Burl Ives also recorded "Tibby Dunbar", but I doubt the tune he sang is the one you're after--rather tepid and music-hall Irish (to my mind).

Hi Fergus, me oul flower,
One of the tunes you mentioned there was "Tibby Dunbar". I have the Dubliners singing it and the air is the same as Barry Gleeson used for "The Macs and the Os". Will I see in Howth on Thursday?

Ah Martin me auld segotia.

Happy New Year to you and Josephine.
I have 'An Rogaire Dubh' on Lorcan MacMathuna CD and I have tried to fit the air to 'The Glass of Whiskey' but it's a bit of a shoehorn job. I'll persist for a while and see if it will settle in.

Fergus

Hi Fergus

"The Black Rogue" or "An Rogaire Dubh" is a well known jig. Havent time to hunt for an MP3 now - ask O'Farachain or any fiddle-playing Goilin-type to hum it for you!

Regards

Hi Malcolm

I found the song 'The Glass of Whisky' in the National Library here in Dublin in a Publication from 1793 called 'The Sentimental and Masonic Magazine'.
The Lyrics were reprinted in a number of later publications including the one you referred to that begins: 'At the side of the road, near the bridge of Drumcondra', in Thomas Crofton Croker, The popular songs of Ireland (London: H Colburn, 1839).
With the help of Jerry O'Reilly from the Góílín Club in Dublin I found that the air known as 'the Bould Thady Quill' suited the song well and it is to this air that I sing the song. However a friend of mine that was taken by the song, has expressed a desire to hear the original air that the composer had in mind and it is this that has promped me to endeavour to track down the original air.

Fergus

What is the song called, and where did you find it?

See Song LV, 'Paddy O'Rourke, or The Pig Under the Pot' (beginning 'When I was a young man in sweet Tipperary'; no music given) in Ashburner's new vocal and poetic repository (Ulverston: George Ashburner, 1807) 126-130
http://books.google.com/books?id=IbQDAAAAQAAJ

To the tune 'When I was a young man in sweet Tipperary' is a short piece, 'At the side of the road, near the bridge of Drumcondra' (music not given), in Thomas Crofton Croker, The popular songs of Ireland (London: H Colburn, 1839) page 81.
http://www.archive.org/details/popsongsireland00crocrich

Another song called 'Paddy [or Billy] O'Rourke [or Rooke]' beginning 'I greased my brogues and cut my stick' is number 2101 in the Roud Folk Song Index. Various broadside editions can be seen at  Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads.

Two tunes called 'Billy O'Rourke's' can be seen at The Fiddler's Companion:
http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/BILL_BINS.htm#BILLY_O%27ROURKE%27S_JIG_[1]
Follow the cross-references for further cross-references: As a compendium uncritically compiled, some of the information at that site is misleading or wrong, so don't take any of it for granted. Always cross-check. All the tunes given may or may not be sufficiently similar to be considered related, but presumably the one you want will be an example from Ireland, the earlier the better if 1783 is correct. The entry for 'Johnny McGill' (Burns used it for his song 'Tibbie Dunbar'; the tune may originally be Scots) may prove useful:
http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/JOHNN_JOHNS.htm#JOHNNY/JOHNNIE_McGILL/MACGILL

Tunes at FC are in abc format, convenient for posting in the Forum and easily convertible to midi if eventually selected for inclusion in the DT. 'Tibbie Dunbar' is already in the DT, of course, with a midi, though no source for the latter is named.

For further titles and references, see the late Bruce Olson's website:

http://www.csufresno.edu/folklore/Olson/IRTITLE3.HTM (under 'Blarney Castle')

A wide range of tunes in abc and midi formats can be found via http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/tunefind

Hi all

Found a great song dated 1793 that is sung to the air of a jig called: 'When I was a Young Man in Sweet Tipperary'. Further research suggests that the jig is also known as:
'Paddy O'Rourkes',
'Before I Was Married'
'Billy O'Rourke's Jig'
'The Black Rogue'
'Come Under My Plaidie'
'Johnny McGill'
'Tibbie Dunbar'

Anybody got a midi or simular for any of these, or know where I can find one? When I track down the music I will add the lyrics and the air to the DT

Kind regards

Fergus
