Subject: RE: Josh White,Sr From: dick greenhaus Date: 12 May 02 - 10:39 PM CAMSCO has probably every Josh White recording ever made, including th new release of a LOC concert shared with the Golden Gate Quartet. Josh--particularly in his pre-1941 days--was one of the blues greats, IMO. He got more sound out of a guitar than anybody. |
Subject: RE: Josh White,Sr From: Art Thieme Date: 12 May 02 - 10:17 PM I'm listening to a fine one right now. It's a 26 track CD on SMITHSONIAN FOLKWAYS (SF CD 40081) It's called Josh White / Free And Equal Blues. One Meat Ball/In My Time Of Dying/Free & Equal Blues/No. 12 Train/Jim Crow/Landlord/Betty And Dupree (I put this on my 1998 CD as learned from Josh)/ Trouble/Beloved Comrad/Hold On/Jelly Jelly/When I Lay Down/House I Live In/Fuerher/Minute Man/Take A Gal Like You/Whatcha Gonna Do/Don't Lie Buddy/Motherless Children/No More Blues/Miustreatin' Woman/Freedon Road/Miss Otis Regrets/Careless Love/T.B. Blues/Outskirts Of Town. In the late 1950s I used to see Josh at Chicago's premier folk club, the Gate Of Horn. Later, in the 60s, old friend Guy Guilbert played bass with Josh for several years. Subject: RE: Josh White,Sr From: Mary Katherine Date: 11 May 02 - 11:20 AM You shouldn't have any trouble finding the one on Columbia-Legacy, since they have full-tilt distribution. The smaller labels are sometimes best ordered from their own websites. But yes, there are several. I own at least four and I know there are many I don't have. Mary Katherine |
Subject: RE: Josh White,Sr From: Stefan Wirz Date: 11 May 02 - 11:05 AM recently added a Josh White discography to my site (and nope - couldn't wait receiving the Elijah Wald bio I ordered a few days ago, but it'll be fun learning which faults I've made hitherto ;-) |
Subject: RE: Josh White,Sr From: Doctor John Date: 22 Jun 99 - 01:19 PM Yes there are quite a few. Document have issued lots of his early material and there are other CD's available too. Bear Family's excellent (and expensive!) CD set "Songs for Political Action" include his "Chain Gang" and "Southern Exposure" albums (very good and I'm not a particular fan of JW) as well as much else. Dr John |
