Subject: Tech: Switching to google mail
From: kendall

Ok folks, I've tried everything I know and nothing works. Yahoo has become such a pain in the ass that I want to switch to google e mail and have it as my only e mail address. So,
How do I get rid of yahoo and it's full screen page?

I can access google, and I can use it, but it takes a few steps to do it. I want it to replace Yahoo completely.

You have to be "invited" in by a current member. PM me with your email address and I'll gladly do the honours. I do prefer it to Yahell.

Actually you have to email my Gmail account (I assume that's the one you mean) which is my full name as shown above, no spaces or dots, {a t} g m a i l {d o t} {c o m}

I don't think you need to be invited any more, you can just set it up. You'll find it on this page, and if you also download and install the Google Toolbar then you'll have an icon on the top of your browser to show you if you have email. I've also used the iGoogle settings to customize my home page with my favorite links, etc.

http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/

I think once you have your gmail account set up you can go back to your Yahoo account and set it to forward all mail to your new Gmail account. I've found Gmail to be a lifesaver as I switch away from the earthlink mail I've used for years.

In googlemail you need to go into 'settings' and then 'account' and make googlemail your default email.
You can then use and access emails from both accounts but you will get the gmail screen.

as above +

once gmail is your default you can then delete yahoo if you don't want to keep both.

I signed up for gmail, imported all my addresses, and tried to send mail. It told me something like "not recognized".

Kendall, what exactly do you have against yahoo mail?

It keeps hanging up, failing to send my e mails, and I keep getting error messages that claim the problem is temporary. The last time I got that it was still temporary two days later. It's now three days and it still wont send. I dumped it, and I'm now using gmail.

Now, I need to know how to get rid of yahoo altogether.

I think yahoo will delete your account if there is INactivity for a certain amount of time, regardless.

Yahoo "hangs" in some of the browsers worse than in others, especially if you have blocked cookies. You might try Mozilla Firefox or Opera. They seem to handle it better than IE.

Ages ago I found the same kind of problem wit AOL. I changed e-mail & tried to switch to a different engine. Switching wasn't a problem but wiping out AOL was difficult. It was entrenched in my computer & hidden in the nooks & crannies. I don't know how we got rid of it but I kept deleting AOL in the properties every time I came accross it. Good luck with the new e-mail.
We just got a notice that our Verizon will be switched over to something else & that will have new addresses, What a pain for someone like me who they say they'll walk me through the process. Will they come to the house to do it cause it won't be just a walk in the park for the likes of me. They're telling me to do things that I don't even know what the words mean or refere to. Pains.

Barry

My brother is totally inept when it comes to such things. HE just spent three days with PeoplePC trying to figure out why he couldn't get connected to them for his email, etc. when he could get onto google, etc. He has downloaded their stuff several times and it still isn't working right. I think I'm going to have to go over there and help it nad I don't understand half of it, either!:-)

Kendall, sorry I meant I think yahoo deletes your account if there is NO activity after a certain amount of time. I've had several yahoo accts. for years and had no problems, but I prefer gmail.

While we're on the subject (I mentioned this in a previous thread but it's relevant here), what I hate is Yahoo Mail's infuriating habit of making their banner adverts swoop down over my command buttons and emails (even as I'm trying to read them) so the message is not visible and becomes unusable. The blasted advert then just sits there over my work until I either wait it out or click it to make it F off (which seems to encourage it to occur more frequently and releases God-knows-what cookie monsters). Yahoo's violation and force-occupation of my personal zone just so they can sell something finally drove me out. Even Flashblock isn't always effective.

I wonder when they'll cotton on to the fact that intrusive advertising gives the product a nasty association in people's minds and alienates them. I alienated my way on over to Gmail where I'm much happier. I've signed out of Yahoo and plan to stay signed out. So there. That'll fix 'em.

I never use Yahoo. I have always stayed clear.

Google Chrome, so I am led to beleive will be more hazardous than IE.

Suggestion, just like Yahoo, stay well clear.

