From the Guardian here:

Our friend Malcolm Douglas, who has died from cancer aged 54, had many talents, but two in particular brought him to national prominence. He had a compendious knowledge and understanding of traditional folk song (mainly, but not exclusively, English folk song), and he was a renowned illustrator and comic artist. He fell into these contrasting fields by accident, but he treated them with meticulous attention to detail and a professionalism that belied his lack of formal training.

He became an illustrator after volunteering to illustrate a student union newspaper at Sheffield University, and found that people were prepared to pay him to do what had hitherto been a hobby. His illustrations featured in a wide range of comics, of which the best known was Oink; he was also the illustrator of the footballing devilkin Fred the Red, for five years delighting both young and old readers of Manchester United match programmes.

For the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) he revised the evergreen song collection The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs, originally edited by Ralph Vaughan Williams and AL Lloyd in 1959. In his new edition, published in 2003 as Classic English Folk Songs, he corrected previous errors and brought to the book a wealth of additional detail. He did the same well-researched and comprehensive review of another of the EFDSS's most successful publications, Marrow Bones (2007), a collection of folk songs from Dorset and Hampshire, originally edited by Frank Purslow. He was working on a third, The Wanton Seed, when he succumbed to illness. He was also well-known among folk-music enthusiasts for his contributions to the online forum The Mudcat Café, where he had posted almost 9,000 detailed answers to questions about the most obscure aspects of folk song and music.

Malcolm was born and brought up in south London, and after attending Trinity School of John Whitgift in Croydon, he went to Sheffield University to study French and English and decided to stay on in the city, which he regarded as his home town.

He was committed to the principle of the people's ownership of their cultural heritage and was involved in many grassroots initiatives, even expressing concern about what he saw as the over-professionalisation of the folk arts. He was co-host at the Red Deer folk club in Sheffield for a decade and was active in regional organisations such as the South Riding Folk Network (SRFN) and Yorkshire Folk Arts, maintaining websites for both organisations, editing the SRFN magazine and designing the South Yorkshire folk magazine Stirrings.

Malcolm was also a performer, playing the fiddle, mandolin and cittern with various concert and dance bands, and was a familiar figure at music sessions in and around Sheffield.

He is survived by his mother, Sylph, and his brother, Ian.

Dear Malcolm,
Everything said above goes for me, as well. Your erudition is awesome, and you've always responded intelligently and with kindness. I need to think of some new queries, just to hear from you. All the best for the holidays, and wishing you a healthy New Year.

That 'not fully diagnosed' is worrying, let's hope a) the diagnosis is found quickly, and b) it surrenders to treatment and graciously leaves the premises with all due haste.

In the meantime, I give a Yuletide greeting of "Was Hael, Was Hael!" Good Health! Good Health!

Let me try that again.

Update Monday Decembeer 15th 6.00 pm UK time.

The stent - whereby he can eat - is working its magic and he is feeling a lot better.

Short term - this means he will be going home soon, not fully diagnosed, but well enough. For fairly obvious reasons the less people in hospital at Xmas the better.

His mother went to visit yesterday.

From the locals - once again - many thanks for all your good wishes.

I've just logged into Mudcat for the first time in a few days, so have only just learned about this. I can only echo what everyone else has said. Malcolm has been a great help to me on this site and others and it is excellent news to hear he seems to be responding to treatment. Malcolm, just take things easy for a while. We will muddle through somehow and then you can have the pleasure of sorting all our mistakes out when you get back!

Actually Ralphie, the 'Cat has a long history of this kind of thing dating back to even before Malcolm arrived here. Here was the first almost ten years ago and perhaps a less deserving 'Catter....

Malcolm is the latest and I am so glad to hear he's getting better! Maybe it is all just smoke and mirrors but the good thoughts and prayers of so many humane and wonderful people sure as hell can't hurt and I tell ya' what.......it may just be that little extra that gets us over the hump. Works for me (on numerous occasions!).................

It's getting pretty obvious that Malcolms illness is reaching out across the globe.
How wonderful is that?
Would that any of the rest of us could have the same response.
Come on Malc. Get better soon.
It's not just your knowledge, It's your all encompassing friendship the is so important.
I just hope that Christmas treats you well.

