That sounds great Alan, very ambitious! Will the transmission be live or will there be a time delay for vision and sound mixing? If its going to be live you must have quite a team of people mixing pictures and sound!

At last folk gets the air time it deserves!

It would be good to get your reactions on this. My first request to our techies was that I wanted people on site in caravans and motorhomes with TV's to see the main stage show. I can remember putting kids to bed or baby sitting and having to miss my favourite act. With the up-link and WiFi, a good number of people shouldn't have to miss anything (at least in Marquee One). This can now happen if you are carrying a laptop or phone with an broadband internet connection.

The fact that anyone on the planet can get a free show is a bonus.

Our technical team have given us a new opportunity this year. We are going to web cast live from the festival via a satellite uplink. We have booked seven days of satellite time and it will be possible for the festival to provide a very good band width to the satellite and then what should be a decent band width on the internet for live coverage to anyone in the world. All of our main stage marquee concerts should be available in sound and vision on your computers. This is a very new project and somewhat experimental this year but it is certainly what we have been aiming for, for some time. We have yet to get agreement from all of our artists but we hope this can be done without too much trouble. All licenses are being arranged with PRS and mechanical rights. A new page on the festival web site will offer access to the web casts.

We will also provide a free Wi-Fi zone on the festival site this year. We are yet to discover the exact zone coverage on the site but it will be provided from the back stage area at marquee one (which is where the satellite dish will be sited).

As you will probably already know we will be using large screens (10' x 7.5') either side of the stage in the main stage marquee this year and will site those twin plasma screens used last year at one of the rear entrances. This is to keep the front entrances relatively clear. We will also provide (the same as last year) a plasma screen in the bar.

If you have any questions, stick em' on this thread and I will pass them on to our technical team for reply.

Rachel's just been here at Salford University in the last three or four days, in the recording studios putting some tracks down with her Manchester Jazz combo.

I didn't know about the Red Socks outfit - I agree - they're good. And she's a young lady with a great personality to match her talent. Well worth a booking at Shrewsbury or any other festival.

One artist to add to the 2009 festival list. John Jones (our patron) will give us a "solo" performance, with friends, of course, (and there are plenty of them on-site this year) on Monday afternoon (31st August). Having just listened his solo album "Rising Road" I think we are in for a rare treat.

I think we are in for a very special festival this year, the Darwin Song Project, lots of well known artists, but equally, a lot of artists not usually seen on the English folk scene, an ever growing dance contingent, and an opportunity to see many artists in a more intimate setting. The new Sabrina marquee will seat 300 this year and will feature some well established performers.
Talking of Sabrina, there is a new festival in Bridgnorth this year (7th-8th-9th August) at the White Lion, home of the Bridgnorth Folk Club. It carries the title: Sabrina Festival. It will be very small but I'm sure it will be fun and I'm told it is free. Our good friends Ian & fee Carter-Smith are part of the organising committee, so it really should be fun. www.whitelionbridgnorth.co.uk will give a guide.

We have taken a bit of time out as one of our number has been unwell but we're back on track and fairly busy again now. We've just returned from playing five gigs in the Perpignan area of south-west France. We spent a bit of time playing with a group of Catalan musicians and we got a bit of sun as well!

Last week we played an Amnesty benefit concert in Bishop's Castle.

We wish we were at SFF again this year - we had such a great time, and reception, when we were on there a couple of years ago. Next time maybe.

Shrewsbury folk festival will be presenting the Darwin Song Project at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury on Thursday 19th March. Already sold out, the evening concert featuring Chris Wood, Karine Polwart, Jez Lowe, Stu Hannah (Megson) Rachel McShane, Emily Smith, Mark Erelli and Krista Detor will be broadcast mid morning on Radio 4 on the 27th March.

The project has been brought together by festival director Neil Pearson after many months planning. The whole concert will be repeated at the festival in August and will offer a unique opportunity to see all of these artists working together presenting songs with a Darwinian theme.

The project is planned as part of Shrewsbury's celebrations of the bicentenary of Darwin's birth (in Shrewsbury). In fact Darwin's house overlooks the festival site on the West Mid Showground so the event could not be more appropriate. A CD will be recorded at the Theatre Severn concert and will be available in a couple of month's time and certainly at the festival.

The good news is on the web site but I just thought I would point out that Chopper, who plays cello & base with the Oysterband, is bringing over a Swedish dance ensemble for the festival this year. Chopper lives in Sweden now and during a conversation last year at the festival suggested that he could bring a group of musicians he plays with in Sweden over to Shrewsbury for a concert and a dance. So prepare yourselves for Malmabyggdens Spelmän. Chopper is also bringing two dance instructors, so we will have some workshops before we go into full dance mode.

There will be eight dances this year with a variety bands including Old Swan, Asha, Steamchicken, The Watch and All Blacked Up. The dance side of the festival has taken great strides in the last couple of years under the supervision of Sue Barker our dance director. Sue selects all of the bands and all of the Morris sides and alternative dance groups for the festival and does a brilliant job for us.

Looks an interesting line up so far - plenty of new names - I wonder if SoH will top the set they did last time - one of the best gigs I have seen.

It would be good if you still had space for a couple of the best songwriters & performers around at the moment - Tom Bliss & Roger Davies. That would make my attendance absolutely guaranteed!

Looking forward to seeing the dance band line up and hoping Tickled Pink & Glorystrokes (fantastic last year) may be included.
