Happy Holidays, all! I am delighted to find you here. Yep--lyrics request. In fifth grade (1958) , in the classroom of Mrs. Goulding in the Mullen-Hall school in Falmouth, MA, we sang a song from our songster with these lyrics:

"Brown fields are empty where green corn was growing,
Asters have faded away.
Leaden and icy the river is flowing,
Picture November in tones of gray."

It has a haunting minor mode melody . I'd love to be able to sing the whole thing again. I associate learning this song with learning an English version of HaTikvah ("Look toward the East with promise ever bright, Golden horizon heralding the day..." , a stirring choral "March Slav" and a round called "Sweet the Evening Air of May." Mrs. Goulding was terrific:-)
Any clues? Thanks!

I remember this song. "Bonfires are burning and blue smoke is lifting" is one line.

I had the same songbook in Mrs. Taggart's fourth grade music class in 1964. The book had a salmon-pink cover, if I recall.

Another song from that book I am trying to track down:

"Four great horses at the gate/

Toss their manes of dapple-dapple gray."

Not sure if that is quoted verbatim. I do remember the 'dapple-dapple gray" line.

OK, now we may be getting somewhere. There's a Ginn & Company school songbook titled Singing Every Day it's in the Our Singing World series. I have other songbooks in that series, but I don't think I have Singing Every Day, which was published in 1959. Editor was Lilla Belle Pitts. Here's the index of the songbook: (click)

Johnny Schmoker
Polly-wolly-doodle
Little red caboose
Home on the range
Susie, little Susie
High, Betty Martin
Haul away, Joe
Old MacDonald had a farm
How-de-do?
How sweet is our singing
Clapping game
Playtime
Merry-go-round
Up in a swing
Oopsy Daisy Oh!
Little girl
Strawberry jam, cream of tartum
Whither, little path?
Ho-heigh-ho
Hare and hounds
Crossing the brook
There was a man in our town
Once a lady loved a swine
Too-ril-to-too
The sow with the measles
Frog went a-courtin'
The bee and the pup
Ten little piggies
Hot dog
Grumbling Joe
I've been workin' on the railroad
Leave her, Johnny
Haul on the bowlin'
Blow, boy, blow
Good-by, old paint
My home's in Montana
Night herding song
With my bow
In the ice
Salad greens
Annie goes to the cabbage patch
San Sereni
The little tailor
The noble Duke of York
Four in a boat
Marching 'round the levee
I'll give to you a paper of pins
Dog tick
Choose you rock candy
Rise you up, my true love
Pop! Goes the weasel
The pawpaw patch
Miss Jenny-O-Jones
The Bridge of Avignon
Brother, come and dance
The land of the Dutch, Dutch, Dutch
Come, boys and girls
Ferry me across the water
Whitecaps on the sea
The polka
Here come three sailors
Three pirates
My mother's songs
Home, sweet home
Hush, little baby
Winkum, winkum
The little sandman
Winter lullaby
Moon's lullaby
Sweet and low
Hush-a-bye, birdie
Go to sleep
Little Carl must go to rest
Cradle song
Lullaby
Good night
Prelude
Hear our prayer, O Lord
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow
Rise up, O men of God!
Come, thou almighty king
For health and strength
Lovely appear
Children of the heavenly king
Billy boy
Oh! Susanna
The Arkansas traveler
'Liza Jane
Old Dan Tucker
Dinah, won't you blow your horn
Sonatina
Theme from Sonata IV
A melody
Glorious things of thee are spoken
Andante
Serenade
Happy Birthday
Birthday greeting
Three little witches
Hallowee-ee-een
The pumpkin man
Thanksgiving song
Thanksgiving day
Come, ye thankful people, come
Song of the spirit dance
Praise song
We wish you a Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
O come, all ye faithful (adeste fideles)
Deck the hall
It came upon the midnight clear
We three kings of Orient are
Here lies a baby
The friendly beasts
This is the time of joy
O Jesu sweet
He is born, the holy child
I heard the bells
New Year song
Flag song
America
The star-spangled banner
Battle hymn of the Republic
I have a little valentine
One, he loves
Winter is o'er
The heavens are telling
The wonderful world
When I climb a hill
Mists of daybreak
Morning song
Lovely evening
Out of Earth come good things
Stars
Clouds
The lovely moon
The rain
The brook
The river song
Rivers of China
Down the stream
Out on the ocean
The north wind
Ships
Thirty days has September
Autumn's here!
Fun in the leaves
Raking leaves
The harvest home
Sung at harvest time
Jack Frost
Winter has come
The merry skaters
We can go out coasting
Jingle bells
Mister snowman
The snow is dancing
Gently the snow is falling
All the birds will soon be here
The spring rain
Away to the meadows
Little man in the woods
Rowing to camp
Spring garden
Maypole dance
The sunrise tints the dew
Come, May!
Little butterfly
The bee's a busy peddler
A little green bird
The brown bird
Fol-de-rol and riddle-ma-ree
The squirrel
A possum hunt
The barnyard song
Four great horses
Evening song
Here, rattler, here
Halka had a rooster red
Oh, poor chick-a-biddy
Up yonder
Grasshopper green
Oranges and lemons
The bell ringer
Echo
The flute lesson
Sailing across the bay
Little old tugboat
The man that runs the crane
The drum-major
It's fun
Bring my flute to me
The gong and the drum
The shepherd's tune
Pasquale
Susan Blue
Jack and the beanstalk
Sleeping Beauty
Marching song
One man went to mow
Latin-American medley
Hungarian dance
The bird call
Drummer's medley
Hear them bells!
The angel band
The Marines' hymn
Quiet night

I was hoping that "Picture November" would be in the songbook with "Four Great Horses," but it wasn't. Anyhow, here's "four Great Horses." I swear we've had this song in a thread before, but I can't find it.

