Yowza! How's that for short title and incorporating the UK designation. How many Stokes outside the UK are there anyway?

Anyway, I spoke to Peter the landlord and he tells me that we are in fact welcome, and that people did like it. The Barmaid (well, maybe technically not a maid) tells me she was singing all afternoon and popping down to our end whenever she could. Peter (aka Shuffles) who is not the landlord regretted he missed it. Apparently others have popped in and said "Damn, wish we had known" and in one case "Did anyone do "the 7 Drunken nights" - oh yes I know who they are". So I will do some posters.

Peter the Landlord also says he not only had a hangover and a 4 am bedtime, but also the flu or he would have been more chirpy and he promises some roast tatties in dishes for the singers. I would have pressed him about the other fire as well but he was involved in a drinking contest. Also the pub was officially "shut" except to those who knew the secret knock, having a "private party" and full of cigarette smoke just like in the good old days.

Welcome to Lower Coke. A Leery atmosphere in the bar tonight, like those cowboy films where the hero enters a Mexican cantina, with low light, the men at the bar a barrage of testosterone and stubble, and the occasional woman who is plainly "along for the ride".

So on Sunday the 25th January 2009 we bring civilisation (although more "robust" songs from RuffnReddy are requested) to Lower Coke.

Starting, therefore, about opening time on Sunday the 25th January, continuing until we get fed up or alarmed by the gangsters shuffling in (or maybe people who wish to sing "Bold Robert Emmett" or "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" - people are asking why there is not more Irish music whereupon I start a dangerous political argument) there will be a mixed song session in the Nag's Head, site of one of Hogarth's orgies - ME3 9RD if you have satnav, although that's a bit timewarp for us down here with the webbed feet and the sheep in the family)

Tell you what, Woodsie's video on the other thread of our last session started looking very like the intro to some of the commercial S&M p0rn0 sites on the internet.

Carpark opposite.

Acoustics good.

Heating not so good.

I am not providing overnight cots or chili stew for Monday Breakfast (save by VERY special arrangement). Monday is a working day.

Park your machete kukri kris dirk or shank in the wood of the bar. Saturday night specials can be checked at the door.

The landlord does NOT let his guard dog out to mingle (and his new Staff (or maybe pit bull) pup is the prettiest little baby).

So - who is coming? Rejoin your roots (music) in Lower Coke!

Well I will be there. My work shift finishes on the 24th and I dont go back to work untill the 27th so two and three quarter days to recover after the event.
I pleased the landlord views of the last event have finally come to light and even more pleased that the locals who missed it viewed there dissapointment. You know What is said " if it dont seem to work first time try try again. Bit like you Chain saw at Knockholt last year Richard? Bit like my Mandolin too.

The Landlord's grandchildren (I think they were) were all over it during the day yesterday. I will enquire further. I do not know if there is a cut-off time for sprogs.

We can be there. Chris is sending most of his students to Disney Paris the following week so he doesn't have to do a lot of prep on the weekend.

Naughtyforty... remind me by email and I will bring a little kit of beading for your little 'un to play with to keep her occupied and to take home.

I spoke to one young girl who was very the worse for drink while outside having a breath of nicotine, and she said she loved "that sort of thing"
as she was jigging away to her very own beat.
And at least we did have the end with the fire, away from the google-box.

Ah, I think I know the one Dead Horse - is she the one with the gap in her front teeth and curly dark hair, quite slim? Incidentally, will you do us some of these Kent anthems?

Naughty40 - I have enquired and Peter the Landlord says he is sure it will be all right.

I have delivered posters to be put in windows so maybe those in the village who professed sad ingorance will get there next time.

(Address of the new practice venue, is on the BG website - www.bishopgundulfs.co.uk) - shameless plug, I know - but others get awaywith it!!!

Hope you have a great day - Dilligaf and I will be dressed in Civil War Costume and marching the length of The Mall as your event kicks off.

Hope it goes well!!!

I wouldn't mind playing with Fiddlebird (musically speaking of course) and indeed I spent some time last night trying a couple of my things in keys that would be more fiddlefriendly, since she gets a bit umpty at E major and positively irked at F#m and Bbm.

""JB perhaps somebody could invent a capo for the violin. then cut little notches on the neck for positions/keys""

There's already a perfectly adapted capo for the violin, which can in fact do far more than the standard bar type capos commonly used on guitars.

It is a rather more complex five piece setup which can be very rapidly moved up and down the neck, to achieve the desired effect.

It is normally referred to as the "Hand".

Refresh:

Time to sort out who is coming in the hope that we can put on a good show.

I think we probably have Essex Girl, Woodsie, George, Fisheye and Fair Maid of Nottingham, Pete the Hat, maybe the Barden of England, and also NaughtyForty and apprentice - and Virginia Tam and the Silent One, oh, and Melodeonboy and Growler and probably Fiddlebird. And Dead Horse who has even indicated he might be a source singer and bring us some songs not often heard, from the heyday of Elsie's Band.