SRS - you say that if you have googlemail and the google toolbar you get an icon that tells you when you have email.

I have googlemail and the toolbar but not an icon that does this. I have an icon to click which takes me directly to gmail, but it does warn me when I have mail.

I only installed gmail today so I may be missing something really obvious.

Could you put me out of my misery please?

Cheers.

Open the Google Toolbar options (probably reached via a button on the far right if you don't have it displayed on the toolbar--Gmail is a "custom button") and be sure you have selected the mail icon to appear on the toolbar. If you have new mail the envelope is "open" and there is a down arrow next to that icon. If you mouse over or click ON THAT ARROW it will display your mail in a drop down menu and you can go to whichever one you want to open directly, or simply open the mail page. It won't start doing the open envelope thing until you get new mail in the account.

Hope that helps.

Bonnie, I am not sure what you mean re' the adverts. When I am reading my yahoo email I don't have any ads except at the top. As I scroll down for the mail, they seem fairly innocuous. I can't remember if you are on this side of the pond or the UK. Maybe it's different because of location?

Lucky you! I'm in Ireland (though I have Yahoo.com and not Yahoo.ie, if that makes any difference). But the advertisers are American - Proctor & Gamble is the worst offender - not European, some (not all) the ads do expand and roll down over my emails or inbox contents or whatever I'm trying to look at, and then sit there and block them out. (Maybe my wildest paranoia is actually true: maybe they really are out to get me . . . )

Yahoo mail doesn't work if you don't accept cookies, but there may be some ways to suppress the pop-up type from taking over the screen. Yahoo wants to run ads so they won't let the mail program even load if your settings are incorrect, but they may not be able to get past something like the IE or Google pop-up blocker.

Dunno - I use Firefox and Safari on a Mac, and only Firefox on a PC running XP. I have all the browsers set to accept cookies and block pop-ups but nothing touches this. (Maybe the fact that it's not actually a pop-up but a "roll-down" - i.e. an expansion from an existing portion of the page rather than a separate little window - makes a difference?) I use Firefox's Flashblock which often works, but not always. I'm experiencing no other problems of any kind (at least not ones that I can blame on my computer) and one machine is an Apple which is less susceptible to malware, so I don't think it's that. I have the usual artillery of AV, firewalls etc.

Anyway, I now use Gmail for my main account, and one thing I vow I will never never never never ever buy is bloody $%^*"*£!!!&*£$! Pampers.

The other annoying thing about this is that it's intermittent - frequent, but unpredictable; so I would find myself in the mentally-stressful will-it-won't-it? situation of trying to race through and beat it to the draw. (The fury and astronomical blood pressure is pretty stressful too.)

SRS -

thanks - I think was expecting too much - the one and only thing I like about AOL, my current e-mail, is that it shouts and tells me as soon as an email comes in and i was hoping for something similar here without having to refresh anything. In every other respect I hate AOL and want rid of it, hence my interest in Gmail.

Thanks,

It seems that on gmail you can download an addition that puts an icon at the bottom of the screen a which makes a noise to alert you to incoming e-mail as it arrives.

This means I can tell AOL to go to hell.

The year is starting well!

Cheers,

A very happy nectary weasel!

If you downloaded the program Pegasus to keep your email resident on your computer you can set it up so the horse flaps its wings when you get mail. :)

Bonnie - I too have a yahoo.com mail account though I am in UK. I have NEVER had an ad get in the way of reading any of my mail.

Out of interest are you on Yahoo Classic or the new version? You might try changing to Yahoo Classic and see if that is better. It's up the top near Sign Out - What's New - Yahoo Classic. I have one thin banner advert which goes across the top of the page above the email and bothers me not a jot

I have had my Yahoo account for years (in fact I have lots of them) and have never had any problems at all with them.

Cheers folks, that sounds promising. I'm not actually sure which Yahoo version mine is (going to go check shortly) but I think they tend to default you to the upgrades if you don't tell them otherwise, so I'll try that. Good idea, thanks -
