Untested (though I am trying on one myspace page) but...

According to the book I have - there is NO way to convert a band account to a regular MySpace account (but who would want to?) but there may be a way to make a Band Account from an ordinary one.

MySpace offers a conversion tool at http://collect.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=BandProfile.convert - it definitely still exists.

Sign into MySpace then visit this URL. Fill out the fields on each of the tabs to complete the conversion.

Caveat! At the date of publication of the book the tool had only proven to work sporadically.

I am reading a book on myspace at the moment and according to that there is a conversion tool which will convert from one to the other but which has had mixed results for people. I'll post up a link to it once I have access to the book.

Much simpler I found was just to friend-request the whole lot rather than try via bulletins first. Otherwise you've got to make lists of who has or hasn't come back to you... Still fiddly, but simpler.

Make your new page first, whilst keeping the old one as it is.

Then, when you've finished it, send a message to all your 'friends' on your old page, via a 'bulletin' with your new Myspace address in it, along with a warm invitation to join.

Those that don't come back, send them a 'friend' request as you would do normally, from your new page. Not everyone reads their 'bulletins' so some simply won't know you've changed. Just write a short "Hi, this is our new page, please join us' note to the friend request when you make it, and Voila!

Fiddly, but doable.

And to cancel your page, look in the 'edit page' details under 'Account'....simply press 'cancel' then Myspace will send a verification email to the original email address you used to open the page in the first place....activate this, and in a few days your old account should disappear.

"Civilians" can put any track from a MySpace music page on their own page's player by clicking the "add" button next to that track on the artist's page.

I made the same mistake as everyone else and opened the civilian page first, but didn't actually have any problems deleting it, although you do have to wait 48 hours before opening the new one, so perhaps they've overcome that problem.

I overcame the problem of the email addresses by opening a free Hotmail account specifically for the second site I wanted to do, and I've now got two , one for myself and one for the duo I play in, and am about to do a third for a charity project I'm involved in.

I did have some problems finding the "Artist Sign-up page" so here it is:

http://signups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=signupBand

To load up music files, you'll need to convert them to MP3s and go to "Edit Profile" then "Manage Featured Songs"

Yeah Been there done that.

As Stewart says above, Myspace just disregards the e-mail system that they have.

I keep asking for my regular one to be removed, but it 's still there.

I have however posted a message on that one to tell people that they are on the wrong one and should go to the Music one.

That seems to work as the regular one never get any hits now.

While I have bumbled around in the "civilian" area of Myspace, I've been reluctant to "join in" there, since I've yet to find anyone who has anything to say that isn't copied from somewhere else - - or whose friends do anything except post smart-ass "pasties" copied from websites whose only purpose seems to be to provide inane "clips" you can "paste" to your friends' pages. Conversation, or even "preaching your own one-sided opinions," if any happens, is invisible.

A majority of pages I've looked at do have "background music" and many people have "play lists" of their favorite obsessions, so there evidently is a simple way (simple enough for the simple-minded) to link in music and video clips. The method appears to require pasting a "juke box" application into your own page and then loading the songs you want to have playable on your page into the application.

Videos, so far as I've seen, appear to require a separate pasted in "Application" for each separate clip.

I have seen several instances of "This link has been disabled" where a copyright or other conflict was detected by Myspace administrators, or by complaints to the source providing the clip-ins.

I've seen a few mothers who've inserted sound clips of their kids' bands, and a few people who've indicated affiliation with performing groups (some even with recognizable names), so there is a way to do it. But attempting to "advertise" a music activity in the unclassified part of Myspace seems (to me) a bit like just putting your phone number on a public restroom wall.

The separate music section would be a better place, I would think.

John

I did exactly the same thing. I found the cancel button, and set up again with a second email address. It takes a few days, but they do give you the option to switch back to your original email address to use with thwe new site. We have set up two Myspaces and use a third that we have inherited. As they are all folk clubs we have many of the same friends on all of them. One small hitch is that they have to go under the heading of bands, and some real friends have barred bands from friend applications. Sometimes i think that the mailboxes are interchangeable too, but that might just be me getting muddled. On the whole it works very well.

Just been there, done that!

I first opened a regular MySpace, not realizing that I should have opened a Music/MySpace. It's not possible to just transfer one to the other. You have to first delete one and then open the other.

If you have another email address to use you can open the new one with that (you also need to use a different page name - myspace.com/name), but not with the original email address until the first one is deleted.

Under "My Account" then "Account" there is a button at the bottom of that page to delete the account. This then has to be confirmed in an email from MySpace. I did that, but never got the confirming email.

So then I contacted MySpace help and they told me to do just what I had done before, but it didn't work. After several go-arounds I then deleted all information (My Profile, etc.) from the MySpace account, and notified them again that I had done that. Finally, several weeks after my first attempt to delete, they finally closed my account. It's not easy!

In the meantime I had already opened a Music/MySpace account under a new email address (using a different page name), and set it up. But I don't think there's any way to transfer "friends" from one account to another.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

open mike: I am not sure about the facilities on the ordinary(civilian) site, but I believe the serious difference is that on the music site you can put up six music tracks (to advertise your own music,if you are a musician, or visiting bands, if you are a venue). I am told that if you have the basic ordinary myspace you can't do that.

I discovered, to my own cost, that once you create a NON music site, it has to be cancelled;if you want a Music site - it CANNOT be transferred.
It was - I remember, a bit of a hassle, but it worked in the end.

I didn't tell anyone about my first efforts, so I had no Friends.

whats the difference between adding your own home made music or files of commercially available music? i often go to people's my space pages where a song loads and plays (whether i choose it to or not) often some sort of rock or rap song..

i would like to be able to post audio files of my own music on my site
i can and do have videos..which is a feature available on the regular people's myspace site...(civilian?)

Good luck to them - from my few weeks experience in starting to run a night its hard work - I never want to see another events listing site - but the first night - when people actually turned up - made it worth while. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed it cotinues as well as the first night.

Hope the MySpace problem can be resolved but I suspect it may mean starting again.

If you go to "account", there is a place to cancel it. I am loath to advise my friends to cancel and start again, as they have already got going and acquired some friends...but I think they better had get out, before they go too far and waste too much time.
So, if nobody comes up with a way of transferring friends to a music site in the next few minutes, I had better tell them to cut their losses and cancel.
They are, incidentally, the two young people I know who are starting a NEW folk club in London(as mentioned in another thread), so they deserve all the help we can give them!

I have not discovered how to delete the old page mate.
I just sent new friend requests, and explained it was because I was stupid, that I had to ask again.
Amazingly, people believed me ;)

But can they transfer friends or anything? If not, shouldn't they just delete the whole page and start again from scratch with the same email address?

I have done it, you need to have more than one e-mail address to do it though.[I think]
You just register again on the music side. Same name etc etc.

I'd like to know that too Greg! I didn't realise there were two types of space and wondered why I only had one track to play with! Fortunately I realised in time to set up my music venue page.

The answer to this is probably very simple, but I don't know the answer. Someone has just asked me, and I couldn't tell them, but I'm perfectly sure some Mudcatter will.
There are two kinds of Myspace, you can be in the music bit or the common people bit. If you are in the music bit you can have six tracks to listen to and lots of videos and things. If you are in the civilian bit, there isn't so much fun stuff. So, if someone has set up an ordinary person's page by mistake, acquired a few friends etc, then realised they really should be in Myspace Music. Can you transfer(if so how?) or do you have to close down, lose your friends, and start again?