Maybe DonT?

Is anyone in touch with SheppeyPaul?

I'll email Hakuna Matata

I'm not sure I have an up to date email for Richard Matthewman.

Is anyone in touch with Keith Pearson or Dave Leigh?

Anyone else I should be chasing?

Kev the Clogs and Dilligaf are of course pretending to be 400 years old that day!

VT and the Silent One will be bringing Sleepie Rosie. She has accepted my invitation. Go easy on her she is a newbie.

What about (is his name) Norman? Brings almost as many instruments as you RB, to the Good Intent. Oh but he does some sort of boating thing on Sundays in Canterbury doesn't he?

Also there is weeJock/John?

And what about Romanyman and Steve May?

Do ya think TDL is up for it yet? What is the latest on Mumblin Len?

And if anyone knows Paul of Sheppey, can they find out if he knows that young woman Jo from same place? I would love to hear her again.

We can pick up Pete the Hat in Chatham, or Rochester or Strood if he needs a lift. Unless Essex Girl has arranged transport for the FolkMob. Oh I forgot Dave Kenningham and Rafflesbear and his Lady.

Yes, I forgot Sleepy Rosie. She seemed quite able to look after herself on threads and I am sure need show no fear in person.

Norman! GOod idea. I will email Growler about him and Steve, and Wee Jock.

Romany Man is I think coming, but I have yet to hear him sing (except for the occasional chorus) ever. I know I can't hear Treacle and Obvious, but I don't know if they are coming.

Do you mean that the identity of Rafflesbear is about to be revealed?

I am sure Girl Friday will keep us informed about their movements and thos eof the Leopard Cubs (here, kitty, kitty, you can play the ladderframe Hagstrom...)

I don't know the true identity of Rafflesbear. I thought he was conncted to LadyRaffles. Think her name is Sue. She sang with Naughtyforty at GI Wassail. Might be wrong though.

Would be great to see so many descend upon the Nags Head. Will the landlord recover?

Apart from that terrifying Richard Bridge of course. Who no doubt lives atop a beanstalk and eats ten innocent little Sleepy Rosies every day for his breakfast... ;-)

We will have Sleepy R with us and we can collect 1 other at Rochester Station, so long as they are not carrying too much kit. I am leaving my instruments at home this time so small boot is available, but not for bodies.

Anyone Hat or Shirt persons or any others named by items of clothing, please PM me.

And someone had better bring Wee Jock, as I doubt if anyone else can get the words of this right (it being Burns Night)

ADDRESS TO A HAGGIS

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An cut you up wi ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
The auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
'Bethankit' hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect sconner,
Looks down wi sneering, scornfu view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit:
Thro bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll make it whissle;
An legs an arms, an heads will sned,
Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis

Richard Macdonald Bridge. who,d of thought it.
I have a bright Orange wig and a XL coco the clown outfit I found in a bin bag at a bus stop in Eltham two years ago. I,ll bring it with me.
Only messing about seriously me Woodsie and Fisheye will be there by opening time so if theres any furniture arranging and table setting to be done Im happy to help.
I dont do furniture moving when the session started and crowded simply because it bloody dodgy to be seen Cav-vaulting about a packed room with tables chairs held aloft .Pissed. its a bloody Par-larva and Its a easy way to have someones eye out or worse. Has I learned at Crayford trying to get Jim Radford a Chair from the other Bar. folk dont take kindly to having a chair leg in the Earhole.

11 - and another to sing about how brutally the socket was raped by the alien insertion and then gave birth to light.

12 - and another to sing of how the brothers of the socket would avenge it by leaving the lightbulb to the wolves in the woods.

Bt I DO like the idea of re-arranging the well known round "Ah Poor Bird"

I understand we will be getting some roastpotatoes - not wholly Burns-ish. I considered buying a haggis today but thought it would look rude to walk in with it slice it up and hand it round - and I was NOT going to get involved in mashing turnips!

I have been in tonight and checked the beer. I can recommend it. The Burns Special (4.5%) is adequately bitter, with a somewhat malty front end, a clean and lemony, sightly fragrant, midrange (presumably to cut through the grease in the haggis), and a smooth finish without the sulphurous aftertaste that is so common and that I so detest.

We drank the barrel out apart from 8 pints last time. Let's do better this time.

Some young people who were enjoying the karaoke tonight may come too!

Has anyone got "Bring us a barrell" clear for this time - or that other one that I think Ramskyte recorded

"Drink boys, drink, and see that ye do not spill, for if ye do ye shall drink two, for that is our master's will"

Or the Frenchy one.