Like many others here, I've never met Malcolm but stand in awed admiration at his knowledge and recall.
Whenever I am looking for some background on a song variant, I have one or two people I ask in person but towering about even them is Malcolm.

Glad to hear you're improving, just keep improving and get well soon.

Or How about this one?

"In fact they have 79 variants of Den vonde stjukmori, but only two refer to Moderen under Mulde in their notes. I wish, sometimes, that I understood Norwegian; I am assuming for the moment that this is The Wicked Stepmother, but I can't find a definition of stjukmori anywhere..."

I tooka a moment or two to look at some of the posts. I recommend anyone to do the same.

Here's my favourite from the first page!! The problem isn't important - but look at that answer.

For what it's worth (if there is any connection, it's pretty tenuous), the Montreal Family Herald and Weekly Star ran a regular feature, 'Old Favourites', from 1895 to 1968, and apparently published two folio anthologies (1898 and 1900), though under what titles I don't know. For more on the column and the songs it included, see Edith Fowke, "Old Favourites": A Selective Index in Canadian Journal for Traditional Music, 7, 1979.

Now who dare contradict that!!!

Glad to hear that Malcolm is doing well. I'm quite late putting my two-cents'-worth into this thread, but better late than never.

For VirginiaTam and anyone else who hasn't yet encountered Malcolm, I wanted to post a link to his list of postings, but I don't know how to locate it without first finding a thread to which he has contributed.

Every message in every thread begins with the writer's name in blue ~ as a "clickie." If you click on the name, you get to a list of all of that person's contributions, in reverse chorological order. Access to Malcolm's list would be helpful to anyone who doesn't know him yet; just about ANY randomly-selected message will be an example of some really erudite folk scholarship.

Joe, elf, clone, whoever: can you link us to Malcolm's message-list?
Done. -Joe-

I don't usually post to threads like this but - well Malcolm is one of those people who consistently restore my faith in this place with his freely-given and hard-won erudition. In a fairer world his work would already have been recognised with honorary degrees and doctorates. Let's hope the medics looking after him are as careful and well-versed in their field as he is in his.
Get well soon.

I have just returned from visiting Malcolm this evening with Ron and Jenny Day. He sends his regards to all those who have wished him well. Please feel free to send messages and cards if you knew him or have ever contacted him personally.

Ward K1, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield S10 2JF will get him.

We have permission to take his laptop in - that will make him happier than anything, especially if he can get an internet connection (!!)

I asked him for a quote to his many friends on here. "I liked the morphine but I don't intend to make a habit of it" was what he offered.

He looked a lot, lot better than when I saw him two days ago - a lot better. He is likely to be in for a few days at the least.

Ever since I joined Mudcat and Malcolm was the first to respond to my query, I've regarded him in awe for both his innate good sense as well as his encyclopedic knowledge (or that to know where to look if he doesn't have the answer immediately at hand). For him to show human frailties such as illness is almost beyond my ken.

But, life is life and, Malcolm, you have all my best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. Along with Steve I can only offer my wishful thinking, but be assured I'm wishfully thinking as hard as I can for you.

Many, many thanks, for all your good wishes. I'm not in the slightest bit religious and to the best of my knowledge I don't think Malcolm is, but if wishful thinking counts for anything Malcolm should make a very speedy recovery. A few of us this side of the pond have extensive indexes and access to enormous libraries, but Malcolm is very special, he holds much of this knowledge in his head!

To get to over 100 messages in 24 hours is a great achievement and I am sure Malcolm will be delighted. Well done to all of you. If anything could revive anyone you can. Thanks you for all your prayers and messages of good will. And I have printed the thread (just the names I hasten to add).

I will see him this evening and will report on progress around 8.00 pm UK time.

Thanks Steve - I've been dithering for days whether to say anything here!

We all need him well again, the sooner the better.

Hi,
I've just received a very worrying call from 'Folkiedave' to inform me that Malcolm has been taken in to hospital and is seemingly very ill. Either Dave or I will update this post as we get more information.

I'm sure all those who know Malcolm and have had queries answered by his encyclopedic knowledge of song on Mudcat, will wish him a speedy recovery.
