I recently received a photo from a friend in the UK and instigated a search to see if Malcolm was still around. So sorry to hear of his passing, he was a fine musician and an all around good person. The picture is from a concert we did in Liverpool back in 1968 or so, but I can’t figure out how to post it here.

I learnt about Bluegrass music from John Field when he lived in Cranford, Middlesex. I went to see him playing with The Malcolm Price Trio once and loved the sound of Caroi’s autoharp, so much so that I ended up getting one. I didn’t learn to play it until 2001 . I still listen to their LP The Malcolm Price Trio + One with John Field on Banjo.
Sadly I heard that John had just died, hence my return to the forum wondering if I ought to post about it but Kate has already done so.

Hi John,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. I got to know Malcolm well during the sixties up until the time he went to live in Norway. I booked him regularly into the Ballads & Blues Club in London and we spent time together socially. He was an amusing raconteur with a great spiel between numbers and certainly one of the earliest and most competent flat-pickers that we had in the UK. It was a pity we lost him to Oslo. I am pleased to know that he had still been able to continue playing for so long.
I really appreciate having known him.

I am Malcom Price's nephew and I have some very sad news .Malcom sadly passed away last Wednesday 9 th August in a hospice in Oslo he had been battling cancer for the last couple of years . A friend us his informed us that he had lived a very happy life in Oslo and was still gigging up until last year , he enjoyed cycling and he did some teaching in local colleges . Sorry to bring such sad news .

I saw the group and bought Malcombe a drink or two at the Tunbridge Wells Folk Club back in 1962/63.
I have their Decca release of 1963 and an odd LP issued by Ember Records with 4 tracks from the group.

I was searching for 'Malcolm Price' on the web and stumbled on this blog. I remember Malcolm (but not the trio) very well. I, plus a couple of friends were the organisers and residents at 'The Rovers Folk Club' in Bishop's Stortford in the very late 60s and early 70s. Malcolm was our guest artist on many occasions. At the time I used to play an 'Eko' 12-string guitar and talking to Malcolm I mentioned I wanted a better instrument. He told me he was selling his Gibson B45-12 (the one on the cover of 'Malcolm Price - His Songs and His Guitars' LP) as he wanted to raise funds to buy a ticket to the USA to try to break into the 'music scene' there. He also told me he had bought it from Keith Potger of the The Seekers. Well, I bought that box (for £100 in 1971) and I still have it today and play it regularly. Years later I got into contact with Keith Potger and he confirmed that it was the one he had used in the original recordings of The Seekers hits 'I'll Never Find Another You' & 'World of Our Own' so the guitar has a great history. If anyone has an email address for Malcolm I would like to get in touch with him again.

For those of you who may not know, Malcolm had an operation a few months back but is now out of hospital and still in Norway. Does anyone have any up to date news?

I was just listening a week or so back to a digitised copy of a tape I was given by the BBC producer at the end of a short pre recorded session of Malcolm's group up at BH.

I remember the Malcolm Price Trio well. Malcolm as Tony Bryan said - a very clean picker.
Tony and I were, along with the late Dave Verth on Banjo, the Dog End String Band!
Now that I am old enough to retire from the day job, my trusty John Bailey is out of mothballs and getting some regular use. It's been over two months and my fingers are still sore - never used to happen

Ah, Malcolm Price! What memories! I was a regular in the audience at Surbiton Assembly Rooms Folk Club from about 1962 onwards and saw Malcolm, with or without Trio, or Trio Plus One, on very many occasions. I believe it was our Master of Ceremonies, Derek Sarjeant, who referred to them one evening as The Cut Price Trio, a name which stuck. (I think they had agreed at the last minute to fill in for someone who could not make it - and for the same fee.)
Whoever Malcolm performed with, or without anyone else, you were guaranteed an evening of solid entertainment. His guitar picking was the cleanest and fastest on the scene until Doc Watson arrived (though Dr Pete Floyd in his day could come close). He sang with great earnestness, as though his lungs were running on empty. He had the look of a robin singing out on the top of a tree. Those were the days when you could sing folk songs from the Burl Ives song book without shame. On top of the singing was the patter - Malcolm would never stop talking. His introductions to his songs could run on for far longer than the song itself, and were invariably much more funny, unless it was a comic song, which could bring the house down. I would rate Malcolm's ad-lib stage patter easily on a par with Billy Connolly's. And while he was talking he was tuning or doing two or three other things at the same time, all of which were pulled into the thread somehow.
I remember that Mick North turned up with a fretted fiddle one evening. Anyone remember that? He used it for about one number to apply the appropriate notes. I've never seen one since.
If memory serves, Malcolm and the lovely Carol used to appear at the Jolly Blacksmith at Fulwell in the very early sixties. The Farriers were the resident group, with the late Dave Verth on banjo and .....? Was that John O'Flaherty? Skyport Ade Tucker? Geoff 'Winkle' Wilkes? Frank Beaseley on autoharp? Memory fades.

