Details for the 14th Gainsborough festival:

Headliners are the New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters from the Galax area.

They will be supported by The Foundlings, Old Yeller Dog and The Coffin Dodgers.

Cloggers will be catered for in various styles by Shane Bond from Virginia and FOAOTMAD's own dance representative, Sara Marshall. There will also be a performance by the Bootleggers from Scunthorpe.

There's a very welcome return for Cath Tyler and her Shape Note singing workshop.

Concerts, Open Stage, Beginners Slow Jam, Square Dancing and, of course, a grand selection of music workshops.

February 13th to 15th at the old venue - now renamed Trent Valley Academy - The Avenue, Gainsborough.

Weekend tickets - FOAOTMAD members £30, non-members £40
Saturday - all day £25
Friday or Saturday evening concerts - £15 each

More information telephone or email Keith Johnson - contact details on the poster which, complete with booking form, is available as a pdf download from the FOAOTMAD website.

FOAOTMAD

And there's a number of Mudcatters who will be going, so they may be able to answer any questions here.

I assume that by "the old venue" you mean the same location as last year?
Hopefully we will be able to get along for at least some of the weekend.
Quack!

Yes, indeed Geoff, the old school. Possibly for the last time in that venue depending on how the construction of the replacement is going. Perhaps Sooz can give us more details of how the future looks...

Indeed, I am right now. I'll never forget the great jam outside the cafeteria with many, many folks playing "My Home's Across the Blue Ridge Mountains". Made us feel right at home.

Susette loves to tell the story of Dave Bing's banjo workshop with 35 banjos in one room!

I love to recall the many, many friendly faces.

thanks for the memories.

all the best,
chance

The school is set to close in July and the new building is almost complete. I've retired now, but I'm watching with interest as I'm thinking of hiring the new school for the folk festival in October. I'll keep you informed.

>>as I'm thinking of hiring the new school for the folk festival in October<<

That makes sense Sooz, especially if the singarounds are there as well instead of having all the singaround folkies pissing off elsewhere, never to be seen again.

Tim Bing! Tim Bing, not Dave on the banjo.

Sorry about that! A mere slip of the tongue.

Another neat thing about last year was meeting Kate Lissauer. I've been listening to her Walk Chalk Chicken album, just great it is.

I hope she's there with you good folks this year, if so, Nick please tell her I said howdy.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters. I saw them playing at a square dance just outside Mount Airy NC last August - great singing , fiddling and rock solid string band sound. They love jamming as well....
The name comes from the old Galax band called the Bogtrotters, with the late Wade Ward and other great players, and I believe New Ballard's Branch is the street in Galax where Dennis Hall lives.

Cath Tyler last gave us Shape Note workshops two years ago, and entranced everyone with her skill and deep knowledge of the style. She provided everyone with a copy of the Sacred Harp books, arranged the punters into different voice parts, and taught the basics of reading shape note scores. Before long we were raising the roof with some blood curdling harmonies.
She couldn't make it last year due to commitments, but this time she'll be back - I can't wait..

Just a reminder and thanks to those people who contributed to supporting CLIC Sargent at last years festival.

The total raised for the sale of the Yellowbellies 2 Cd and your contributions came to £831.

The letter of acknowledgement of the £831 can be seen at Faldingworth Live, Faldingworth Memorial Hall LN8 3SE

Deirdrie, I can only suggest you contact Keith Johnson direct - see the first post about where to download contact details as I don't think it would be right to add his phone number here without permission. I'm not sure how many workshops he has planned for Cath or if he has given any thought to the possibilities of people coming specifically for individual ones.

How's the weather doing around Gainsborough. Did the rain which hit us last night and washed away most of the snow get as far as you, or was it still cold enough for more of the white fluffy stuff?
Just checking...

I can't find a programme on the website and here only the workshop timetable but not one for concerts.--so a couple of questions:

Are there tickets left? Is it possible to turn up and buy on the day?

Time and travel---is it possible to know the times of the concerts as well the as workshops?

You can certainly turn up on the day and get a ticket - no problem. We've never had to turn anyone away in 14 years.

The Friday concert won't start till after 8.30 this year because of a College cockup, but it's worth getting there early - there'll be sessions in the bar and elsewhere You can arrive any time after 5 o'clock.

The Saturday concert starts at 7 o'clock, with a square dance after it from about 10.30ish till 00.30ish.
There is an Open Stage in the main hall from 3.00 - 5.30 which always produces some unexpected goodies

Saturday Concert line-up
Bootleggers Dance team with Lootbeggers band (from Scunthorpe)
The Coffin Dodgers (from Devon & Somerset)
The Foundlings (from South Wales)
Old Yeller Dog String Band (From S. England)
The New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters (from Galax, Virginia)

Cheers
Ray

Peregrina,

If you are coming, let me know as I live only about a mile from the venue!

If you are heading to Gainsborough by train, there was a fire in the signal box at Lea Road Station earlier in the week, so trains may not yet be back to timetable.

Hope to see you!.

Had a great day there yesterday but as we got home I realised I had left the hard case from my autoharp on the shelf in the cafe/bar. It's black with green lining. If anyone reads this before the festival is over could they let BanjoRay or Oombanjo (John)have it and we can collect it from them.
Thanks

The Bogtrotters set on Saturday was the best thing I've ever seen in Old Time Music on stage. The only came over for the one festival and they're back in Virginia today. So the message is - if you want to see the best in Old Time, forget the Barbican, or any large venue and get to Gainsborough in February.
Eddie Bond's fiddle workshops and the jams in the corridors and classrooms were to die for.

Ray
