Hi Jonibee,

I'm glad to have helped, but the "genius" in this case is, as so often, Google itself with the lucky coincidence that the item is currently being advertised on ebay. I'm afraid I never noticed your request back in December so it was well worth your while to refresh it this time.

Matthew,

What a genius, an absolute genius !!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

My quest is over, and I now have the answers I sought to achieve.

Kind regards,

Jonibee

PS. Where were you last December, Matthew, when I launched my quest?? (Joke)

There is an expensive item (£29.99) on ebay at the moment for a "very, very rare vinyl LP" which includes the two songs you've mentioned "Fernando" and "Day is Done":- Folk 77 'I Have a Dream'. The ebay listing says nothing about the singers but you could send a message to the seller to ask for more information. So far as I can see the record label is CMS .... which isn't familiar to me.
By the way if you're tempted to bid for the record check out this site first:- Sounds Travel - Vinyl LPs - Folk which is offering a copy for £8.00!

Matthew Edwards

PS The full track listing shown on the ebay notice seems to fit with your memory of there being a religious angle to the songs:-

MORNING OF MY LIFE

FERNANDO

DAY IS DONE

ANNIE'S SONG

A PLACE IN MY HEART

SCARLET RIBBONS

FORTY-FIVE YEARS

I HAVE A DREAM

LOVING SONG

TOP OF THE WORLD

FOLLOW ME

STREETS OF LONDON

THE BIRD AND THE CHILD

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Hi all,

Am anxious to revitalise this thread, as I am still seeking an answer.

I contacted the Ursuline Convent, as advised, and a dear lady gave me the names of two people who she thought may be able to help in my quest.
Unfortunately, although I wrote to the individuals, neither of them felt able to reply !!! Shame.

Whilst I was extremely grateful for the comments and suggestions previously given, are there any new people on the scene who may be able to help me, or does anyone have any other ideas.

Once again, my thanks in anticipation.

Jonibee

Jonibee, one person's questions at Mudcat are often designed to help ALL the potential searchers zoom in on the answer.

It's great that you are keeping an eye out on this. A lot of requestors ask and then never return or acknowledge that they saw the answer!

Jen,

Please accept my apologies - I have just returned to my computer and read your lataest message.

The girls were probably in their mid to late teens, which, I think, may fit in with your suggestion of Ursuline College/School in Westgate, which would also fit into the pattern.

I'll probably send the Ursuline an email and see if they can throw any light on the matter.

In the meanwhile, once again, sorry for not answering your query.

I am overwhelmed by the responses received thus far, together with the various 'pointers' and offers of help.

I will certainly follow up the leads, but, in the meantime,
THANK YOU ALL so very much, and please please keep your replies coming.

Jonibee,

Am in Broadstairs if you need some local help. Any idea the age of the girls 30 years ago? There are a few RC infant/junior schools, but the only senior school I can think of is The Ursuline in Westgate-on-Sea.

Amos, Christchurch Uni, Broadstairs has not been here for very long - it was only based in Canterbury a short time ago, so can rule that one out.

Another younger school would be St Joseph's in Broadstairs, which was run by nuns, with bad habits, 30 years ago.

I'll keep thinking...

Jen

Sorry I am far too distant to be of help, being in California. But there are a large number of folkies on this forum from the region who may come up with some sort of clues. Hang tough, and you may yet get lucky! :D

In order to attract replies to my previous posting - "A long shot" - I have added 'Kentish' into the header, in order to add focus to the query.

Were I able to remember the names of the Catholic school and church involved, then I would certainly have gone down the route you suggest.

Thank you for your interest

Why don't you identify the Catholic church and school in Broadstairs/Thanet and send them a letter asking for information?
Something like that will probably be remembered.

Wait till the Christmas season is over.

Subject: A Long Shot?
From: Jonibee
Date: 18 Dec 08 - 10:17 AM

Hi All,

Not sure whether you are able to help - or not?

Some 30 years ago, whilst I was living in Whitstable/Chestfield/Herne Bay area, I purchased an LP which I recollect was recorded by a group of girls, who I think were mainly pupils of a Roman Catholic School in the Broadstairs/Thanet region.

If memory serves me correctly, the recording was made in a Kent church, and two of the tracks were 'Day is Done' & 'Fernando'.
All the tracks were of a 'Folk' genre, but some of the tracks may have had a 'religious' flavour.

The group also recorded a second LP, the contents of which I have
totally forgotten.

I very much regret being unable to remember either the name of the
group, or the title of the LPs, but would very much like to trace a
copy/copies.

I know its a 'long shot', but could any of your members please help me in my quest, or at least point me in a particular direction?

I look forward to hearing from you, and thank you in anticipation of a reply.

Yours,

Jonibee