Saw Malcolm many times and admired his flat picking. he told me one night that I was teaching his girlfriend's son at Tulse Hill school, 1967-8

my fave was his rendition of 'Shell be Right , mate she'll be right' an aussie song.

I too attended The Bromley folk club at the S n G and it was there there I first saw Diz D, Alex Campbell, John james.

Who were the residents ? Always did Parchment Farm by Mose Allison

For future reference my next gig will be on Fri 15th June 2012 at the Friday folk club at the Liberal club in Orpington. Then in October at The Orpington Folk club at the Change of Horses.

1964 Bromley Folk Club - upstairs at the Star and Garter
Malcolm, Carol and Mick used to make regular appearances.
The Trio was wonderful live entertainment for me as a 19 year old.
They opened my eyes to sparkling flatpicking, autoharp and mandolin combined with Malcolm's lead vocals and humour.
They introduced me to Carter Family songs which were exceptional.
I still have their 'Malcolm Price Trio' (RG Jones) album which I treasure.
Memories of the Trio have stayed with me all my life.
In fact I was reminiscing with friend of mine 10 years ago in 'I wonder what happened ..?' vein.
To find this site and share memories with you guys is magic.

Just to confirm the above comment about the reason for Malcolm going down to Cornwall. The reason he gave to me also was to avoid National Service. He often talked about his time there and friendshp with potter Bernie Moss. I don't know of Michael Ross but Wizz Jones is still playing and I believe he has a new (or maybe re-issue CD) rleased recently.

Adding to my previous post,have just spoken to my friend John to tell him about this website.He's reminded me about Malcolm playing in 1960 at Jan Australs in Longlands Road, Sidcup.Australs was a mini theatre/club at which many local folk, blues players, just starting used to play.Keith Richards before his Stones days was at Sidcup art School and used to sit watching Malcolm's every note during those sessions at Australs. His autobiography Life has an interesting chapter about his life in Sidcup and its part in the beginnings of folk and country music in England.Strangely he doesnt mention malcolm but talks about Wizz Jones and Michael Ross.Does anyone know what happened to them?
He also reminded me that another reason for Malcolm and Carol hiding away in Cornwall was so that he could avoid national service whichwas   just coming to its end.After they were married they went to Europe and busked around the south of france and paris before coming back and starting the Trio with Mick.

Have just had a reunion with two friends in canterbury where i now live, Graham Hollins (now in Canada) and John Tisdell ( now in Gosport).We all grew up in Sidcup and knew Malcolm and Carol very well/Although none of us are musicians we were heavily into the music scene, mostly mainstream and modern jazz, but also used to frequent the folk clubs etc and the Roundhouse in London.I rememenber one night with malcolm and Carol when we went to see Rambling jack Elliott, I was living in a flat in chelsea at the time and after a pretty heavy nights drinking they all came back to the flat and slept the night on the floor.
We knew them before they got married. Malcolm and Carol ran away to Cornwall as she was under age at the time .John and Graham went down to see them in Charlestown where they eventually got married after Carols 16th birthday. The trio with Mick North were brilliant and at the time many people tried, to get them to go more commercial (add a drummer)asthey thought they could have been bigger than the Rolling stones, but malcolm remained true to his roots.
If anybody speaks to malcolm will they please pass on our best wishes, and it would be great to hear from him.
I,ll have to try to see Mick as he is now in West malling .

As to the MALCOLM PRICE TRIO we have some of the trio's promotional photos on our FB pages along with other early major British bluegrass performers . Malcolm was a true pioneer over here with his fine playing and in real terms, a lot of us bluegrass `musos` back then had learnt a thing or two from him. Carol and Mick ,were gems in their own right too.

Funny! I was just thinking about Malcolm, his guitat picking and very funny repartee. I remember the Trio ( Mick North left handed mandolin player). I have an LP of the Malcolm Price Trio which I am about to back up to CD. You're on that album John. Malcolm was very instrumental in keeping 'The Southern Ramblers' together in their early stages. He got us a banjo player when we were badly let down. Whenever Malcolm and the Ramblers were on 'Country Meets Folk' at the same time. We'd get together and play an unrehearsed version of 'Sunny Side of Life', much to the delight of Wally Whyton, but it did give the production team a few worries!!! By the way our autoharp player, David Jones, bought Carol's autoharp when the Trio broke up. He still has it, and plays it. Helives in Sussex and still plays Old Time and Bluegrass music. Anyone got the words to Malcolm's Archibald Arsolebrook?

