I'm thinking of travelling to Spain and/or Ireland this year (by car), and would love to plan it around music and/or song festivals. NOT the really huge ones (as in Womad, Glastonbury, etc) - the smaller/more local, the better!

If you know of any specific good ones, or if you know of any websites listing festivals in these countries, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks! :)

The Cork folk festival in Ireland is on every year and starts 01 Oct 2009 - 30 Oct 2009.

Sponsored by Beamish, brewers of the famous Irish stout, the festival presents the best local, national and international folk music, attracting artists from all over the world in celebration of Irish native music, singing, song making and storytelling traditions. Irish dancing is very popular, with Irish dancing and set dances indigenous to Cork taught in special workshops, as well as other styles, like clog dancing and the Cajun two-step. Players of traditional instruments - like the button accordion, fiddle, pipes, flute and whistle - demonstrate their skills, and keen musicians can participate in master-classes in these instruments. Cork itself has a wonderful range of shops, restaurants and pubs, all providing fresh local produce and there are many buildings of historical and architectural beauty to visit as well as enjoying all the festivities

Well, the dates kind of depend on when the festie(s) is/are... that's why a list of some sort would be good... but equally any recommendations welcome.

Also - I'm particularly interested in doing some song/voice workshops/master classes while in Ireland, so any info on those would be great too.

The trip will probably be 3-4 weeks long or so, between April and October.

Incidentally, if anyone's interested, Fiona Mackenzie is running a 5-day workshop in gaelic (scots) song in Spain in late April. No prior knowledge of gaelic necessary.

Anyone know where to find interesting (mainly Spanish) music in Malaga or Granada in late March?

There is the Joe Heaney Festival in Carna, Co. Galway, usually the first weekend in May. Fairly small festival with lots of local singers and musicians and a fair few top notch singers from many other places. Everyone seems to be dedicated to sean-nos (old style) singing and the inspiration is thrilling. (Bah, words fail me, literally.)

Cheers,

David

Probably not what you are looking for but the festival at Ortigueira has top notch performers and has the great advantage of being free.

As far as Antequera/Malaga is concerned this is hard. There may be some flamenco in the area but it would be hard to locate at a guess.

My local pub in Almunecar about 60 miles away had spanish music nearly every night of the week from local gypsies and others. The highlight of my time there was an evening with Gerardo Nunez. There is a flamenco festival there (or was) which was why Nunez was there - around June/July. But having taken a look I couldn't find out when it is.

Sorry Jack best I can do.
