if ya' eat alot of green stuff you can eat a moderate amount of most of the other stuff... But moderate means just that... I do know that... Maybe that's why I weight purdy much what I did 35 years ago... May have gained 5 pounds but lots of greens... I kinda think of greens as my ticket to have an occasional couple slices of pizza (with the cheeze)... I also believe that countin' grams of this or that ain't what dieting is all about... Everyone has a diet... It's about green first, yellow second...

Thing color and just change yer diet toward green and all will be fine... My mom was big on nutrition ans that's the way she brought me up... Green...

A site worth having a look at is www.bdec-e-learning.com. This is from Bournmouth UK where they are now using Carb Counting as a norm in diabetic control (as are several other hospitals in the UK)

It gives you a chance to learn about such things without anyone leaning over your shoulder and includes helpful pictures of carb portions.

You didn't say if you went to bed last night, Capt'n... Oatmeal ain't got nuthin' bad in it by itself... If ya put whole milk on it it might make ya' sleepy... If ya' put raisins in it, or brown sugar it might make you sleepy but oatmeal itself is nuthin' but sticky fibre food...

I think ya got bad case of Taylor Syndrome... You need to borrow a Martin an' play it fir a couple days and you'll be fine...

Stick with the oatmeal, too...

   In those 2 weeks have you checked your morning glucose levels with a finger stick? Your initial reading that you posted here was not a high blood sugar by any stretch of the imagination. I bet with the cuts you have made, it is in the *normal* zone. Hope you are feeling better because of it.

Long time ago my doctor put me on a low fat diet, with daily doses of bran (Yuk). Now he wants me to stay away from carbs. My bran cereal is loaded with carbs. WTF.
