Dwayne Thorpe wrote "The Ballad of Lewis Milld" to that tune. In Digitrad.

That's it. "The Banks of Claudy" or "Claudy Banks".

Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

Bob

The Johnsons (Johnstons) also used that tune for "Banks of Claudy". I've heard a song to the same tune called "Erins Lovely Lee", but I can't remember the words. I think it started..."On March the sixth in sixty-nine we sailed from Queenstown quay..."or something like that.

It was indeed Contra Band who recorded Banks of Claudy to the tune Sweeneys Men used for HCB

The Cruise of the Calabar is a good old Irish song that has a similar tune to one of the HCB tunes. It can be found in O'Lochlainn's Irish Street Ballads. Johnson's Motor Car? similar tune.

I have a 3-CD compilation of revival stuff by Scottish artists in the car, which includes a folk-rock-ish version of Banks of Claudy to the normal Handsome Cabin Boy tune. I'll check tomorrow who it's by (might be Contra Band - but might be someone else)

I remember these from when I was a child. Probably had Irish words like "colleen", etc. I apologize for not being more helpful. It is just difficult to remember.

Many thanks,

Bob

Thanks for your kindness. As you can see, I really need to provide more info. The words I'm after may be old Irish words, perhaps popular in the 1950's.

I hope that this is helpful.

Many thanks,

Bob

There's a version of 'In a British Man of War' which was collected in Newfoundland from a family named Kenny, Their tune is the same as Sweeneys Men used for the 'Handsome Cabin Boy.'

You'll find rather more than one tune used for different versions of 'The Handsome Cabin Boy', but I expect you mean the one that revival singers generally know (see the DT file, where there is a midi).

It's likely that a good few other songs were sung to that tune, and if it was a long time ago it won't be one of the modern parodies. What we really need is some hint from you as to what this song was about, even if you don't remember any of the words at all. That will save people just making wild guesses.

Another version, Steve. The same tune, but different words.

There are at least 2 well-known tunes to THCB. By alternative words do you mean another song entirely or another version of THCB?

Dear Friends,

The air that I know that goes with the words to The Handsome Cabin Boy also has alternative words, I think. Can anyone please point me to these? My father sang these when I was a child and that was too many years to recall.

Many thanks,

Bob
