For kids, I sing "Blow the Man Down" (policeman version) and after the main story is done, sing:

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
(Way, hey, Blow the man down)
Yellow and porous, absorbent is he!
(Give me some time to blow the man down)

This is usually good for a laugh, but be ready for them to shout "Sponge Bob Squarepants!" over the refrain.

Other real shanties good for kids (just off the top of my head) include:

Drunken Sailor
Roll the Old Chariot
Donkey Riding
South Australia

Much as I love the C. Fox Smith material referred to above, I do not think much of it would be appreciated by kids. YOU should go look at it, though. (grin)

Couldn't find any lyrics, so I went to their website and sent them an email with a link to this thread, asking them for lyrics. They look like a REALLY fun "crew."

Tink, give a listen to the snippet BOOM Shiver Me Timbers to the tune of Chim-chiminy. Sounds like a hoot and the kids would know the tune!

I seem to recall that Dan Zanes did a cd w/kids singing some of this stuff; there was a cute kid singing "All For Me Grog"

Some of these might be too long/involved? for littler kids, but this fellow says his versions are all "G" rated: click. I found that in a google search.

I'm hosting an "after party" for 2-6 year olds who will be participting in Chocolate Chip Chamber Music's A Pirates Treasure of Trumpets. I want to use a couple of shanties so they are getting "real pirate" music rather than disney music.
