Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: GUEST Date: 05 Dec 08 - 08:35 AM I think there's a misconstruction here. It isn't the young lady walking down the street who is singing "Do wah diddy," etc., but rather the singer of the song itself, or more precisely the persona created by the singer, of a young man admiring her as she walks; and it's not intended as a literal expression of that persona's spoken words at the time, but rather as a linguistic metaphor for the feeling that he derives from said admiration. A similar literary device is employed in the fictitious song (by Rockaday Johnny) within a song (by Bob Dylan): "Tell your ma, tell your pa, our love's a-gonna grow; ooh-wah-wah." In that case, the speaker does not intend the final phrase as part of the message he wants his beloved to convey to her parents. It is appended to express his enthusiasm for the communication, and indeed for the entire relationship. |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Cool Beans Date: 05 Dec 08 - 09:01 AM I'm partial toward "Billy's Mule," by the New Christy's Minstrels, a song so dumb that it singlehandedly ended the 1960s folk music boom, IMHO. It's so stupid that I've recored it for my next CD. Until then, you can hear the New Christy's Minstrels version: http://members.cox.net/pvsharp/tlg/tncc.html |

Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Charmion Date: 05 Dec 08 - 10:05 AM For sheer inanity, it's hard to beat "Found a peanut, found a peanut, found a peanut last night ..." sung to the tune of "Clementine". Very popular among nine-year-olds circa 1963, when I was nine years old myself. Or perhaps "Hey bus driver, speed up a little bit, speed up a little bit, speed up a little bit. Hey bus driver, speed up a little bit, I wanna get home some day" -- not to speak of a whole whack more of really traditional genuine folk songs that little kids just *love*. Big Blue Frog wasn't a folk song, but it sure had -- and still has -- all the qualities of a seriously good novelty song. "It's not as bad as it appears, he's got glasses and a PhD!" I loved it when I was 14, and I still do. As for "Don't worry, be happy", it's less a song than a genius arrangement of melodious sounds all generated by Bobby McFerrin, a seriously under-rated musician. |

Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Dec 08 - 12:39 PM There are lot of nonsense-lyric songs that I really LIKE, including the aforementioned "Do Wah Diddy" and a whole bunch of New Orleans R&B classics like Jesse Hill's "Ooh Pooh Pa Doo" and Lee Dorsey's "Sittin' here La La (Waitin' for my Ya Ya)." I think that Allen Toussaint may have produced both of these gems ~ he's definitely responsible for the entire Lee Dorsey catalog, and I think he may have done the earlier Jesse Hill record as well. And then there's Professor Longhair's immortal "Tipitina." Nothing stupid about that, regardless of the absense of any narrative coherence! Those songs aren't "stupid" ~ they're fun, and they are entirely valid artistic achievements in that they successfully evoke an atmosphere of laughter and good times, making it virtually impossible to remain straightfaced and motionless. Even those lightweight/airheaded bubblegum songs that Mick dislikes so much are tolerable to me because they aspire to that kind of "feelgood" status (even though they generally fail to reach anyone with halfway-grownup intelligence). For my money, true songwriting stupidity is most evident where the effort is the most pretentious. And the absolute stupidest song ever to achieve widespread popularity and/or airplay has already been mentioned: "MacArthur Park." |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Dec 08 - 12:54 PM I cross-posted with Bobert. I had forgotten all about the absolutely awful "Honey." He's right, it's one of the worst songs ever recorded, if not the very worst. Hard to compare versus "MacArthur Park," since the two are despicable in such different ways... "Thanks" a LOT, Bobert, for making that terrible song run though my head again! |

So maybe it ain't such a stoopid song after all, Mein Fuhrer !! |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 05 Dec 08 - 01:17 PM Chalk up another for Don Firth: Bobby Goldsboro's music was even worse than his hair - which made him appear to be a cross between a Beatle and a pixie on steroids. |

Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: frogprince Date: 05 Dec 08 - 03:04 PM I followed Cool Bean's link to "Billy's Mule, and then found this on down that page; I haven't actually heard this, but the lyric has to be a real contenduh: ARTIST: Mason Williams TITLE: The Prince's Panties Lyrics and Chords [Capo 2] There was once a prince who acted strangely in that He thought life was stupid and it was for him so He made up a world in which he liked the things we liked But he had different reasons why he liked them / D - / C - / D - / C - / He liked butter for its color He would order toast and color Waitresses, confused would utter Sir, I've never heard of toast and color He'd get angry and begin to choke them The law would come, and they'd arrest and book him So his life was a mess of trouble Still he kept it up / " / " / Bb - / A - / He had dogs, a hundred cocker spaniels and he Called them panties, 'cause they did that mostly, and he Did not care at all if they would bark and fetch sticks Run and jump, roll over, and play dead tricks No, he liked them only for their panting So he would run them ragged, but one day they got fed up And chased the prince right up against the fence And the prince was eaten by his panties ... / Bb - / A D B - / |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 05 Dec 08 - 03:59 PM To Acorn 4: Not as a contradiction, but a matter of historic interest, the original piece on which the "Jimmy Brown" song was based was performed and recorded by an esteemed French vocal group called Les Compagnons de Chansons. An all male octet, they were formed in 1946 and became known world wide as contemporaries of Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf. The song was called "Les Tres Cloches," or "The Three Bells." The harmonies in the original were beautifully done. |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Dec 08 - 04:35 PM I'll play Suzanne for you when next we meet, dick. ;-) I think it's a lovely song that got damaged mostly simply by being covered way too often by way too many earnest young folksingers. The first time one heard it, though, it was lovely. Fast forward ten years, by which time you've heard it at least 80,000 times, and mostly by people who gave it a rather callow and unconvincing rendition...and you could get quite fed up with it. As they say, "familiarity breeds contempt". |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Dec 08 - 04:39 PM As I recall, "Jimmy Brown" or "Three Bells" was recorded by The Browns, a Nashville act who were actually members of a family named Brown. A corny-enough song to my taste, but not nearly the stupidist ever. One truly awful song that I don't remember ever hearing in full myself, but with which David Letterman has gotten many laughs recently just by repeatedly playing a brief excerpt, is something recorded by Jose Feliciano: "Old Turkey Buzzard." |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Cluin Date: 05 Dec 08 - 04:53 PM Google "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by Leonard Nimoy. `nuff said. |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Genie Date: 05 Dec 08 - 04:53 PM Big Blue Frog isn't so much a novelty song (nor do I think it a stupid song) as a bit of satire aimed at racism (specifically, making fun of people who foresee all sorts of horrible results from interracial marriage). Kind of like the Smothers Brothers' "Crabs Walk Sideways." G |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Genie Date: 05 Dec 08 - 04:56 PM I think a distinction might be drawn between "silly songs" and "stupid songs." I kind of like the former. To me, "stupid songs" are ones that reveal more, well, ignorance or stupidity than fancy or whimsy." Probably the silliest song I've ever heard is "A Horse Named Bill." Which is why it's fun. Genie |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Genie Date: 05 Dec 08 - 05:03 PM Oh, and, Bubblyrat, it's "Ossenfeffer," not "Hossenpfeffer" or "Hasenpfeffer." Thinking of novelty songs (such as that one), I'd say probably the stupidest "novelty song" I've ever heard is the one Sylvia Sims recorded: "English Muffins And Irish Stew." The chorus says "You'd never think they go together but they certainly do: the combination of English muffins and Irish stew." 1) Why on earth would anyone think they WOULDN'T go together? 2) If they do, who cares? |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: JedMarum Date: 05 Dec 08 - 05:09 PM I gotta agree that Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" really was pretty f*cking dreadful, but to me the stupidest and most annoying song ever has to be Barry Manilow's, I Write the Songs. I could be prejudiced, I guess. I find everything about Barry's music annoying. |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: PoppaGator Date: 05 Dec 08 - 05:29 PM Excellent nomination, Jed. All those Manilow songs can be pretty hard to take, but the one where he credits himself as "the" writer of songs is absolutley obnoxious. Songs that "the whole world sings," no less! |
Subject: RE: Stupidest song you ever heard. From: Bill D Date: 05 Dec 08 - 05:48 PM Now, there are some pretty awful 'country' songs....as in "Bobby Broke My Heart at Walgreens, and I Cried All the Way to Sears" The stupidest, of course, are the ones which TRY to be poignant and serious, and come off as maudlin and syrupy and dumb....and sound like they were written stream-of-conciousness in 15 minutes. |