As I posted above, Malcolm Price currently resides as he has done for about 35 years in Norway. I don't think he plays any more

Cedric Thorose is still in London and plays regularly at a Monday evening pub session in North London. He is playing and building resonator guitars and does an excellent job at both. He also builds excellent mandolins one of his daughters is red hot on the mandolin and fiddle.

I have seen and heard them both on several occasions recently.
Clips on You Tube do not do them justice.

Ced was with the Southern Ramblers and did certainly know Malcolm.

I remember Malcolm sometimes using using a Martin 12 string - he played an awesome version of Ella Speed on it! His rendition of the Burglar Man was great and the All Go Hungry Hash House was pretty good too.

I don't think I ever saw Cedric Thorose with Malcolm Price but, if I remember rightly, he was in the Southern Ramblers.

I remember Malcolm Price very well, he often appeared at Chislehurst Folk club and I can still play a couple of numbers in his distinctive style. He usually appeared with a couple of Martin guitars, a six and a twelve string, and I think he used a special tuning for the twelve ~ but time makes memory slow. Whatever, I went out and bought a brand new 12 string jumbo just like Malcs and still have it, but only play it now and again as it seems so big, cumbersom and 'dead' compared with the flamenco guitar I normally use. Malcolm used to do a good comic number called "The Burglar Man" and his runs on "buffalo Skinners' were fantastic. Really a one man show whoever he was performing with, as I recall he had a liking for fawn whipcord trousers, western cut shirts and cowboy boots. Where is he now? No idea, but I do still have the recordings to remember him by. I also recall Cedric Thorose, I believe that they sometimes worked together but I may be imagining this. The folk movement was very solid in the 60s and everybody seemed to be friendly and encouraging. Great days ~ must be getting old, but the fingers still work! Ken

Malcolm Price. The master of wonderfully controlled, tasteful flatpicking. He was very, very funny too. I was at that gig with Doc Watson at Guildford. It was probably in 1965 on Doc Watson's first UK tour. Ralph Rinzler - part of the Greenbriar Boys- was playing mandolin with Doc. Malcolm Price, along with Roger Churchyard (fiddle), John Field (banjo) and Ian McCann (guitar) were doing the support. They were amazing - the best I ever saw them perform.
Although it was all such a long time ago I've never forgotten that gig. Guildford Folk club was very much a traditional club at the time and to end the evening, they got one of their floor singers- Tom Dillon, to do an unaccompanied song. The contrast was stark and I didn't quite know what to make of it. In retrospect, I think it was a great idea.

I have only just stumbled across this site.Malcolm is my uncle and yes you are correct he does live in Norway.I am so sorry to hear about Carol.As a boy I can clearly remember them practicing in his bedroom at my Nan and Grandads ( Malcolms Mum and Dad) as they lived there together for a brief period.The address was 95 Cray Road,Foots Cray,Sidcup,Kent,why I know this so well is because I lived across the road at 6 Orchard Villas.The last time I saw Malcolm was in 1972 at his fathers funeral.On a lighter note I can remember him having a wicked sense of humour.I believe his sister who is 84 years old still keeps in contact with him.

I remember booking Malcolm to play at the Sloop Inn on the Isle of Wight in the 60'S as a solo artist. He did a great job with his Martin guitar...wish I could get hold of the l/p i once had..anyway Malcolm ,good luck to you where ever you are.

Malcolm was a friend of my dad's and his cousin in the late sixties. My dad knew him through Pete Custer? at a folk club in Rake, Hampshire. My dad and his cousin played at the same club. They lost touch but Malcolm tried to contact my dad again after my dad married my mum but to no avail. He gave a guitar to my dad's cousin as a present plus each of them a copy of Malcolm Price: His Songs and His Guitar. Would love to know how to contact him. Jane

Hi There guys,

Carol was my auntie. My dads sister. She passed away a few years ago in Spain, having moved there upon being diagnosed with MS.

I believe she was in her 60's. I am significantly younger and thus didn't have much opportunity to appreciate the wonderful stories she had to tell about meeting Donovan, The Beatles, Tom Jones, The Who etc etc when she was alive, though the few times I did was a really special.

I like to think that I am carrying on the family tradition of being a folk musician myself (www.myspace.com/joethefox)

My dad and I often listen through the couple of LPs that we have.

John and/or Tug, one question did either of you know or know of a guy called Alf (or Alfie) Martin - a teacher at Wm. Penn School down Catford or thereabouts in 1960s. He was into the CND very heavily also ??

Had my 27 year old daughter over for xmas and one of the things that she was trying to find in the house was a Malcolm Price LP. Not born until '81 but still a fan of Malcolms!! The record that she was after was 'His Songs and His Guitars' from '69. Contains crackers like Buffalo Skinners, Nine Hundred Miles, Old Go Hungry Hash House, Price's 12 String Rag and Black Snake Moan. Having now found it will have to do something about getting it over to her in one form or another!

