Largely as a result of contacts forged at Mudcat, and the occasional reminder in PMs, I have at last got round to reviewing two excellent albums: The Whisper by Tom Bliss/Songs of Trial and Triumph by Brian Peters.

http://www.salutlive.com/2009/01/bless-bliss-and-brian.html

.....for those who may be interested.

Different topic, but any advice welcome on how to make Typepad behave when using a Mac - see what's happened, for no obvious reason, to the text of the Peters review. It has been a nightmare since Typepad introduced what I think it calls improvements.

"Bless, Bliss and Brian" sound like a firm of dodgy solicitors!

(Sorry Colin, Tom & Brian).

...should be me saying sorry, Deidre. It was an embryonic version of the bad pun that forced itself on me for the headline: Blessed Brian and Bliss

I've nicked it for my own website, with link to yours - hope that's ok (lots of traffic at the moment due to the Radio 4 airing on Monday).

I must admit, I was misled by the thread title - it made me expect a review of a joint gig by these two fine fellows (yet the prospect of such a gig would tax even my imagination!!)....

But it's so good to see their recorded work receiving due acclaim now, and not just due to "word of mouth".
Those interested in learning more, can find some further (in-depth) reviews of both of these exceptional cds at www.netrhythms.co.uk/reviews.html (just follow the alphabetical links from there).

Me too.
I thought they'd formed a duo. Interesting prospect . . .

Actually I've always fancied trying to get Brian to be unfaithful to Gordon (mind you, I tried to get Gordon to be unfaithful to Brian once, so we'd swing for sure)! I think we'd be good together - but then I'm a huge fan of Brian's.

I forgot to add how good his CD is - but then it's only what you'd expect from a chap who really knows exactly what he's doing with this stuff. I'm particularly intrigued by the overlap with another of my heros, Chris Foster's Outsiders. Fascinating to hear two such great talents tackling the same material - gives a real insight into how the songs have developed over the years.

Oh and Brain's Child 274 is simply awe-inspiring, not just for the hysterical re-working of the words, but the box playing underneath. Now THERE's perfect comic timing for you!

Tom

And thanks Morley Man for your most kind review - which is also linked from my site.

Yeah, bit of a scare, there. Had I suppressed the memory of some disastrously unrehearsed duo performance?? But hey, Tom, this is beginning to look like a groundswell of public demand - at this rate we're going to have to give it a go. I think we should resist the temptation to include Brian Blessed, though - stolen limelight and all that. In the meantime I'll be 'playing away' with Jeff Davis in February - promiscuity is my middle name.

An honour to share a review with you, sir. Thanks, Colin.

Just had to do a quick Google to check that Child 274 was "Our Goodman/Seven Night's Drunk" and indeed it is.
Funnily though, the search gave the first link to a "Sacred Texts" website, does that make Brian's version blasphemy?
Great CD from Brian, not familiar with Tom Bliss, that's what you get from living in Canada, that and several feet of snow.

Tom Bliss RRRRRROCKS! :0)

Have you got his 'Island Stories' yet, Colin? 'Boat to Burhou' is so lovely that you'll need to play it over and over again. And...have you seen him playing live? He's a **great** storyteller, one of our very best. I've just ordered 'The Whisper' a few minutes ago, given a gentle nudge by you, so thanks for that.

AND...(but shhhhhh...don't tell him this..) ;0) I've been reading Tom's posts for many years now, and he comes across as one of the fairest and most inclusive people on the English traditional (and non-traditional) scene. Having seen him at Sidmouth a year or two back, I'd also say he's a very kind and gentle man too.

....and as I sit here listening to his 'Island Stories' I'm thinking of one of Tom's songs which found its way to China a while back, via Myspace. It was a song I saw him perform at Sidmouth with Tom Napper, one that he said he sometimes felt unable to introduce himself, as the story behind it, The Dying Rooms in China, affected him so deeply. Luckily, for one baby girl, there was a happy ending and Tom's song was written for his friends, who became her new family.

'Turn And Face The Wind'

I sent that song over to a Myspace 'friend' of mine in China, who was in the process of adopting a little baby girl, found abandoned on the streets of his local town, where he teaches English. Clay was really touched by Tom's song. And Tom, if you read Clay's blog entitled 'The Swallows Nest' you'll see that life has moved on for he and Pam, in an even more positive way. Heck, knowing your capacity for songwriting, I'd expect it's possibly more than likely that another song lies somewhere in that blog too.

I've just found a video about The Dying Rooms, but it's far too distressing to post here. Suffice to say, I'm so very pleased that Sacha has a new life, with people who love her dearly.

And lastly, if anyone's reading this, who's not yet heard Tom's songs, then take a look at the link below, which goes to the lyrics of his songs, with information on the stories behind them all, and you'll begin to see the calibre of Tom Bliss's songwriting skills. The subjects he covers are wide, varied, interesting and informative.

He's a real Treasure! :0)

Indeed Tom is one of our finest and, as already said, Island Stories is a classic. Read my review (Tykes News) of that CD on Tom's site and spot the (un)deliberate and embarrassing mistake I made which Tom has been kind enough not to mention! I listened to the CD the other day and could not believe I had made such a boob!

Tom and Tom Napper will be appearing at Queensbury Folk Day (West Yorks) and I really would urge you to see them live if you have not done so (other venues are available!).

Thankyou Lizzie

Tom

(And Joe, you're not the only person who's done that. Our voices are so similar we're sometimes not sure who's singing which harmony - and what with the names and all, it's a wonder we manage to go to the correct house at the end of a tour)!

That should be easy Tom, you just have to remember which one of you has a silly nickname and make sure THAT Tom doesn't go to your house! ;-)

If I can get to Spondon I'll see you there, failing that I'll see you and the aformentioned 'Tom with the silly nickname' at Chesterfield!

Muppitz is referring to 'Bunny' (as in the Duracell Bunny - who keeps drumming long after everyone else has finished). Anyone who's ever played a late night session with Tom will understand - he just never misses a triplet!

And while we're in mutual congratulation mode - I don't think I've seen anything on Mudcat about Muppitz winning debut album of the year on the Fatea website - a stunning and well-deserved achievement that I'd like to put down to my skills as a graphic designer, but which is actually due to her magnificent talent.
