Subject: Alternative uses for Contertinas....
From: Bobert
Date: 05 Dec 08 - 08:07 PM

I was at an auction about 20 years ago and the autioneer held up this accorian lookin' thing and said, "Who will give me $30 for it??? Twenty dollars??? Can I get a bid on this little accordian???"

"One dollar" I shouted from behind the crowd and tho the auctioneer pleaded for more no one was interested... So I got the sumabich for a dollar, took it home. learnmed a couple little rythums on it and grew very bored with it so...

...what to do with it??? I mean, it was in great shape but I had, like the other folks at the auction, no use fir it so...

...I put it in the closet where it lived for the next 10 years or so until one night I was talkin' with Ms Kitty West, a folkie from S. Carolina, and we got talkin' about them things and, geeze, next thing ya' know I discover that she is prolly the only person in the world that gives a flyin' crap for these things so I gave it to her so...

...if like I was and you are stuck with one, try to track down Kitty West... She'll take it off yer hands and not even charge you!!!

B~

We have one sitting around here. It belonged to Jenn's great uncle Arthur, who was an illegal immigrant before they ever thought of such things. He was a musician for the White Star Line who jumped ship in Boston. He'd had been scheduled to be on the Titanic for its maiden voyage but gave up his birth to a friend who needed the extra money. Otherwise, his concertina would be sitting on the floor of the North Atlantic someplace.

Alternate uses? Open it up and use it to sort mail.

If you have access to a metal working press (GM may give you a deal) a concertina will make an excellent bookmark. Or a blacksmith might let you play in his shop if you connect the exhaust to his forge. There are rumors that people play folk music on the things, but you can't believe everything you hear now, can you?

Give it to me - I might even give you some money for it! :-)

And if you think that giving it to me isn't an 'alternative use' - you haven't heard me play!

:-P

When we got a new kitten eighteen months ago we read that a relatively painless way of getting her to desist from unwanted forms of behaviour, such as jumping up on the dining room table when we were having a meal, was to blow in her face. It worked and soon we could just make a puffing noise across the room and she would stop doing unwanted things. I then had the idea of using the air button on my anglo for the same effect. Now I only have to pick up the concertina and she races out of the room and through the cat flap as quickly as her four little feline feet can manage.

I already have 2 concertinos, but what's a contertino?
Should I start looking for one? They sound useful!

A contertino is a male contertina, of course.

They make quite good percussion instruments if you run a hacksaw blade across the bellows edges. Don't last long though.
You could always use the inside to hide your valuables. No self-respecting burglar would go near it.

If it has an air key, it will be great for making 'heavy breathing' phone calls...

as bernard wrigley used to say of the bass concertina on his lap - this covers a multitude of sins.

If you have two of them, you can wave them about while shouting, "Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! Danger!"

Bobert,

I would suggest that anything that can be accomplished by utilizing the good old alternating "SUCK, BLOW, SUCK, BLOW, SUCK, BLOW" in-and-out air passage technique can also be done using a concertina!!! I think I saw it on a porn site once.

Good luck!!

Art
