Last Friday I saw Jogleresa (who play early and trad. music from Europe and the Middle East), with member Claire Salaman, a nyckelharpa player. Beautiful. I had never knowingly heard one before. The gig was unamplified in a fairly large tiered venue, but still we could hear the echoey resonance within the body of the nyckelharpa. What a treat indeed.

There were at least a dozen of them gathered together upstairs at the King & Queen last month for Johan Hedin's workshop.
Very, very weird till he explained that he always warns an audience with "and now I'm going to play an instrument from another planet".

There was a great concert in York last week, with Clare Salaman on nyckelharpa and Vivien Ellis singing, as part of the Christmas Early Music Festival. A wonderful noise (from both of them!!)

Well, pavane, it sounds like Trier was a great place for a music lover to be. And such interesting kinds of music too.

open mike, I went to see the picture. That's certainly an unusual instrument.

i played my nyckelharpa and my newest wierd swedish fiddle...
Träskofiol (CLOG FIDDLE OR WOODEN SHOE FIDDLE) on Friday at our
Santa Lucia Festival of Lights.

see picture here
http://www.osterlenagar.se/osterlenagar/konst/akvarell/traskofiol.htm
this is an even rarer treat as there are not many of these fiddles in existance. they are from Skane, southern Sweden.

I was in Trier one Christmas Day (in Germany the trains run every day). There was a session in a riverside pub with snow falling outside.
(Irish, of course, for reasons amply illustrated in threads passim on fascists hijacking music).
Last weekend this nyckelharpa, Henrik, dropped by to visit his friend Henry the Hoover and go to the nyckelharpa doctor who lives nearby.
Oooh, there's always something happening in North London in case you can't get to Trier . . .

And I how could I forget the German Barrel-organ group. How do you synchronise three or more of these things? Must be an art.

Wandering through Trier Christmas Market yesterday (14th) I had the rare treat of seeing Mariusz Radwanski playing his Nyckelharpa.

Also in the market were a brass band from St. Petersburg, an accordeon duo from Minsk, and a didgeridoo (plus the obligatory Perivian pan-pipes).
