Of particular interest here is Mr. L. McGuire's attempt to demonstrate the dynamic nature of the folk process by introducing a new figure into the Ashton dance. His failure to cause permanent injury to (let alone make contact with) Mr. S. Skull leaves us to dream fondly of what might have been. Note also the carefully-rehearsed false ending to the display.

Just a quick note from Saddleworth to say thanks to all at Gorton for the Rushcart on Saturday.

Cracking weather and a cracking day, great to see another Rushcart up and running (especially when someone else is doing the rush cutting!) and a proper Northwest Morris do. Now that you've all found your kit, how about coming over to our 'Cart next year as a side?! I know you said it was the last ever Gorton 'Cart, but if there was ever another last Gorton 'Cart, send us an invite!

A wonderful day.The presence of no less than 6 clergy in St James' guaranteed the weather!
Thanks to all the sides who attended, Ian O'Toole for doing a great job on the PA, and all the licensees, particularly John and Alison at The Vale for providing us with somewhere to build the cart, and Les and Lynn and their team at The Nelly for the fantastic breakfasts.
Also, thanks to Gorton Sports And Social for the ceilidh venue, All Blacked Up for the music and all the sponsors, without which the event event wouldn't have taken place.
Finally, the smiles on the faces on the of the public as they watched the parade(when I could see them through a veil of tears!), made us all realise why we started the morrs side thirty five years ago.

Accosted at Saddleworth by the Gorton Press Gang; threatening phone calls from Captain Kirk;......I had no option but to book a place on the Manchester train as soon as I could. I tried recruiting others, but there's no sound from the Earls, and as Blackheath are still recovering from Saddleworth a second dose of North West culture could prove fatal.
Thanks to vague directions from Mr K, I have A good idea of where to go tonight.

the parade will leave The Lord Nelson at approx 10.00 am-approx 10 sides will participate.Matt's session will start at 1 pm in The Vale.The ceilidh will take place at Gorton Labour Club, Cross lane, commencing 7.30 pm. Dancing to "All Blacked Up" A service will be held at St James and Gorton clergy, past and present, will attend.

7 months of poking Chris and finally a result!!
Chris is grumbling that I am online so much that he can't get a look in.
We managed a couple of days at Sidmouth last week (no mean feat when you are running a busy cafe in Scotland during August)and Chris actually put something in the Friday newsletter suggesting people contact Ash. I spoke to Ash's "long suffering wife" Mags last night and she tells me the phone is like 14 years ago. John Kirk is in full flow inviting/enticing/threating sides to attend. T shirts have been designed and will be available - we hope to see an array of vintage Gorton Rushcart t shirts on the day.
Here are the details...
The event is to be held 12th September based around the Vale Cottage in Gorton. Matt Fahey is organising a session in the pub. I don't have the timings yet - need to speak with Ash. I will try to catch up with him on the phone on Sunday and provide more details as soon as possible. Hope this helps.

If one makes the effort to go to the vale cottage in gorton there is a complete room dedicated to the rushcart with many wonderful memories over the years, supplied by many contributers from far and wide.Give youself a treat and mosey on down, all and sundry are welcome.Lots of your questions will be eagerly answererd by the locals,plus that extra bonus of traditional ales and fine food.DONT FORGET THE VALE COTTAGE BEER FESTIVAL 6TH-12TH SEPTEMBER (ENJOY SEE YOU SOON FRANKIE,P)

Manchester City Council gives funds to community groups to support activities like this. If they have not mentioned it so far it is worth contacting them to see what might be available.

Perhaps a Session at the Vale Cottage is called for?

2009 sees the hundredth anniversary of gorton becoming part of the city of Manchester. The city council have asked ash if we can stage a "one off" rushcart. Obviously, it's early days but we're trying to secure funding, venues, etc.
    The ceremony will probably take place on the traditional second saturday in september. Any sides or individuals interested please let me know.More details to follow
