Subject: Kent - info on clubs, sessions, etc.
From: Will Fly

I'm ploughing on with my "four counties" project of listing all actual and current venues for folk clubs, singarounds, sessions, etc. in the Sussex/Kent/Hampshire/Surrey cluster.

The latest draft pages are on Kent and can be seen here.

Kent 'Catters to the fore! There is a lot of misleading, conflicting and outdated info out there on the net. If you have information which you know from your own experience to be worth including, or correcting, please let me know, either here or by email (address at the foot of the pages). Please don't quote other links to me unless you know they're accurate, as many of the web links cited are wrong.

Many thanks.

You need

Orpington Friday Folk - pm Sue Tuckey, here, she runs it.

Rochester - Good Intent - pm Growler here, he runs it

Maidstone - Greyhound - pm Growler, he doesn't go there any more but knows more about it than I do.

Maidtone - can't remember the name of the pub, pm Don Wyziwig Thompson or the Wild Rover here - both are involved in it.

Rainham - Old timey session at the Oast, I'll pm you the email address of Graham who runs it.

Also Rainham - Moore or Less club and the Maz and Dan Hobday club - you can get details from the Oast people I am sure.

Sheppey - defintely a club there, run by Paul ??? but I have not got his email - John Barden or Growler may be able to help.

Looks like you have made a good beginning Will.

Think RB put in links that did not work perhaps he has pm'd to already.

Anyway on Mudcat

Sue Tuckey = Girl Friday - search forum with "Orpington" or "Tone Deaf Leopard" I think she does Fox & Hounds too.

You will probably find these two on the above threads as well
John Barden = The Barden of England
Don Thompson = Don(Wyziwyg)T

There is a Kent Folk site which will have some info, though I don't know how current it is. http://www.kentfolk.com/folk-clubs/KentFolk_Folk-Club_list.html

Any chance of getting Essex added to your site? Anyway, best wishes and much success to this project.

Thanks RB and Tam. Have checked Will's site, and he has some facts wrong, Fox And Hounds Knatts Valley is weekly on Mondays. Orpington Thursday is weekly not monthly and, as you say he has not got Orpington Friday Folk. Will pm you. Will Fly

Here are two for the singarounds list:

Greyhound Folk Night. 2nd and 4th Mondays. Greyhound, Wheeler St., Maidstone, ME14 1UB. Details: 01622-754032.

Open House Acoustic Music Club. 1st, 3rd and 5th Mondays. The Pilot, Stone St., Maidstone, ME15 6EU. Details: 01622-691192.

Also, the word on the street is that Paul Stark/Wheeler Street are soon to start something at The Old House at Home in Maidstone on Thursday nights. Watch this space!

Add into the singaround mix:-

"BULLSESSIONS!"

Takes place at the Bull public house in Snodland, fourth Tuesday each month, 8.00pm - 11.00pm

In spite of the name, this is a singaround, and all are welcomed with open arms.

There are about fifteen - twenty regulars, and room for more.

Don T.

Thanks for the info, folks - I've made appropriate corrections and will add updates as I get more (hard) information from contacts.

I do appreciate the feedback - can't promise to do Essex just yet though! Hampshire's next in line...

CURRENT Deal Folk club website

Oh, and have you contacted Doug Hudson? He has a finger in every folking pie in Kent...

It looks as if Adrian O is starting a new venue in Broadstairs, you can probably PM DrSyn here (Bob Kenward) for more info on hat and the Wrotham Arms.

I think there may be a new thing at the Fordwich Arms - lovely venue - off to check...

Back Soon!

Probably current Fordwich Arms website

The website gives contact details for the pub and it mentions the Sunday sessions.

I haven't actually found anything in Canterbury yet, which seems surprising.

Has anyone an email address for Bob and Kath Drage? ince tehyrun the local folk music listings mag they would be sensibe to contact.

Likewise Alan Castle who runs Tenterden Folk Day.

The Travellers' Rest Club (as indicated above) is definitely still running. You can add that to your listings with confidence, Will!

Will,

There's a regular singaround, last Thursday in every month, at The High Brooms Tavern, Tunbridge Wells, 8pm-closing time (loosely around 11pm!).

Mixture of unaccompanied/ accompanied and trad folk/ more contemporary songs.

Worth a visit to the High Brooms Tavern just to see the ceiling furniture. One of the lampshades in the back room (where the sessions are) is an inverted kayak with the lamp hanging through the bum-hole! There are ships' figureheads, breeches buoys, surveying staffs, old harrows, rams skulls and all manner of esoteric stuff all over the walls and ceilings.

Oh, BTW, address for the HBT is:

High Brooms Tavern
102 High Brooms Road,
High Brooms,
Tunbridge Wells
TN4 9BQ
01892 528543
I don't think Ron (Landlord) has any concept of email or internet! Still, he manages to make his guitar sound OK, even though it is mostly held together with Gaffer Tape!

Good one! Thanks for the info, ROB - I'll update my folk links pages. Might get along to the 29th April singaround - not sure yet as Alan Day and I are planning an assault on the Ram Club on the 30th...

Be good to see you there if you can make it, Will...a good warm-up for the Ram Club? Though I was planning to sing an unaccompanied song that night, so it may be better to stay away :-)

Here are another two I didn't notice:

2nd Monday of every month-

1 County Road
Maidstone ME14 1UY
01622 751 264

4th Monday of the month-

10 Pudding Lane
Maidstone, Kent ME14 1LN
01622 752 363

Please note that the Greyhound has been closed down, and so these two sessions are an alternative for that, although everyone is welcome. It might also be worth making a note of the fact they're one of the only sessions/singarounds I've been to where there are a mixture of ages, from 16-60+.

If I haven't already mentioned it - Fox And Hounds is no longer on.
We decamped to The Foresters, 235 High Street Wilmington. It is now a joiny in jammy singaround event, with no guest bookings.
