News of a new date on the Festival calendar for this year. Fits in neatly between Sidmouth and Shrewsbury( but clashes with Whitby unfortunately).

"National Forest" is a different festival and will, I'm assuming, be run by Mike and Nina as usual in 2009. Normally at start of July as I remember and run at "Conkers".

Ceilidh Fri night - the overview doesn't seem to mention it, the programme does.

A lot of dancers will have been at Towersey and going to Sidmouth, hope there are enough left for Moira.

Hmmm...don't know what happened to the message I posted on this thread yesterday.

I should have been on here before but here I am now.

Yes, I am involved in running the festival. No it has nothing at all to do with the National Forest Festival.

I've been put in charge of sessions and sigarounds and will also be running the Ashby de la Zouch Folk Club in the furnace itself on the Friday evening. I'm hoping we will be able to have sessions in both of the two closest pubs (The Railway and the Woodsman)

My Guru and AlanWW are both on the bill.

Anything anyone would like to do?

Ok, my thoughts so far are:
We have two nearby pubs who are happy to have something going on. I have yet to talk to the landlords properly but I thought possibly two music sessions, a fast and slower one, in there. Then we have "The loft" which has brilliant accoustics and, if the weather is good, the possibility of opening the door and using the bridge over the canal as well. On Friday evening we're having the "Ashby de la Zouch Folk Club" and I'd like a "Big Sing" on Sunday morning. The rest of the time I thought of a shanty session, a "King Coal and the Cut" session with mining and canal songs, Middle Bar Sing, Mudgather......anything else? The loft is probably available all the time so we could have continuous sessions of one kind or another in there. Could possibly put the Mudgather in the pub....I must talk to the landlords this week and see what THEY want and what accomodation there is for singing and playing.

So..what do you think?

Hah! The first thing Shady said when I mentioned Mudgather was "Chocolate!".

Hils, thanks for offering, I had hoped you would run the Mudgather.

Moira Furnace is an old blast furnace (don't know a lot about that side as I'm not really into industrial archealogy) with a two storey building directly beside the canal. This was inhabited by a number of familes after the furnace stopped being used but is now a museum. The loft is the upstairs bit of the museum...not enormously big so I hope it will fit everyone, but with brick walls and roof giving it pretty good accoustics. There are big doors at one end which open out onto the bridge over the canal. I thought if the weather were nice it would be really great to sing out there.

I shall hopefully be going to talk to the landlords tomorrow so will know where and when we can do stuff and what they would like us to do if they have preferences, so I'll let everyone know when I've done that.

If we're going to do a Middle Bar sing I will see if I can arrange a bench-like setup, for which I will, of course need drivers, mates, cabin boys etc. There seem to be a few MBSers coming now so we should be good.

Well I'm feeling very enthusiastic, having just walked down to the two pubs near the furnace and been to check out the Loft again. Both landlords are quite happy to have music going all the time they are open, though one would prefer it not before noon. They have also each got quite a nice little area for the sessions, so a fast session in the Railway and a steadier one in the Woodsman could be good if we have enough people who want to do that.

The Loft is not vaulted like the room below, but Ted and I had a trial sing and the accoustics are really good. It's brick floor, brick walls and non-ceilinged, beamed roof. The only drawback is the large chimney stack running up the middle of the room, but I think we can get round that (If you'll excuse the pun. You actually get into the room via the bridge over the canal, which gives a nice feeling and, as I said before, if the weather is good we could maybe sing on the bridge.

Sorry Hils, I think the Mudgather will have to be in the Loft rather than the pub, but the alcohol won't be too far away!

On the whole, it really is rather a good settign for a folk festival

I was going to put the Mudgather from 3 onwards, but 4 will be fine. I hadn't anything planned after that until 8, so if anyone wants to go on they can.

The only thing I have planned for Sunday is a big sing, which I'm hoping Mike Gibson will lead for me, though I've not had a reply from him yet. That should be about 10. After that people can have the use of the loft to sing and play but nothing organised. The pubs should be ok too for anyone who is still around in the afternoon.

Ooooh! I'm beginning to get excited!

The Moira Folk Club is actually nothing to do with this festival; it is run on a monthly basis by Mike Scott and Nina Szifris, and is in fact concerts by guests, with backup by Mike and Nina as "Hand on Heart". They do run a festival at Moira, but this is called the National Forest Folk Festival and is held in July.

