This is a tough one! The best I could do was to find out a longer title:

HARRY AND CARRIE, OR, HE SIGHED, SHE SIGHED AND THE SEA SIGHED TOO

Other facts are as you describe them.

Sheet music is held by Oxford University and by the British Library. (But you could have assumed that, right?)

(Surely this can't be the same song, but—

Allmusic.com says HARRY AND CARRIE (or HARRY AND CARRY) was recorded by Eddie Cooley & the Dimples (an early R&B group) on their album "Fever 1956-1961" (Hydra CD 27130, 2006) and "Priscilla" (Collectables CD 9937, 2005):

When Carrie saw Harry that same moonlit night,
Carrie looked into Harry's eyes and her heart just took a flight.
Yes, it's love, love, love, same old story too,
'Bout a boy meets girl to make their dreams come true.

So Harry told Carrie: "Never in my whole life
Did I ever meet such a pretty little girl that I want to be my wife."
Yes, it's love, love, love, same old story too,
'Bout a boy meets girl to make their dreams come true.)

Thanks Jim,

I already rejected the 'Priscilla' song - and there are others!

I guess I'll just have to fork out for a copy from the BL

HARRY AND CARRIE

Harry and Carrie at Folkestone
And Harry thought Carrie was nice
In three days the couple were dreaming
Of wedding bells, slippers and rice
Together they wandered one fine afternoon
Along the sea-shore for a nice little spoon
And far from the noise of the town
Upon a big rock they sat down.

Chorus: Harry and Carrie down by the rolling sea
Harry thought Carrie was jolly fine company
Dreaming as they sat there watching the water's blue
He sighed, she sighed, and the sea sighed too.

Upon a big rock, till the twilight
They sat, holding each other's hands
For love-making gave them more pleasure
Than Negroes, or pierrots, or bands
With no one to list to their story of love
Excepting the sea-gulls which soared up above
And quickly the sunny hours passed
The tide too was coming in fast.

Chorus: Harry and Carrie down by the rolling sea
Harry thought Carrie was jolly fine company
Funny tales he told her - oh what a lot he knew
He roared, she roared, and the sea roared too.

But all of a sudden the sweethearts
With faces as white as a sheet
Saw they were surrounded by water
The tide had cut off their retreat
No boatman to save them, no coast guard in sight
They sat on that rock far into the night
Soaked through by the sea and the rain
Until the tide went out again.

Chorus: Harry and Carrie down by the rolling sea
Harry thought Carrie was jolly fine company
Five long weary pours they sat there - oh what a nice to-do
He howled, she howled, and the sea howled too.
