This is another girl with great pipes! - Aselin Debison

That kid got a good folk voice in the making. How refreshing it does not have the hard Classical, Broadway or Disney polish.

Thank you Sandy for posting that link.

Hayley is a Kiwi, as Open Mike says. She has several CDs out, and seems to be classically trained but includes on her CDs the sort of folksongs that non-folkies know, like Shenandoah.

She makes a nice job of Down In The River To Pray on YouTube. Obviously very influenced by the Alison Krauss version, but I find her voice a bit stronger.

All of the ladies from Celtic Woman sing quite well. Lisa Kelly is highly versatile from trad Irish, folk to show. Check out Celtic Woman.

i'd love to hear an Irish album from Judy Collins.

Jo Stafford sang many Appalachian folk songs well.

Frank

I recall seeing Hayley on TV last year, over here, during her UK tour. She seemed a level headed and intelligent young woman. I agree, she has a beautiful voice.

Oops perhaps not her best - here she's just like Charlotte Church (ugh). Hayley has a voice to die for - a brilliant singer. Hope she gets back to the style and quality of voice I heard on her earlier CD

At amazon.com, one finds that the gal has steam-dozen cds out; she has made a pile. She has recorded in Japan (an expensive import) and with a number of pop and pop classical people.
Dunno if she still pays taxes to New Zealand, but if she does, they would counter the economic downturn.

Her voice is attractive but not strong (her age 21); she will never grow up to be a Kiri Te Kanawa.

On Youtube unless it is someone actually playing I tend to ignore the whatevers and just minimize and listen ... Not we can agree that Doc Watson playing Deep river blues is something

I suppose you are right Bobert ... in a studio they can do anything. I never watched the video slide thingy just listened to the music. But there is a full orchestra there and hearing her do a live concert would be the measure. Just like the voice ... but I like Church's voice also.

Just another purdy face, oldster...

This is highly studio-ized recodring... Most voice majors could have done as well...

Ya' really have to get someone like her in a live settin' to see what she can do... I mean, there's more to just being on pitch in a studio...

But purdy, that's fur sure...

Just MO...

B~

I guess it's a matter of taste. Her voice is lovely, but it's not the way I like to hear a folk song done. I had the same problem with Charlotte Church singing "Carrickfergus". Some of my friends loved her version, but I didn't care for it. There's no denying that this girl has talent - but my preference would be for a less stilted rendition of Shenandoah.

Sure it was overdone but the talent is still there.

What about the second one with her boobs all but falling out?

Comparing this child to Paul Robeson is not fair! By the time she's 30, she will be hell on wheels.

See HAYLEY WESTENRA OFFICIAL SITE.

She's been very popular in Japan since her "Amazing Grace" was used as a TV drama theme song several years ago.

This young girl from Montreal has been wowing the locals with her singing prowess since she was 12 years old. She is now 14 and only getting better. In this clip she was 12; Nikki Yanofski.

"This little girl" sings with the other pop stars such as Andrea Bocelli, and has a few million socked away already.

She ain't no Paul Robeson (his "Shenandoah" also on yewtube).