National Forest Folk Club

Th festival is usually held at the Miners' Welfare , although the "Conkers" museum has been used in the past.

The Moira Furnace Folk Festival, in late August, is an offshoot of the Scrag End Folk Club, held at Oakthorpe, run by Dave Johns, and the Moira furnace has been chosen because of there not being anywhere suitable in Oakthorpe.

The programmes are finished and being printed as we speak. I'm pleased and impressed by them...reading through makes me want to go to it and I already am!

We started this a bit later than was wise and it's our first time, but if all goes well it should be good and even better next time as we will have more time to organise and have learnt lots from this one. What we need is for people to come and make it what they want it to be for the future. Constructive feedback is vital to us so please let us know what you think.

For singaround/sessions type activities, are there going to be suggested allocations of areas for, for example, singaround, English tunes, Irish or is it just a case of seeing who turns up?

I've kind of aimed it so that the sessions in the two pubs are a faster tune session in one and a moderate paced tunes in the other but it does depend who turns up at them. The singarounds in the Loft are all different and programmed and, apart from the Middle Bar sing, can be songs and tunes. There is probably room in the small marquee at some times for another singaround if anyone wants it. This year it's a case of seeing what people really want. I'm open to suggestions and will try and accomodate whatever anyone asks for

Hils, Ted says the Woodman has Pedigree and a selection, the Railway has Bass, otherwise he's not sure except that they are all real ales. Don't know what beers are in the beer wagon on site except people were asking for particular real ales and he was going to accomodate them. I asked for proper cider, plus there will be a couple of barrels of Thatchers in the Loft for people who make a 'donation'

Hils, the Mudgather is from 4 to 7 on Saturday if that's ok. Sorry it's not shown on the website, I have been remiss in not checking it properly. I've hopefully now got it sorted and all the singarounds should show on the site. There is a little room for overflow at the end if necessary because the next Loft session doesn't start until 8.

We're thinking of leaving the caravan somewhere near Warwick on the Sunday so that we can pick it up for Shrewsbury the following weekend instead of dragging it to & from Surrey again. Anyone have any suggestions for possible campsites where we could just store it for 5 nights?

We have festival T-shirts available to order. We didn't want to buy a load and be left with some on our hands so thought it was better to let people order the sizes they want etc. They are £10 and have the furnace logo on them...bright and cheerful. The campsite is a big flat area with plenty of space for pooch exercise, but there is a kiddies playground which will obviously be out of bounds.

Hey ho, I've only just happened on this thread - having in the past checked out threads labelled "new folk festival" they usually turned out to be somewhere distant, not even in the uk, or in the states or the antipodes, so I'd not clocked this one yet.

My loss tho', for it looks like a good 'un, just what I'd need after what's been a real dismal year so far.

But sadly I'm committed to sorting out life stuff all weekend and almost certainly won't be able to make it down.

Whatever, I hope it all goes really well.

Well, that's rapidly gonna become one of my favourite festivals then! What an excellent weekend everyone, well done to all involved in the organisation and thanks so much for giving Steve Robinson and I a great concert spot - please consider us again for next year!!!........I'm coming even if you don't!

The festival was well balanced, well paced, supporting and supported by loads of really good quality performers (local and national) and the spaces were sensibly set out. It was EXTREMELY friendly - stewards (thanks for providing the extra fairy lights by Saturday eve!), organisers and locals alike (thanks especially there to the guys at the Railway for a stonking venue and welcoming atmosphere for late session - hope they know how inundated they're going to be next year!).

Had a brilliant weekend.........just a wonderfully warm feeling from everyone who was there, got stuck in and enjoyed themselves.

PS I suspect the organisers have already started considering what they would do if the weather had not been so beautiful......so I won't mention it again!

Whew! It WAS good wasn't it? We were soooo lucky with the weather! Yes Alie, we've started thinking about what to do with the amphitheatre in case of rain. We've read the feedback forms and had several good suggestions on that front so we will look at them all to see what is feasible.

Btw Allie, when we went through the forms, in the section "What did you particularly enjoy, the most often mentioned artists were "Kiss the Misstress!" "Winter Wilson" and "Alie and Steve"! Hope that makes you feel good! What made me feel good was that apart from artists, the most frequent reference was Singarounds, so I obviously got that right!

The survivors session in the Railway was packed and brilliant and the landlord was completely out of his tree! He and his wife are VERY happy to have us back next year.

