I've had the following cars: Ford Econoline van - Poor quality ( would never buy another Ford ), Dodge Neon - Poor quality, Chrysler Caravan - fairly good quality (although many others have chronic transmission failure problem ), Toyota Corolla - Excellent quality and reliability.

My RAV4 is perfect.

My previous car, a 2004 Toyota station wagon, ran steadily for 150K miles and had no problems except a bad case of psoriasis (the paint peeled).

I had a Chevy Cavalier before that and it stopped dead in the middle of rush hour one morning because a lousy capacitor went out on a circuit control board for the battery.

I had a wonderful big Chevy Van with a V8 engine before that, and it generally ran very well, but the carbon sensor on the throttle control got coated and it suddenly started limping and choking and going no more than 30 mph until we had the damn sensor replaced.

Before that I had a Toyota 4WD pickup truck that always ran perfectly.

2000 Ford Winstar with no problems. Have always had good luck with Fords and for some reason I sit more comfortably in them.

Worst nightmare - a Chevy with a faulty catalytic convertor (a company car) which I finally abandoned on Queens Blvd in NYC. It was less than six months old. Damn thing would shut down - no power steering/no power brakes with no warning. Nearly got me killed.

We had a Ford Escort Estate on which the electrics would go with monotonous regularity.

We now have a Toyota Yaris (the tall, estate model, you know, a Grandad car!) in cherry red and it's lovely. So far, had it about 20 months and it's not had a mechanical thing wrong with it.

Even the stereo is fantastic. My only complaint, no sun roof, but hey, with electric windows, air con and a great stereo, who needs one?!

I have a 1999 Subaru Outback station wagon and I love it! I bought it used from my boss a couple of months ago and it already has allowed me to drive in road conditions that I never would have dared with my Chevy S-10 pick-up. And this is without the snow tires!

Currently driving a 2002 VW Passat and it's the best car ever! 130K miles and nothing major wrong with her. It's comfortable, rides like a dream and has a ton of features. I bought it from the original owner about 3 years ago and I hope it lasts forever. The only drawback is when things to break it's more expensive to repair, but it's worth it! I'd like to shake the hand of the man who invented heated seats, too!!

My previous vehicle was a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. I got rid of it when, at 200K miles, things started to go. Exhaust system was rattling and such. If I'd been willing to put the time and money in she probably would have gone another 100K miles.

I'm a Volkswagen lover. I like the design, fit and finish; I know what to expect from them; and they come with Diesel engines. I really, really like Diesel cars -- as long as you keep the body in good shape the engine just keeps going and going and going. Also, I like passing fuel stations.

I've had only one VW lemon: a 1980 Rabbit that suffered from mysterious water leaks that tended to soak the fusebox. I drove a 1986 "classic Diesel" Golf for 17 years, and sold it to a guy trading up from a 1982 Rabbit that his wife wouldn't get into any more.

We now have two cars. Number 1, Indigo Jones, is a 2003 Jetta TDI station wagon (yes, a Granddad car) that comfortably hauls us and all our stuff -- including any God's quantity of instruments -- wherever we want to go, with a range of more than 1,100 km on one 50-litre tank of fuel on all-season radial tires. Number 2, Eric the Red, is Edmund's new 2009 "clean Diesel" Jetta sedan, which has yet to make a long trip but has already proved itself an excellent winter-handling car despite its silly special windscreen wipers.

My Accord is perfection in engineering and artistry.

Bought it new in 1988. Twenty years this month and 247K. Maintenance costs next to nothing. Paint is still deep shine black. I want to be buried in it.

After years of adequate but uninspiring Saturn wagons, I defected three years ago tomorrow (happy early anniversary, honey!) to a Mini Cooper. It's one of the newer BMW Coopers; I haven't time or money for the required maintenance on a classic British car, and having had a Triumph 2000 years ago I speak with some authority on that subject.

But anyway,how I love my car! I haven't regretted it for a moment. To get to work, I have to cross a mountain range on a highway that's notorious for its accident levels, and I've never felt safer than in my Mini. It really grabs the road. Plus, the mileage is great, and with the included maintenance, we felt that the price was quite reasonable.

