I met him once at the Nettlebed Folk Festival, when it was still at the Bull Hotel there in 1976. I just Googled him, to find that he passed away in 1980 at only 42 years old. It would be a good thing to keep this thread up and see what further information emerges. He was a very entertaining and cheerful man and I am sorry to read of his passing.

Main one is "Fine Old Yorkshire Gentleman" with what I feel is the definitive version of this song and is still being sung by his two daughters Ruth Price and Sadie Greenwood, the 'tina accompaniment is brilliant and played now by his daughters

There are a number of traditional Yorkshire songs on here too

Bill also made another album which featured the harmony group "Squire" and has Barretts Privateers, one of the first of Stan Rogers songs to escape Canada and a version of "Drinks Round me boys"

Ruth has a website with Bill Price link (his name as hyperlink)

he was a great guy was Bill

Wendy Price now lives in Whitby and plays melodeon for Persephone, sings and may have some of Bill's records somewhere still, tho' ebay would cost the earth I think!

I do have some copies of Fine Old Yorkshire Gentleman and I Sing as I Please - the German record. There seems to be a bit of a revival going on and I have this year received a few recordings of Bill made at live concerts in The States and Germany. We may put out a CD with these recordings on, but I'm in Pakistan at the moment and wont have time to look into this until the spring. Watch this space.

Squeezy, the SuperSearch will bring up several threads which provide further info on Bill Price.

I'm not prepared to sell my copy of 'I Sing As I Please' but I might do a tape for you over Christmas. PM me if you're interested.

This is a lovely thread. It's so good to see that my old pal Bill is still remembered. It's also good to know that his daughters are singing too. Hello Wendy, not seen you in ages but I remember singing around your area some years ago. \On Mudcat I am 'Burl' but you will know me as Roy Harris. Best wishes for Christmas and New year.

Is there any truth in the tale I heard some years ago that at Whitby festival, Bill came out of a pub session and wanted to get to the other side of the harbour, but couldn't be bothered to walk round by the swing bridge so he swam across?

I dunt think Bill was a swimmer, however!

Do listen to Ruth and Sadie where ever you can!

Bill's ~ Fine Old Yorkshire Gentleman ~ is a fine song, as is the song accompaniment put together by Bill and Wendy and now played by Ruth/Sadie on his 'tina

One or two songs now on www.yorkshirefolksong.net from Ruth and Sadie, sadly none of Bill's as we are treading copyright/recordings softly, but if we can have permission from the holders, more than happy to include![no names no pack drill]

Ruth and Bill both have their own websites too

I sing as I please ~ , had the group "Squire" as backing to a number of the songs, and I think past members included Dave Taylor, Hilary Simpson, Carole Garbut

A great chap, was Bill

Just for an update.
The various amateur recordings garnered by Bill's family are now installed on Bill's website. There are over 50 items in mp3 format but bear in mind that the audio quality is variable, though it is wonderful to hear that unique voice again.

the story is better than that, he did swim across but then was not seen for a day but subsequently turned up in fine form.Mick Haywood can verify the story.

Ah Wendy has some great songs about FOYG and when she and her friend stumbled upon the gamekeeper who sang this song ~ eventually she and Bill went see if they could pinch it ~ but the gamekeeperf was wiley old lad and Bill was fast asleep drunk when he came to sing his party piece ~ eventualy got it though! A version of Wensleydale Lad and Like a fine old English Gentleman (became Yorkshire Gentleman) seems the regional name could change willy nilly ~~ as needed (always Yorkshire for Bill)

Ray

Bill, Wendy and Mick Haywood were also good friends of Tom Daniel who I think was lucky to stand 5' tall

I wondered if it was a Mudcatter who had bought it. I already have both records or I would have bid for it myself. I'm pleased that you got it.
