If you know anyone using Word.Net, tell them to find another company to do business with.

From what I can tell, they took the sweat and tears of the poor man that spend 15 years putting together the Cyber Hymnal piece by piece and are not using it for their greedy gains. Notice how EVERY page now has advertising! They are trading off the trust that was built up over the years all for thrity pieces of silver.

The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Cyberhymnal.org as it was was dead. How horrible that a company that purports to serve God is only using God's name for stuffing their pockets!

Pretty UN-Christianlike to bump the CyberHymnal folks so unceremoniously. *hrmph*

I'll be happy when the new site is fully functional. As a music supervisor, I use them extensively, as they have done impeccable research on the origins of the hymns and variations. They have saved me lots of time over the years, since I have yet to find one instance where their info has been incorrect.

Besides, I can get lyrics for sing-a-longs, etc. so everyone is (literally) on the same page. :)

And to quote Joni Mitchell: "Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?"

I, too, went into severe panic/loss mode when I discovered it missing, and thanks to y'all here at Mudcat (a fun resource), I found the new link & info on what had happened.

Unfortunately, "now OK" was a bit premature.

The URL is now http://www.hymntime.com/tch/. According to a note on the homepage,

We are trying to reach our Web hosting company (Word.net) to fix the problem, but so far they have been unresponsive, despite numerous phone calls, pages & e-mails. It seems they may be a one-man company with no backup. We're going to give them a little time to fix problem, but if this drags on very long, we'll have to look for a new Web hosting service.

Please pray that that God will show us His will on how to proceed.

Thanks so much to all who posted information about the Cyber Hymnal site. I went to listen to some of the old favorite Christmas hymns that I have yet to hear this year, and was appalled to find it gone. I did a search, and found y'all's exchanges about it...and I do hope it will be able to be on line again soon. It got me through some difficult times a while back when my mother was very ill. (She was in critical condition, and when I came home to email progress reports to friends and family, I'd listen to some of the old hymns which gave me strength to endure.) It's ironic, just last Sunday, I highly recommended the site to our church organist. I'd meant to send the link to her, but hadn't done it yet. At any rate, in case any of you are suffering from Cyber Hymnal withdrawals, you might check out http://www.episcopalnet.org/CHymnal/ACH/index.html It has the 1940 Episcopal hymnal, which is used by the Anglican Church. The statement that it has been hacked comes from the owner of the site, and he is doing what he can to either get the service provider to fix it or to find a new service provider. He does request our prayers in that regard. He has backup copies of the files (pages, midis etc) so once a safe place to reinstall them is found, it should be possible to get it back online fairly quickly.

I hope the site is not defunct! Whatever happened to it happened since Thanksgiving Day because I was able to access it without any problems on that day, when looking up Thanksgiving/Harvest Hymns. If it has been hacked, how do we report this and to whom? What can be done about it?

Christmas Eve, 8:30 pm, I decided to check out Cyberhymnal for a few background stories to share with my congregation this evening during the sing-along before midnight mass. What a shock to find it gone!! I will pray they're back up soon. I teach in an Episcopal seminary, and frequently send my students to Cyberhymnal to check out a tune or a text.

Some of the difficulty is with encoding, Mudcat is notoriously unfriendly to the writing and encoding systems of a majority of the world's folk including apparently the Portuguese. But the basic idea, that even in Brazil the absence of the Cyberhymnal is being felt, and its presence sorely missed...

Glad to hear it's not the end of the CyberHymnal world. When it does come back, Deborah J. Reyes, please be sure your pianist is aware that the "Noteworthy Composer" files the CyberHymnal offers can easily be printed out to make (not the prettiest, but serviceable) sheet music. The software needed to do so is available for free, and the full software package to be able to edit and save the files is available for about $40.

This is a perfect example of scriptural teachings. If you are depending on someone (persons), you ARE going to eventually be disapointed. I too am handicapped by Cybers absence. But, Ive just gone back to flipping through hymnals, and calling buddies for help.

I was happy to learn that Cyber Hymnal plans to be back on line again soon! Our church can't afford a lot of music - but if our church pianist can hear a tune once, she can usually play it back again - so she listens to the music on cyber hymnal. We try to stick with music which is in the public domain. The old songs are the best - because most people remember the tunes and lyrics from their childhoods.

I feel that Cyber Hymnal provides a valuable service for scholars as well. I recommended the site to a teacher whose college history class was studying the Reformation and she was just amazed at the wealth of accurate historic information which cyber hymnal provided.

Hopefully, MANY people who appreciate the service rendered by cyber hymnal will take the time to let them know how grateful we are and that will encourage them in their work.

When Mudcat's domain name needs to be renewed, we can still get to Mudcat by using the IP address as a "back door." I thought I might be able to get the IP using the whois link Maeve provided.

Whois shows the IP as http://69.64.155.125/ - which is that same girl described in the first message. So, now I wonder if the IP listed by Whois is the IP for Cyberhymnal, or if it's just the IP for the girl page.

So, THAT was an idea that didn't work.

I have found similar screens occasionally when trying to link through some of my more ancient bookmarks. Sometimes googling some distinctive content (if you can remember any!) is enough to find the new location (if one exists).

Wikipedia has this article - Internet Archive which I thought might provide a way of getting at information from no-longer-extant websites. At least, that seems to be the aim of the project.

Just a thought - I know the DigiTrad has at least one occasionally-updated mirror site here:- Yet Another Digital Tradition Page but I don't believe there is any equivalent for the Mudcat Cafe itself. Could there be? Should there be?

Anyhow, the disappearance of the CyberHymnal would be a huge blow to those of us who look for hymn texts and hymn-tune midis online. With over 7000 hymn pages as well as a huge amount of sound files (midis, nwc's) and biographical infopages on just about everybody whose name ever graced an English hymnal's index of authors and composers, it will be impossible to replace near-term and hard to do long-term. With its nearest competitor, the more liturgically bent Oremus Hymnal, in wiki-under-construction mode, oy vey.

I recognise that screen. Means the domain name owner has not kept up payments to the server I think.

There was a memorial page for my daughter from her frinds in the SCA after her funueral that disappeared and was replaced by that exact same screen. The person who set up the page evidently stopped paying for it.
