I was once told the the Folk Map was as useful as a, Chocolate Fireguard.

Which I thought was quite apt.

I think the only people who can alter the map are the map's weby people and the original posters. I time limit with e-mail warning might help

It's a perennial problem on the net that web site creators are very keen to set pages up, but are notoriously reluctant to keep them updated. They get enthused with the initial idea and then the enthusiasm wavers - and sometimes dies. It's exactly the problem I've encountered time and time again - which is why I posted my advice to folk club web site creators and organisers...

If the time ever comes when I don't have the time or the enthusiasm to keep my pages up-to-date, I shall withdraw them entirely!

I recognise all the faults people have identified. Some can be corrected by the weby people but updates and closures are down to club organises.

I think this is great. I don't know how up to date it will be but for the likes omyself, who'll be coming over strickly for music from the US in mid July & we're staying till early August, this is a great guide for us, hopefully i'll prove true & useful. Thanks Les, I've just bookmarked it.

i saw this before when searching for singing in Lake District. Don't think it is very up to date. Nothing in Essex except Waltham Abbey folk which appears to be half way to France. Perhaps it is a floating venue?

The Folk Map site demands that users have the latest version of whichever browser they use. This is just bad manners in a website which one would imagine would need to appeal to a broad spectrum of users and a wide age range of machines and software. It's even worse manners when their "Browser Check" clicky causes your browser to crash. Thanks a lot!

I wasn't aware of this resource before today, and I can't say I'm totally impressed. If it relies on individual, proactive inputs from club/event organisers, it's going to be well out of date. I can see several gaps in the south-east.

My pages are not complete yet but, as far as they go, they aren't too bad. I've some more contacts to check out (in between gigging) and hope to get some more info in the pages soon. My project includes positive plans to keep the pages as up-to-date as possible - not easy to achieve... I was discussing the "four counties" project with our esteemed 'Catter "The Snail" at the Lewes Saturday Folk evening last Saturday. As he pointed out, organisers may be happy to respond to emails about changes to dates, venues, etc., but they never tell you when the club's folded!

I agree that it could be a great resource, but the trouble comes when you try and keep it up to date!

Venues come and venues go. Sessions move or disappear without trace. Clubs can move from pub to pub depending on the commercial prospects of the publican.....

Much better perhaps to keep your ear to the ground at local gatherings or....better still....ask on Mudcat!

Odd really. Do they clear it out occasionally? I put all the Ashwell stuff in a couple of years ago and it's gone now. The stuff is still happening, that is ... just not on the map.
