Lady of Spain
words by Errell Reaves
Music by Tolchard Evans
©1931 and 1959 by Peter Maurice Music, London

Night in Madrid, blue and tender
Spanish moon makes silver splendor
Music throbbing plaintive sobbing notes of a guitar
While ardent caballero serenades:

Lady of Spain, I adore you
Right from the night I first saw you,
My heart has been yearning for you;
What else could any heart do?

Lady of Spain, I'm appealing,
Why should my lips be concealing
All that my eyes are revealing?
Lady of Spain, I love you.

Brings tears to my eyes, every time I play it on the accordion. I didn't know the words.

Gee, I never saw the original before:
Lady of Spain, I adore you
Pull down your pants, I'll explore you...

This posting reminds me of the fairly recent dramatic adaptation of one of Scotland's classic novels of farming life - Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon. In the story the 'sunset song' is Spanish Ladies, the shanty. However, the thicko thespians instead used the above song!
There ought to be a bureau you can complain to about misuse of songs!

Maybe it's the hour,
Maybe it's the typeface on my browser
but looked at the thread header, and read
"Lady of Spam"

My mother used to play "Lady of Spain" on her big 140 bass Dallape accordion. Other than that, I thought the world of her.

I couldn't help myself. I found a MIDI and added it. I've come across too many accordion players who don't know this song. Seems to me the tradition is slipping, if that's allowed to happen.

I grew up in Milwaukee, so this song is very important to me. In the cold winter months, this song helpes us thing of a warm, sunny place where the girls didn't wear babushkas.

You know the same version as me Susan -

....Lift up your vest
I'll do the rest.
Lady of Spain I love you.

What I recall was:
"Lady of Spain, I adore you,
Lady of Spain, you old whore, you...."

Mebbe we can assemble a more-or-less complete parody from failing memories.

My recollection from childhood is very similar to Susan's

"Lady of Spain I adore you,
Lift up your skirt I'll explore you"

That might be the first "bawdy song" I ever learned. I don't remenmber ever hearing any verses however.

For some strange reason, I read the title as Lady of Spam. That would be an interesting song.

I'd forgot this old jewel. Joe started this based on my favorite accordion joke and claimed as you see that he knew accordion players who did NOT know this song.......which is complete bullshit. Most accordion players know only two songs. One is "Lady of Spain" and the other one isn't.

Seems like I recall a joke on TV years ago, when someone would play an instrument with the greatest expertise, then one person on the show would say something like wasn't that the greatest player & the comic would answer, "Yes, but can he play Lady of Spain." I seem to recall this happening on the show often. Or maybe it was on several shows? Does anyone remember what show & who the comic was?

Is Our Lady of Spain the patron Saint of accordion players?