And while it's small, my son and I found room to take a 2-week car-camping road trip to Montana in it a couple of years ago. We were packed to the rafters, but that was part of the fun.

This is my 3rd after previously owning a Subaru Outback, and another Forester.

Hard to tell. My 1991 Honda Civic Si is just about broken in (189,000 miles) and my new (1994) Mazda Miata is positively virginal at 87,000. I'll let you know when something breaks.

Quality varies so much by model year that we can no longer "buy with brand loyalty." Today's biz environment has removed the reasonableness of brand loyalty in favor of the big-box marketing approach.

1999 Toyota Solara, an excellent car all around...150 k
1999 Subaru Legacy, same as above...226 k, (like a snow mobile in snow)
2002 Acura (Honda) RSX, (130 k)m good, but not up to the standards of those above.

I gave my daughter my 1990 Toyota Celica in 2000, with 150k on it. Mechanically it is still fine at 236k....and was driven every winter on salty roads since 90.

My neighbour has a 1994 Toyota Celica with 590 K on it, did only regular maintaince on it... and it still works and looks fine.

Caution, Japanese cars can be good, but you have to rust proof them every year....unless you live in really warm/dry environments.

My ancient Nissan Micra is wonderful. Very fuel efficient 50mpg and so far no major costs beyond the odd tyre and minor repairs.

2, 7, and 9 series Volvos (redblock, ie 4 cylinder). Change the cambelts, change the oil, clean the oilbreather, they go for ever. Turbo 2.3 litres and the twincams go fast for ever! Estates - for the man who has everything, and wants to take it with him!. But thirsty. Best I ever get is 25 to the UK gallon. I have a lead right foot.

I've had everything from a 1928 Dodge to a couple of Cadillacs and even two Mercedes Benz. Right now we are driving a 2001 Hyundai, and I have to say I find no fault with this car. 32 mpg, snappy, and well worth the price which is much lower than a Toyota.

We also have a 1997 Chevrolet pick up that is like driving my recliner. Only one serious problem so far; the fuel pump. It's inside the tank and when it went to hell it cost me $700.00 to fix.

I'm hoping that Detroit will be forced to learn how to build quality cars as they did way back when.This antique Chevy we have is a good example of what they used to build. Solid and comfortable.

Heric has a 1988 Honda Accord, the cool-looking one with the flip-up headlights. I had a dark metallic red 1989 Accord with gold pinstriping and gold wheels, and I thought it was a perfect car. I promised to sell it cheap to my girlfriend's stepdaughter when she completed two semesters of college, which I thought she would never do - I was wrong, and sold the car to her for a song. She promptly bashed it up, and sold it a while later.

I bought a bright red 1999 Honda Civic two-door, which I loved even more than the Accord, but that went to my stepson when he started to commute to college this year. So far, no damage - but I rarely get to drive it any more.

So, this year, I bought a rather staid 2006 Civic from the estate of a dead priest, who had driven the car less than 10,000 miles. After two sexy red cars, this one is a bit of a letdown, but I have to admit that it's wonderful to drive and that is has a terrific sound system.

The "Silver Ghost" is the sixth Honda I've purchased, and all have been perfect cars.

Apart from a Volvo V70 estate (station wagon in US) I have had Nissans for the last thirty years... no problems with any of them. Will stick with the brand as they seem so reliable.

When in US

I learned to drive a 1972 seirra grey Chevy Impala drove numerous 10 hour trips back and forth eastern Virginia / western West Virginia between 76 and 79 (exhusband's college years) and to Midland Texas. Damn thing was a tank. -Totaled by a gun wielding lunatic in Midland Texas in 1982.

1980 dark blue Chevy Citation - went forever with few problems until the fuel injector crapped out. Still used it as work vehicle when I had domestic business in 1989-93, until I could not handle pumping the gas pedal 100 (yes I really mean 100) times to get the thing to start. I mean gods the work (cleaning houses) was hard enough. Had to use a wooden crutch to hold the hatch up to get my equipment out.

