Perhaps it is the song recorded by Cecil Surratt and his West Virginia Ramblers on the Rich-R-Tone label in 1953. It is the flip side of "Bright Crystal Sea" on the 78 RPM record.

Glad you found it, Becky!

Subject: Lyr Req: WHAT WILL YOUR ANSWER BE (T S Teddlie)
From: Nathan in Texas
Date: 30 Dec 08 - 10:25 PM

Not quite it, but your lines reminded me of this one we used to sing in the churches I grew up in.

"What Will Your Answer Be?"
by Tillit S. Teddlie, 1935

Someday you'll stand at the bar on high,
Someday your record you'll see;
Someday you'll answer the question of life,
What will your answer be?

Chorus:
What will it be? What will it be?
Where will you spend your eternity?
What will it be? Oh, what will it be?
What will your answer be?

Sadly you'll stand if you're unprepared
Trembling, you'll fall on your knee;
Facing the sentence of life or of death,
What will your sentence be?

Now is the time to prepare, my friend,
Make your soul spotless and free;
Washed in the blood of the Crucified One,
He will your answer be.

+ Thanks Melissa. I'll do a search for the name. It must have been on a vinyl I owned or had from the Berkeley Public Library, and I'm sure I'd recognized the name of the band, but I don't think I've ever heard of the Louvin Bros until now.

Thanks for your quik response! I just posted a few minutes ago.

+ In days of old I used to listen to and sing a good deal of American folk music, and I might do so again in days to come.

In those days I knew a song with a refrain that went like this:

   Where would you spend eternity
   If death should call you today?
   Are you ready to go home?
   O where would you spend eternity?

Then it went:

   O my brother, if death should call today,
   Where would you spend eternity ...

And so on. But memory fails ... memorie ... fails, fails ...

I thought it was by the Blue Sky Boys, but appently it's not.

Can anyone post the lyrics to this song and tell me who recorded it?

Herman, monk
