Subject: Moor & Coast Festival to End after 2009
From: GUEST,M&C
Date: 10 Jan 09 - 08:54 AM

The festival committee have made the decision to make the 2009 Moor & Coast Festival the final one.

There are a number of reasons for this, but the main one is the increasing workload placed on the active members of the committee becoming to great. With ever increasing financial, administrative, logistical and bureaucratic pressure being placed on the small group organising the festival, we feel it's time to call it a day.

The first festival was held, in part, to celebrate the arrival of the replica of Captain Cook's ship "The Endeavour" to Whitby in 1997. Since then the festival has been very successful being held on the 1st May Bank Holiday weekend each year.

2009 will be the 13th Moor & Coast Festival to be held in Whitby.

The final Moor & Coast Festival will be from 1st to 3rd May 2009. We have a great line up, inviting some of our friends who have appeared at past festivals. They include Vin Garbutt, Jez Lowe and Kate Bramley, Elbow Jane, Tom McConville, Something Nasty in the Woodshed, George Welch, Anthony John Clarke, Ember, Dan McKinnon, The Young'uns, Workshy Profits, Copper Kettle and many others…

Details can be found on our website which will be updated very soon…

Best of luck with it Glen. Still sobbing quietly that you didn't have room for us after all - but hope you have a grand time anyway - that's a great line up. I've always really enjoyed the fest and thanks for all your support over the years, specially for having The Piper Sons. T

Glen
Its a great shame, but a man has to do what a man has to do.
I have always thought that the Moor & Coast Festival was one of the best. You and the rest of the committee and helpers have worked bloody hard and I don't think anybody can thank you enough for what you have all done.
Thank you also for being so kind to my family and I over the few years that we have been up there. That has never been forgotten.
I hope that the 2009 festival is a great success.
Best Wishes
Les Worrall

Apart from it clashing with Upton FF Whitby is a long way from my local FFs. I never made it. So maybe Upton will benefit - though I suspect people will, in future, be cutting down on things generally.

Probably nicer than me, and certainly a better speller.

Hi there T/tent, thanks for that. i'm not being precious, but it just might lead to confusion.
Never made it to the Moor and Coast, but my old friend Jim McDonald often did, and spoke very well of it.

Seems a shame. Maybe it will be resurrected in the future.

We have a plan to put on an event in 2010 but it will be much smaller and not so concert based... and not called Moor & Coast Festival. As soon as we know the plan we will let all parties know...

I'm so sorry to hear about this. Would it not be possible just to cut it in size and expense? Like this maybe? After all, most of us have no money these days, but we still have our voices to sing, our fingers to play and feet to dance. We need music to give us strength and merriment!

Dear God did I just say that? Must be losing my marbles.

Thanks Sal for that... Yes we are planning a smaller event in 2010. At the moment it's going to be called the "Whitby Spring Session" and will be held on the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May. All at low cost (for us and the customer)

cheers

Is that the old Cleepthorpes Weekend before it's closure? Still a chance of Rain but out of the Footy Season and into Mick and Liam Haywoods Birthday Weekend.

Yes it's the old Cleethorpes weekend...   Have already spoken to Mick about it with our initial plans....

It's also out of the rugby season so hoping to use the local rugby club as a venue and camsite...

The dates will be 28th, 29, and 30th May 2010 with the bank holiday Monday being the 31st May 2010...

Well the Rugby Club is very near Liddle which is good and the Extra money, if any, raised should help the Rugby Club raise funds to refurbish the Showers which are a bit minging.

It will also keep a festval running on the East Coast Bank Holiday. Sound like a win win situation to me!

So minging in fact (as were the toilets), that after camping there last Aug for Whitby week my wife said that she would never camp there again.

Sorry about that LesB. I know how she felt and as one of the stewards on the Rugby Club site we did our best with what we had been given. The Suppliers claimed they had never had any decent loos like we had the first year on that site (although at that point the showers were even worse!)

The ladies loos had come straight off a building site and on Friday morning we were on our hands and knees scrubbing concrete off the floors and walls. They had also failed to provide a key for the fellas to wash.At least last year we had TWO lots of showers - an improvement on the couple of years before when we were running a shared system.

I hope she put on her festival review sheet just how she felt about them. We were encouraging people to so that this point could be made to the suppliers. Considering the weather and the fact that site was run by 8 of us I felt we did quite well. At least there was plenty of loo roll!

The state of the showers on that site is down to Scarborough Council and nothing to do with the festival organisers - although we also kept them as clean as possible.

Tig

It was difficult during 7 days of folk week last year, and the weather didnt help. But there should'nt be a problem with a 3 day weekend festival. Some festivals dont offer any shower facilities over a weekend.

Sorry I was trying to be positive and to say that things could only get better at and for the Rugby Club. The Cabernet Salvinion and Shiraz (Chille14%) at £2.99 it did sell out during Whitby Folk Week (please take note Lidle). It was a superb Full Bodied Fruity Red with a Good Bouquet (I'm talking about the wine here not the showers).

If showers are left to Scarbough Council? Well my understanding of it is that they put the price of visiting the public Loos up last year in Whitby to pay for the much-needed refurbishments to the loos in Scarbough.

The Stewards did a brilliant job it was what they had to work with that's the problem.

It will be a long time before I forget that finish to the Saturday afternoon session with the supergroup ...The Young 'uns Loct'up Together with the Roaring Forties....Someone reported the roof of the Endeavour floating down the river!!    And on Sunday I got my "fix" of Dan McKinnon.   Hopefully next year's "Spring Session" will prove equally superb.