Yep...I remember the Coal Creeks well....still have their card. In reply to Vic Smith, I think that the Orange Blossom Sound were formed after the second M.Price quartet, but I'm not sure of the date. Still in regular contact with Ian McCann, so I'll ask him.

We once booked Malcolm at one of our Edenbridge "Sing and Play" venues
and when he entered the club there was a group singing, comprising three members of the S.E. constabulary. When I told him they were "the Old Bill" the look on his face was something to behold!

Being ever so "slightly" younger than many of the posters here my main memory of Malcolm was as a fine solo performer at the Enterprise, Chalk Farm. I knew of the trio by name bt not sure if I ever saw them.

Long hours & days at sea off Aden in 1967 were made more bearable by endlessly playing a MPT record----I think "Long Black Veil" was on it, and my favourite track was something like "That's When I Miss You More " .....great flat-picking and nice banjo-break ! Trouble was, no-one else in the mess liked bluegrass,so I had to pick my times carefully ,or risk being thrown over the side (along with record ).!

John from Elsie's Band....thanks. The cover pic. for "Way Down Town" was taken in Nov. 1964 in the "Prospect of Whitby" pub in Wapping, London. That banjo on the table is the one I used then...I still have it, and it is sitting in its stand behind the computer as I write this.....

The trio made 2 LP's for Decca. "Country Session" Decca LK4627 released in 1964 with Malcolm, Carol and Mick...I think this album was recorded by R.G.Jones in Morden.   The 2nd was Decca LK4665 "Way Down Town", recorded at the Decca West Hampstead studios in Oct. 1964, with yours truly added on banjo. This 2nd. album was released in 1965.
Malcolm also made several albums later on other labels, as both a solo artist and with other guest musicians. I'm not sure of his total output. To my mind, the recording that best captured the sound of the original trio was that made at a live performance in the Mayfair Hotel in Oct. 1963 and issued on Ember ep's.

We regularly booked Malcolm at Catford, Beckenham, Marsh Green (nr.Edenbridge) from 1963/64 onwards. I have a vinyl LP with the line up as described by John Field but with Carole on autoharp instead of Ian McCann. He was also the presenter for us ("Four Square Circle") whe we used to do the BBC programme, "Country Meets Folk". The first time I ever saw him play flat pick I couldn`t believe a person could be so clean and accurate with an instrument.

John MacKenzie has posted a great photo of the original trio at Surbiton Folk Club in early 1963. Malcolm had a D28 Martin, Carole a late Victorian Muller autoharp, and Mick played a 1930's Gibson A75 mandolin. All three of them sang. There was nothing quite like them on the scene at that time......

I recall them from TV in the 1960's ....ITV (I think!) "Hootenanny"!...When he introduced a song, it was in the style of Max Miller.

The trio were regular guests at the Jug O'Punch folk club run by the Campbells in Birmingham in the 60's and 70's. Malcolm, along with Red Sullivan and Martin Windsor introduced Brummies to "Lahndan" humour! Malcolm was a great picker and the only one I saw at the Jug who could outpick him was Doc Watson.

Malcom presently lives in Norway where he has been for a number of years. I don't believe he performs any longer. He and also the trio when they were still together used to appear regularly at the Ballads & Blues Club in London's west end in the sixties. I knew him very well up until the time he went off to live in Norway in the early seventies I believe it was. Fionna Duncan also appeared with him for a short spell.
I too have the EP of the trio and three of his vinyl albums plus a tape of a broadcast that they did for the BBC which the show's producer gave to me. He was certainly about the best flat picking guitar player that we had in England at the time and had some very amusing between songs patter.
Money, Marbles and Chalk was another song that he introduced me to.
We could certainly use someone like him on today's scene.

I think it was Malcolm Price who introduced 'Long Black Veil' to British audiences. As John Fields says, he was very much a flat picking, American country style guitarist.

They were residents at Surbiton Folk Club (at the Oak and the Assembly Rooms)along with Lisa Turner and of course Derek Sarjeant.

Somewhere, tucked away, I have an EP of Derek backed by them.

Later, in 65/66 Malcolm used to do occasional 'guest' spots at the club. Good banjo player if I recall, and a bit of an afficionado of bluegrass - at a time when it was regularly heard in folk clubs.

I remember the name Malcolm Price and know I must have seen him on a number of occasions as I can visualise his name written in the diary in purple felt tip (as you did in the 60s). But I have absolutely no recollection of seeing him perform or of what he did.

Anyone remember Malcolm and Carol Price with Mick North...the original Malcolm Price Trio ? I believe they formed around 1961, and the first time I saw them was in 1963 at the Reading Folk Club. I was lucky enough to join them in March 1964 for a year on banjo. I'd like to hear any memories anyone has........