FOUR GREAT HORSES
(Czech folk song, translated by Alma Alice Turechek)

Four great horses at the gate
Toss their heads of dapple, dapple grey,
Stretch their necks and swish their tails,
Pay wand snort and whinny and neigh.

REFRAIN
Tra la la, tra la la, tra la la la la la la la la,
Tra la la, tra la la, tra la la la la.

Wearing his new cap of green,
Pepichek comes down the winding lane.
Four abreast he'll harness them,
Plow the fields and cut the grain.

Anybody know what Czech song this comes from?

I'm still hoping to find "Picture November," or whatever the proper title of the song is. I ordered the Ginn & Co. Fifth Grade songbook, Singing Together, but it hasn't arrived yet. The Fourth Grade Giunn book doesn't have the song, nor does the Silver Burdett Fifth Grade book.

Look toward the east whence come a glowing light
Golden horizons heralding the night
Faith beckons you with promise ever bright
How hope will abide with you along the way.
Climb on upward dauntless soul
Onward steadfast toward a distant goal
Steadfast courageous hope will lead you on your quest
There in the East, the mountain's golden rest.

Or close to that.....

These are the lyrics I remember from when I learned it 55 years ago:

Look toward the east whence comes the glowing light
Golden horizon heralding the day
Faith beckons you _________________ (what I remember makes no sense, so you're probably right)
Hope will abide to help us on our way.
Climb on upward, dauntless soul
Onward, steadfast, toward the distant goal
Steadfast, courageous, hope will lead you on your quest
There in the east, the mountain's golden crest.

Very close... funny, this thread is the only place I've been able to find these lyrics.

Hi, Friends!
Thank you for your lovely contributions to the search for "Picture Novmber"! Lovely to have the line about bonfires and blue smoke added.

Does this help? I think the book is the same one that included various ethnic flavored songs. One was a tune that said,
"Ling fu, go to sleep, my dear--lotus blooms are drifting near.
Night is on the hill.
Temple bells are still" --a sort of Chinese or Japanese lullaby
ina pretty Asian sounding mode.
Another was the "Elephant's Lullaby,
"The hippo has gone to rest
Giraffe and ostrich too!
So bye-lo
it is time to go
To the Elephants' Dream land Zoo."

The Chinese song is in Our Singing World: Singing Together book as Chinese Evening Song:

CHINESE EVENING SONG
(words:Nancy Byrd Turner, tune: Chinese folk tune)

Temple bells ring soft and clear
Down the twilight hill,
Dusky quiet hill
Where the shadows fill.
Ling Foo, go to sleep, my dear,
Lotus blooms are drifting near;
Night is on the hill;
Temple bells are still

Upon the hillside are berries sweet,
'Mid hazel brush, oaks and birches;
T h e little goats leap with nimble feet,
T h e river through the valley rushes.
The smell of earth and the sigh of trees
And songs of birds float upon the breeze.

(In fact I first found it in the programme notes for the 50th Annual Ann Arbor r May Festival (Ann Arbor 50th May Day - pdf. That gave me the title to look for elsewhere.)

It's on page 141 in the Singing World book, which you can find at archive.org: Singing Together.

Sadly neither the elephant song nor the original request seem to be in the book. I do have 4 or 5 others to look through, but it's bed time here! I'll have a look tomorrow.

Back in February I did find a hint about the OP's request "Brown fields are empty where green corn was growing..". I found the first line on a website as a photo caption: Renew and Remember - Yesterday's Treasures Enjoyed Today (under last picture on the page).

I emailed the webmaster Beverley (Hello and welcome to Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior) on the 28th Feb and had forgotten about it, but today I had a reply as follows:

"Hello Mick,

I will look for the rest of the song....off hand I don't remember where I found it. I will keep this in mind and look around in my old music books and get back to you if I find it."

So we may yet solve another mystery of the ages!.

Isn't the internet full of nice helpful people, who'll take time out for people they've never met. (This is Mudcat! Preaching to the converted!)

I should have added - I learned this song to the tune of the Israeli national anthem, in a school in Skokie, IL which had a substantial Jewish population.

I've been beating my brain trying to figure out this same song-- to the tune of Hatikvah. I sang it in 5th grade, Delano, California in 1963. I was missing a few words in the first 2 lines, so now I have them. Thanks so much.   I only remember this same piece of the song. Those were the good old days-- when we learned all these different songs in the classroom or auditorium.

I think the first part is:
Look toward the east whence comes a glowing light
Golden horizons heralding the day
Faith beckons you with promise ever bright
Hope will abide with you along the way
(then all the rest is the same as you have noted)
The lines above alternate with rhyming.

Wish I knew for sure, but I think maybe the first 4 lines did not alternate in rhyming as I had previously stated. The rest of the song rhymes every line after each other, so that would not be consistent with the format if you alternate with rhyming. Therefore, I think rhyming is with the previous line and not alternating.

So it would have to go:

Look toward the east whence comes a glowing light
Faith beckons you with promise ever bright
Golden horizons heralding the day
Hope will abide with you along the way
(then all the rest is as we all agree and remember)

I also learned this in fifth or sixth grade around 1963, to the tune of Hatikvah (the Israeli National Anthem.) At the time it gave language and a melody to my idealism.
Look toward the east whence comes the glowing light
    Golden horizon heralding the day
Faith beckons you w promise ever bright
Hope will abide w you along the way
CHORUS: Climb on upward dauntless soul
Onward steadfast toward the distant goal
Steadfast courageous hope will lead you on your quest
There in the east the mountain's golden crest.
Lift up your hearts, break forth in glorious song
Sing to the new sky's promise of the day
Friends who are true and friends who are strong
Join in our song to help us on our way
    (Repeat chorus)