The only thing that bemused me somewhat in the feedback forms is someone saying "In the so-called Middle Bar session, they were too full of their own importance and didn't follow singaround etiquette" This is very strange since the Middle Bar session didn't actually happen!

I could go on for pages here but I have to go and help clean up the site so....thank you to everyone who came and to all those who offered helpful comments. Richard I'll find out the details of the sound outfit and pass them on...how good they were was also one of the most frequent verbal comments.

Moorley man...feel free to PM me. Hope you can make it next year

Stayed on the camp site until this morning.

A great w'end with lovely weather and a superb setting - what a background for an amphitheatre!

Although there were none of the 'usual suspects' - sorry the 'top of the bill names' you see at EVERY festival throughout any year - the performances were good and, as has been mentioned previously, the sound was excellent.

See you next year......

Yes,well done Lynne----Karen has taken some great photos and will doubtless be putting them on here very soon. As you know,we spent most of Saturday in nearby Sutton Bonnington,looking for graves of Karen's ancestors,but enoyed what we saw of the festival,especially Ali & Steve, Kiss the Mistress, and "MGAS" , of course. Having a mental age of about 10, I ,naturally,much enjoyed the Civil War representatives and their assorted pieces of ordnance....great fun, you MUST have them back again !

We'd like to echo the praise for the sound in the amphitheatre. They seemed to be able to sort things out almost as soon as the acts got on stage without sound checking.

Yes, the quality of the sound and the almost uncanny ability of the engineer wwere among the things most commented on. We have already spoken to them about booking them (with Jeremy the engineer specified) next year and will make a firm booking within the next week or so.

We are also already addressing several things people have asked about. So it should be even better next year!

What a wonderful weekend, an excellent 1st Festival!!! Huge congratulations and thanks to Lynne, Ted, Dave, Maggie & all the team for making it such a success in that superb location. Well done you lot!!

Echoing others comments, I really enjoyed 'Kiss the Mistress' and I could listen to Alie & Steve all day, not to mention Winter Wilson, and as for the Sound Engineer - fantastic! Thanks to Lynne & Dave for letting me 'have a go', I thoroughly enjoyed myself - could have done without the midge though....

Thanks too, to everyone who came to the MudGather, for staying, singing, meeting, bringing and sharing chocolate in various guises. Lynne's 'Ginned Sloe Slab' was a real winner, just wait till she starts producing her Beer teabags *grin*

I think it is fair because then the organisers know who to invite back - sometimes, though, the person filling in the form might not have seen all the guests - one person who hasn't been mentioned so far is a young lad called Liam Robinson who was on at the amphitheatre on Friday who I thought was brilliant- perhaps when your slot is can sometimes have an effect, but sometimes the Friday performers might have gone out of memory a bit by the time the forms are filled in.

Hey Dave, Noel was doing the David Bailey routine with his camera, and as for the survivors night... (gave up trying to get in there), the rendition of 'Jerusalem' had me in mind of the lobsters at Rourke's Drift singing 'Men of Harlech' before the fuzzywuzzies charged!!!!

Moira Furnace Folk Festival - Fantastic it was!!!!! The venue, the weather, the artists, the sound, the vibe, and the beer - the whole weekend. Revisiting the pub I had my firt pint in, priceless. They even remembered my mum & dad! Looks like we started something (Anne,Terry,Josie & myself) that Friday night in the Railway Inn. Saturday & Sunday evenings there were a real blast! Lynne check out there function room upstairs, it has great acoustics. One moan. I don't do mornings well so the 11.40 slot on Saturday was a bit of a shock - the website said nothing started before noon. Hopefully I was OK once I got past that witching hour. Don't be fooled by Josie's photos - I wasn't that bad - there may not have been anyone in the chairs but there were a fair few around the banking. Small is beautiful. Please keep it that way. Also it doesn't need "big name headliners" as the talents on display proved, just a few more bodies around the various activities/performances to show their appreciation which I am sure will happen next year. It was a privilege to be in on the inaugral event.

I don't see anything unfair in quoting the top three. Is it unfair to award people in competitions 1st 2nd or 3rd prizes? We had enough people on the bill that those who weren't in the top 3 were actually in the majority. When people are exceptional they deserve to be told so...and in public. No one said they others weren't good...they were brilliant and I don't think there was anyone who didn't get at least one mention as a favourite on the feedback forms.