1988 white Isuzu Trooper (my favourite) kept overheating and cracking engine block due to stupid $6.00 thermostat. Got in the habit of changing the thermostat every 6 months just to be safe. This truck was haunted. If I left any windows (these were NOT power windows) open, even a crack over night, some how the lights would go on and the battery would be dead in the morning. I learned after about the third battery replacement to check all the windows before going to bed. Car was still going pretty strong when I left the US for the UK in 2003.

I don't drive now and God I miss it. Chris' car is a 1998 Seat Arosa. Has had a few niggling little problems, but on the whole good value for the money. Soon to be replaced with either Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Focus.

I've got an N reg ford escort...it's fine, goes well now Paul replaced the fan belt which went the other week, and it has a heater.

Paul's got a collection....landrover...no heater but still goes very well. A military lorry (don't know which one but it's BIG!) a 1955 Willis Jeep....thats ok but it's open top and only has 3 gears and one of them is reverse. Also got 2 range rovers one is for off roading so he doesn't damage the landie again!

I agree with MrsDuck. The only problem I had with a Micra was that it was too small for 2 people, luggage and camping gear for a festival. The Almera isn't so hot on petrol consumption but I can drive to Whitby in comfort and its just as reliable.

I've got a 2005 Ford Focus and it's fine for my purposes. Gets 28 mpg on city streets (seldom drive freeways). It's a little spartan for my taste, since it doesn't have cruise-control or power windows/doors, but I got a good deal on it. Before this, I had a 1998 Ford Contour. I have a very narrow driveway, so I'm limited in my choices.

My 1989 Corolla now has over 273,000 miles on it - original engine, original 5-speed tranny - and still can get 30 to 35 mpg on the highway and over 25 in city-street driving. Never had a ring job. valve job, or anything more major than replacement of timing belt (twice), alternator (twice), clutch (once), struts (once) and brakes PRN. Damn fine little car!

here goes,
i have had all fords since 1986, mainly trucks, but just bought my first car since 1979, a ford fusion.
all of my trucks have gone at least 200,000 mi. for me, with no major problems. the line up now is...
1999 f-150 4x4 w/ 228,000 on it, best truck i ever owned, now in the hands of my son.
1999 f-250 diesel 4x4 w/ 177,000, for towing my camper, 20mpg empty, 13 mpg towing a 8k trailer, best mpg i know of towing.
1997 expedition 4x4, 230,000, room for 8 and gets 16 mpg. was the wifes, but now one of the daughters.
2008 fusion, 31- 33 mpg on the hwy, rides like a large car, very pleased so far.
2008 chevy malibu, wifes company car, nice, but i like my fusion more.
i keep buying fords because they have been very dependable, more than the toyotas and nissans i had in the early 80's. don't know why some have had their problems with domestic cars, might not be the cars, might be the drivers. i've seen some people treat their cars pretty bad.

Here in NZ I have a Mitsubishi van, 13 years old and never any trouble, but it is really a mobile toolbox.
The family car is a 3litre V6 Toyota Camry automatic, which may go on forever if the electrics don't get any worse. It is capable but boring, and prefers to cruise.
The Mitsi 1.8litre manual that it replaced was getting unreliable at 210,000K, but would eat the Toyota, despite the size difference, on anything but a dead straight road, and it felt safer on that. More flexible suspension, too.
I liked that car, but it was always trying to kill me. "C'mon, let's go FASTER!"

We've had a lot of Peugeots (104, 6 x 205s, 505 estate, 2 x 206s, 306 estate) and had no real problems with them but we've avoided 307s because they are reported to get electrical faults. Having said that my 205GTi had electrical problems but that was to do with a non-standard alarm system that once locked me out of the car with the engine running. Lucky that the sunroof was open.
I've had a mark one Ford Escort that juddered at over 65 mph, a Ford Fiesta which I wrote off when it skidded without warning and a Ford Sierra 1.6 that drank like a fish. Don't like Fords now!

