Are Glasgow Rangers fans bigoted the Irish? The consensus seems to be that they are and The Famine Song all but confirms it. But look at it from the Rangers' point of view. They are faced by Celtic fans waiving Irish flags, declaring their Irishness, and chanting IRA slogans. It is almost as if Celtic fans are baiting the Scots. If you wind up a people long enough, they will snap and they will sings songs like The Famine Song.

The oddity is that these Celtic fans are often 3rd, 4th, 6th or even 7th generation Scotsmen. Surely, if you are born in Scotland, then you are Scots. Okay, if you are 2nd generation, leeway maybe given, but how many generations have to pass by before these people admit to what they are –Scotsmen. Instead, by hanging on to their Irishness, they are encouraging sectarianism.

What do others think?

The opening sentence should read: Are Glasgow Rangers fans bigoted against the Irish?

Sorry.

This subject has been done to death on here, and I can see no point in discussing it again.
I will say this though
"The oddity is that these Celtic fans are often 3rd, 4th, 6th or even 7th generation Scotsmen
People of similar descent helped finance the IRA in 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland. So the folk memory is a long one, and is not always benign.

Are Glasgow Rangers bigoted? probably

Are Celtic supporters bigotted? Well I have worked with a fine upstanding pillar of our community, a JP no less. And a Football referee. And a commited christian (RC of course). And he wears a lot of green.

His jokes on the subject refer to the "Forces of Darkness" - Ranger of course.
He thinks it humourus to pose in front of a banner in a New York republican club, that bears a sentiment (in Gelic) to the effect glorifying the IRA. And he is just from Glasga.

Bigotted? - there is a lot of it about.

Football rather focusses it like a lens. Us and them. Tribal loyalty.

Are Irish people thick?

Are black people dangerous?

Are polish people heavy drinkers?

Are Africans unable to govern themselves .....

.... Is any attempt to generalize about anyone worthy of being spat on in a moment of naive distraction?

I don't think so.

Whoever changed the title of this thread, seems to have forgotten two things.
1 It's a Protestant v Catholic thing
2 Ireland is not a wholly Roman Catholic country, even if you count it as 2 parts.

Glasgow Celtic was started as a team for Roman Catholic boys, and for many years no protestant ever played in the team.
The adoption of the Irish Tricolour, and the singing of Anti British songs, is a recent development in their long history.

But many of those who aren't Catlick would describe themselves as Brutish (stet).

Many - but not all - especially in the south - and there are plenty of Irish Protestants in the south who are happy and suffer no form of discrimination whatsoever.

Liverpool and Everton have a similarly tormented geneology but they seem to be getting over it - finally.
