My son still loves this video. Last night I showed it to him as a way of getting him to drink his bedtime milk (you parent your way and I'll parent mine) and after drinking the milk, he asked for "More Kendall."

This morning he went right to my computer and said, "Kendall?"

After watching the video through he stayed on my lap and said, "Habba!"

Huh?

It comes from a sermon illustration by the evangelist Dwight L. Moody. Ed Reese, in his biographical sketch of Philip Bliss:

"One time Mr. Moody was telling the story of a shipwreck in one of his messages. On a dark stormy night, a large passenger boat cautiously edged toward the Cleveland harbor. The pilot knew that he could only find the harbor channel by keeping two lower shore lights in line with the main beacon. "Are you sure this is Cleveland?" asked the captain. "Quite sure, Sir," replied the pilot. "Where are the lower lights?" he asked. "Gone out, Sir!" was the reply. The pilot turned the wheel, but in the darkness, he missed the channel. The boat crashed on the rocks and many lives were lost that night. Mr. Moody's closing words were, "Brethren, the Master will take care of the great lighthouse; let us keep the lower lights burning." At the next meeting with Mr. Moody, Mr. Bliss sang this song... Let the Lower Lights Be Burning. It was published in 1874. It is said that this was the favorite hymn of Billy Sunday."

He had a brave and tragic death. Must write a song about him one day.

I had seen this one before. What nails me about it, every single time, is the delivery. No matter how good one is, a learned listener can spot the difference between those that are delivering a song, and those that have lived the song. Not to say that the former can't do an accomplished job, but the latter has a certain something that only comes from (in this case) having salt in your face. The voice, my old friend, was stunning, the "turning of the phrase" dead on, and you should be giving thanks for the gift of that voice for however long you had it. No person gets to know what is coming down the pike, so they need to accept their gifts and use them to the best they are able as long as they have them. Judging by what I have seen and heard, you did that very well. Do I wish you still had the voice? Of course. Am I more thankful that I get to hear it, and let my grandkids hear it as an example of a Master at work, you bet your sweet (and wrinkled) old arse. Just don't forget that you have much more to give now. It is fine that we all think you are a great performer, but you have to get these songs into the hands of some youngster. Pass it on, Captain.

And to my younger brother-in-spirit, and his adorable kid (who refers to me as Unca Mickey...Mick says with chest puffed up with pride), I say "Good job". You are a special family, and you are a good man for putting this out there.

Well, the video did everything possible to prevent itself from being heard by you, Kendall. You can hardly blame it for finally succumbing to your technical ministrations.

I understand the bittersweet quality of hearing yourself. On the other hand, the times I have heard you perform in the last few years have been amazingly powerful for me - not because of the quality of your voice, but because of the quality of your person. Somehow your Self has seemed even more present than in the past. I think of you and Jacqui singing "Phoebe Snow" at the Getaway, or the concert you did with Utah. It's like without your vocal abilities, you've got nothing to prove and you can simply be, relying completely on the feeling of words. When you have that, you've really got it - and nothing will ever take it away.

I like the video a lot. It's a wonderful performance. But still, I'd take the real live Kendall any day over some old video.

The information accompanying the video identifies the lighthouse as Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse. While the two lighthouses in the video are on or near Cape Elizabeth, they are not usually called that. The one on land is the Portland Head Light, and the one in the water is Ram Island Ledge Light. Cape Elizabeth Light is at the end of the Cape, and is actually Two Lights, except that the Coast Guard royally screwed up the rear one. Edward Hopper painted both Portland Head and Two Lights.
Owl's Head Light is also on Cape Elizabeth, as is Portland Bug Light.
The area is a lighthouse lover's Paradise.

Joe, back in 1976, NBC Today visited all 50 states and did a short program on each of them. They went to Folk Legacy records and asked who they would recommend to represent Maine, and they said Kendall Morse. They interviewed me, and when I learned that they did not want an imitation character I agreed to do it. They chose the most photogenic lighthouse in America, and the rest is history. I had just gotten that Apollo 12 string guitar and wasn't very good on it yet.

As for the song, that was my Grandfather's favorite song and we sang it at his funeral.It was recorded on Folk Legacy FSI 57. I think it is still available on tapes and I believe Sandy would make a CD if anyone wanted one. There are others songs in it too of course.

What a delight! Thanks so much for posting this. Kendall does a fine job on the song, and it was particularly interesting to me because the Gospel Messengers did this song, too. We learned it from a recording of a black gospel quartet, with a different melody and rhythm. I hadn't heard the third verse, either. Good on you, Kendall!

While bumming around the web this morning, I happened across a rare video of our very own Kendall performing "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning." I post it here with Kendall's permission - he tells me that the recording is from a Today Show performance in 1976.

The link may be a little unreliable - I had problems with it earlier, but it seems to be up right now. I think it's a great performance, replete with the sound of crashing surf and rusty trawlers in the background.