DRINK LET'S DRINK

And the nights are very long
The days are very short
But we sing a merry song
We sing it loud we sing it clear
To help the year along
Till summer is a comin' in again

Sooo.. drink let's drink
And raise a merry glass
Drink to the scent of the rising grass
For every good man
Every woman, lad and lass
Sing summer is a comin' in again

Thank you Al, for the loan of lovely guitar. I am very excited.

I am already playing and singing House of the Rising Sun on the new guitar. Actually I used to play and sing the boy version on my front porch in Virginia. Must learn the girl version.

Hey Fisheye! This is the kind of front porch playing and singing I did back in the day. Needle and the Damage Done, Melissa, Dust in the Wind, Country Roads, House of Rising Son, some Appalachain gospels, couple of Christmas carols and a sad attempt at Classical Gas. I am sure there were others but I can't remember them. Oh God yeah! Stairway to Heaven, may it never cross this pretty guitar's frets.

I had a stellar afternoon.... thanks to all.

I had to get that lump of Cheese out when Melodeon boy done the Dairylea song I did not mean to throw it at him though, And heres a tip a Mandolin string makes a perfect Cheese wire. It was lovely Cheese hope you all enjoyed it. Isabella was great. good singers good players great day.

Could I just add that I had to use all my diplomatic skills to talk down and so calm down a local ( no names)

Who was really pissed off when he was told to sush in his own pub, if folk must go round sushing people could they please do so in a tone whereby it will not cause a near alticatrion when one goes out for a smoke. And a point to those who do go round sushing folk remember it a pub we are the guests in that pub.

Isabela is cute enough to get away with sushing folk. but for adults that do it you draw attention to both yourself and others in the group, This time it was my turn, I cvalm ed the chap down and we shook hands upon my departure.

Look forward to the next on in Feb.

Was that that noisy bugger Paddy Cannon? The one with the short hair and camo uniform, sitting right up with us? He and the lady were most apologetic to me - it was that they were shouting right behind the Shirt Murderer's ear as he was trying to sing - it would certainly put me off as I explained to them and they were totally OK with it...

And it' s not his local any more.

Or was it when I did do a bit of a big shush as Cari was doing a quiet piece on low whistle with Steve?

Horses for courses.

I heard someone at the far end of the bar shush another talker as John was reading the Address to a Haggis, and almost throughout that, you could hear a pin drop.

Last Sunday in February is 22nd unless my free yet expensively produced Essex Trading Standards calendar is incorrect. I love dissing the council, especially since they are about to give me and about 20,000 other employees the shaft.

I think I am already up to accompanying myself on at least one song on the Sigma. Good thing too. I may soon be busking outside county hall in a few months time.

Must think on writing a folk song about being a riffed council worker. Snerk. Yeah that will get loads of sympathy from the tax payiing public.

Pete, I know where you're coming from, it's not a criticism of any one but we all need to be mindful that we're in a boozer and the regulars have had no say about it. We can't go bossing them about. It's a pub, it has pub noise, c'est la vie. Anyone who wants a concert hall atmosphere needs to stay away. Play music that suits the mood of the audience; if they seem to want some foot-stomping sing-along stuff then put the whistles away, or just live with them switching off from the act and talking amongst themselves. Sorry if that seems harsh but it's the reality of the situation.

Pub noise is one thing. Yelling the odds behind the performer's ear, or over a lady's whistle is another. If a punter has no manners I will tell him so. If none of them have any manners then no more sessions - well, not organised by me. You may recollect that I was very iffy about organising the second of these sessions because of how loud and leery the landlord was first time round.

I'm easy.

If it was Paddy (I've had no confirmation yet) he knows where I live.

If it's a general feeling, then oh well, bang goes another session.

Paddy's usually legless and he only has one working arm - so he's nearly "armless" too - boom boom.

He came to all the old Ship sessions, came to my house (several times), bragged to all assembled about the size of his dick, happily did not produce evidence, nearly got shivved in my kitchen, has has shedloads of free legal work from me including at 3 am when I was pissed and trying to get police out of his house - etc etc etc.

Oh, and I sorted a mini-PA for his rodeo bull.

In fact, I think he's a friend, in a sort of Lower Stoke way....

Just so long as he leaves his banjo at home.

I am squeezing tears back from laughing so hard. Pete better keep a table between yourself and RB next session, if Paddy shows up armed with banjo.

VT. What a fiasco
I didnt know.

Paddy told me he played the Banjo, so being friendly and encouraging I said Where is it? He said it was indoors, I said no good indoors is it? So I said bring it with you next time.He said I will Pete,I will.

I did not know Paddy only had the use of one arm. I mean should that effect his playing ability?

Definition of Golden Silence.....A one armed Banjo player.

I suppose when he gets legless, he needs a hand to get home.

I discussed the Cannon situation with Pete the Landlord and his missus tonight. Cannon made himself thoroughtly unpopular later in the day, bringing his dogs in and shouting at them until the early hours(!) and I was told "If he wants to shout why does he sit up that end" so I think the wind is in our favour.