I agree - I learned to drive in one of them. They're very nippy. I'd have one if I didn't need something a bit bigger for taking to festivals, transporting teenagers and dog, etc.

I own a 6 year old Ford KA. It's fine, though I have had to have a new clutch and some other bits that cost me £700 just before Christmas last year...I think it has its MOT in January *fingers crossed*

My first car - an Oldsmobile. I understand why they don't make them anymore.
No.2 - a Rambler - actually an American Motors Hornet. They stopped calling them Ramblers, but that's what it was. It was ok.
As for cars that they still make, my Chevy pickup was alright. My chevy Blazer had problems and I'd never buy another. My Jeep Wrangler was fun to drive but a piece of crap when it came to repairs, which were often and expensive. If I totalled all the repairs, I'd probably find that they equaled the original price of the car.
My Toyota Echo is the best car I've ever had. The problem is with the pedals. They're so close together that if I'm not careful, I end up stepping on the gas and brake at the same time. I hit a deer the other night, so it's in the shop. I'm driving a rental right now, a Dodge Dakota pickup truck. It's really comfortable, and I'd consider buying one. The only problem is that you can't fast forward the CD player. I have no idea how they overlooked that.

It is interesting that the Japanese motor industry, which seems to garner all the kudos in this thread, was taught process improvement methods by an American business guru whose advices were being ignored by American industry untilt he great economic invasion by Japan in the 1980's. I have forgotten his name, unfortunately.

We've a 2003 Renault Kangoo 1.5 diesel. Does 55mpg and despite the small engine for such a big car it moves like shit off a shovel! Fold down the back seats and you have a van. It's the best car I've ever owned.

I do not share my sister's love of VW's, they are overpriced, less reliable and their maintenance more expensive when compared to the Japanese vehicles I have known.

I am absolutely in love with my '06 Hyundai Sonata and would recommend any Hyundai to any person who asks ~ certainly anyone in the market for a new car.

I believe that this company's products provide the best value-for-price in the entire industry, because the company does not have the well-established reputation for quality enjoyed by its Japanese competitors. The first Hyundais to arrive in the US were, indeed, of dubious quality, and the company is still paying the price for their damaged reputation in the form of rock-bottom MSRPs. The quality has improved, dramatically, and the reputation will improve in time, probably pretty soon, at which point the prices will rise until roughly equivalent to Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

My previous car was a Toyota Camry, also an excellent and economical vehicle. My feeling about the Sonata is that it is every bit as good as a Camry (or an Accord), gets slightly better gas milage, provides significantly greater interior room (especially in the back seat), and costs several thousands dollars less. What more could you ask for?

Because it was red and I didn't have much time.
Not had it long enough to say how good a 5 year-old car is, but the detail design leaves a lot to be wished.

three windscreen wipers, all different sizes with different carriers and even the rubber is different! Designed for driving on the right so the little wiper leaves dirt right in the view-line, and the big one doesn't clear the rain in the middle of the arm right in the view line. I could go on about a lot more poor detail. Not sure where it was desinged but it is made in France, and that is of significance.

The previous version of the Nissan Micra was a lot better on detail, made in the UK I believe.

I hate to say it because I don't like bringing the wrath of the motoring gods down, but I do have my fingers crossed as I type:-)

Everyone said I was mad to buy a Fiat but my 2003 Stilo 1.9 JTD has been wonderful up to now. I got it at at a year old and have added over 60,000 trouble free miles to it up to now. Unlike earlier Fiats the build quality is excellent, apart from an ashtary that doesn't close and a broken glove box hinge. The 1.9 JTD engine is simply the best diesel I have driven. Economical, coupled with amazing performance for it's size and the comfort and space is great.

I would swap it tomorrow. But only for the estate car version with air con:-)

Holidaying in Wales, just collected hubbie's daughter and her friend from Treforest on the way to Cardiff, black BMW pulls out of blind street into main thoroughfare just in front of us causing us to swerve and break suddenly. What popped out of my mouth.
