Magic the two of them. The recording of the Shepherds was made by Doc Rowe, Sutton Bonington, 1988. I was there at the time and recorded the same performance on my own machine, as I found out when I came to check dates and times.

More's the pity that I wasn't there when Phil Tanner recorded FPAHDES. Alas it was a bit before my time.

Hi folks. Just to let everyone know that the December 2008 edition of Worlds of Trad Internet Radio has been successfully uploaded and will be circling the globe until Wednesday January 21st 2009.

As per the time of the year, this month's epistle is loaded with festive melodies from The Liverpool Céilí Band, Benton Flippen, The Gulf Coast Seven and Norman Edmonds. There's the usual colloquy of colloquial carols from Derbyshire, Shropshire and all points north, south, east and west; Harry and Harry and Walter Sealy inculcate us into the mysteries of wassailing; and Bob Copper sings a macabre Christmas eve song that will put you off playing hide and seek for life.

Butterbeans and Susie tell us Papa ain't No Santa Claus, and Lil McClintock says he ain't one either. Almeda Riddle, the Stanley Brothers and Makvirag sing of the delights of Bethlehem, while the Putipu Band of Capri and Lightnin' Hopkins wish us all the best for the new year.

Returning to matters mundane, Len Graham and Willie Clancy disgorge ditties of marital discord; Walter Pardon, George Dunn, Bunk Johnson, Turk Murphy, Lonnie Johnson and Georgia White introduce us to some characters you wouldn't want to trust your wallet with; Martin Hayes brings us some Irish dance music; and three Northumbrian Shepherds bring us some Northumbrian dance music. I asked them to bring a lamb as well, but they left it with someone more deserving. There's some rare fiddling from Canada, some scorching finger picking from Blind Blake, Ramon Montoya, Los Errantes y Sus Guitarras, and Virginia's own E C Ball; there's some more from that brand new monster blues compilation from Fat Possum; and there's a mellifluous clarinet solo from Acker Bilk. No. I haven't flipped. Wait till you hear it.

Oh, and there's a couple of tracks from an important CD of the Agape Children's Choir from Durban in South Africa. Important because these kids are not only marvellous singers, they're AIDS orphans, and the CD is a fund raiser for their orphanage. Do yourselves and them a favour. Have a listen to the choir, remember it's Christmas, and get your credit cards out.

The complete playlist is below and Myspace users can also find it at http://www.myspace.com/

To hear the programme, visit http://www.live365.com/stations/oneworldmusic
, and click on the yellow speaker button. If you haven't logged on you'll need to follow the onscreen instructions to download the station player. Then wait a moment until the ads clear, press the yellow PLAY button and the station will be on the air. Then if you press the green button to the right, you can set Worlds of Trad as a preset. That will save you having to search the next time you listen in.

What a triumph! Santa Claus goes round the world just once a year and it takes him the whole night. Worlds of Trad does it every month in just three hours. And we haven't even got any reindeer. Peace on earth to everyone.

Fred McCormick.
