News of a new date on the Festival calendar for this year. Fits in neatly between Sidmouth and Shrewsbury( but clashes with Whitby unfortunately).

Is this anything to do with the National Forest Festival which ran in June? A re-branding maybe? Nothing on the club website yet, so maybe a new venture in competiton?!

I was thinking the same thing Graham although National Forest have been using Conkers nr Ashby de la Zouch for their festival for the last couple of years I believe?

"National Forest" is a different festival and will, I'm assuming, be run by Mike and Nina as usual in 2009. Normally at start of July as I remember and run at "Conkers".

I thought Moira Furnace was in Leicestershire even though it has a DE post code. Leicestershire County Council think it is.

Moira is very close to the Leics/Derby border, just a few miles north of Ashby de la Zouche.

Ceilidh Fri night - the overview doesn't seem to mention it, the programme does.

A lot of dancers will have been at Towersey and going to Sidmouth, hope there are enough left for Moira.

Hmmm...don't know what happened to the message I posted on this thread yesterday.

I should have been on here before but here I am now.

Yes, I am involved in running the festival. No it has nothing at all to do with the National Forest Festival.

I've been put in charge of sessions and sigarounds and will also be running the Ashby de la Zouch Folk Club in the furnace itself on the Friday evening. I'm hoping we will be able to have sessions in both of the two closest pubs (The Railway and the Woodsman)

My Guru and AlanWW are both on the bill.

Anything anyone would like to do?

We've already said we'll do some stewarding and Dave Johns has also asked uo to play at the festival, but we could possibly squeeze in running a session as well, depending on timings.

Ok, my thoughts so far are:
We have two nearby pubs who are happy to have something going on. I have yet to talk to the landlords properly but I thought possibly two music sessions, a fast and slower one, in there. Then we have "The loft" which has brilliant accoustics and, if the weather is good, the possibility of opening the door and using the bridge over the canal as well. On Friday evening we're having the "Ashby de la Zouch Folk Club" and I'd like a "Big Sing" on Sunday morning. The rest of the time I thought of a shanty session, a "King Coal and the Cut" session with mining and canal songs, Middle Bar Sing, Mudgather......anything else? The loft is probably available all the time so we could have continuous sessions of one kind or another in there. Could possibly put the Mudgather in the pub....I must talk to the landlords this week and see what THEY want and what accomodation there is for singing and playing.

So..what do you think?

Hah! The first thing Shady said when I mentioned Mudgather was "Chocolate!".

Hils, thanks for offering, I had hoped you would run the Mudgather.

Moira Furnace is an old blast furnace (don't know a lot about that side as I'm not really into industrial archealogy) with a two storey building directly beside the canal. This was inhabited by a number of familes after the furnace stopped being used but is now a museum. The loft is the upstairs bit of the museum...not enormously big so I hope it will fit everyone, but with brick walls and roof giving it pretty good accoustics. There are big doors at one end which open out onto the bridge over the canal. I thought if the weather were nice it would be really great to sing out there.

I shall hopefully be going to talk to the landlords tomorrow so will know where and when we can do stuff and what they would like us to do if they have preferences, so I'll let everyone know when I've done that.

If we're going to do a Middle Bar sing I will see if I can arrange a bench-like setup, for which I will, of course need drivers, mates, cabin boys etc. There seem to be a few MBSers coming now so we should be good.

IMHO the actual vaulted Furnace area is one of the finest spaces that we have ever sung in. The sound is orgasmic, aurally that is.

Well I'm feeling very enthusiastic, having just walked down to the two pubs near the furnace and been to check out the Loft again. Both landlords are quite happy to have music going all the time they are open, though one would prefer it not before noon. They have also each got quite a nice little area for the sessions, so a fast session in the Railway and a steadier one in the Woodsman could be good if we have enough people who want to do that.

The Loft is not vaulted like the room below, but Ted and I had a trial sing and the accoustics are really good. It's brick floor, brick walls and non-ceilinged, beamed roof. The only drawback is the large chimney stack running up the middle of the room, but I think we can get round that (If you'll excuse the pun. You actually get into the room via the bridge over the canal, which gives a nice feeling and, as I said before, if the weather is good we could maybe sing on the bridge.

Sorry Hils, I think the Mudgather will have to be in the Loft rather than the pub, but the alcohol won't be too far away!

On the whole, it really is rather a good settign for a folk festival

Could I request that the MudGather is Saturday teatime? 4-6 would probably be good and is after the concert finish! We'll probably have to leave early Sunday afternoon so I'd rather not do anything on the Sunday if that's OK?

Yes, tankards will be fine. I might bring one of those 4 pint plastic thingies we used to take to LNE years ago too. Saves walking up and down to the beer stand.

I was going to put the Mudgather from 3 onwards, but 4 will be fine. I hadn't anything planned after that until 8, so if anyone wants to go on they can.

The only thing I have planned for Sunday is a big sing, which I'm hoping Mike Gibson will lead for me, though I've not had a reply from him yet. That should be about 10. After that people can have the use of the loft to sing and play but nothing organised. The pubs should be ok too for anyone who is still around in the afternoon.

Ooooh! I'm beginning to get excited!

The National Forest Folk Club meets monthly in The Miners Welfare. They were previously at Ashby de la Zouch - as far as I know they operate a concert style club.

The Moira Folk Club is actually nothing to do with this festival; it is run on a monthly basis by Mike Scott and Nina Szifris, and is in fact concerts by guests, with backup by Mike and Nina as "Hand on Heart". They do run a festival at Moira, but this is called the National Forest Folk Festival and is held in July.

National Forest Folk Club

Th festival is usually held at the Miners' Welfare , although the "Conkers" museum has been used in the past.

The Moira Furnace Folk Festival, in late August, is an offshoot of the Scrag End Folk Club, held at Oakthorpe, run by Dave Johns, and the Moira furnace has been chosen because of there not being anywhere suitable in Oakthorpe.

Thanks Dave S , I have a daughter who lives in Barrow-on-Soar and have often wondered about folk clubs when we stay with her on infrequent weekend visits.Barrow on Soar (being on a Monday night)is no good for us.Weekend musician sessions would also be good .

There are sessions and clubs on the second Friday at Loughborough at the Packhorse and alternate Sundays at Swan in the Rushes On 2nd and 4th Saturdays at the Robin Hood in Long Eaton(actually the Tiger)

I saw Debbie over the weekend at Warwick and she was in the final stages of doing the programme (proofreading etc). Seems to be gathering momentum nicely!
