A friend sent me this absolutely breathtaking video of Iceland:
Click

There is a group playing haunting music, which is named in the comments as "Sigur Ros." Apparently they are a well-known group in Iceland. I'm hoping someone can tell me what their name would be in English? Skarpi? Anyone?

What an amazing country, and an absolutely beautiful sky!

(The video is slow to load, but well worth the wait.)

Wikipedia answer to your question

Their name is taken from Jónsi's younger sister Sigurrós (which when translated into English means 'Victory Rose'

My husband really likes their music. I am like it too, but it is a mood thing.

He discovered Sigur Ros while rating Godspeed You Black Emporer on Rate Your Music. I think the site flags up other bands you might like based on the ones you rate.

god it is too early for me to be wrting I am like it too....

What is that?

I should also mention that I don't like Godspeed You very much at all. But that's just me. Anyway I thought I should put some links in for stuff I mentioned above.

VT, your husband sounds like my kinda guy! Sigur Ros, Godspeed - absolute genius! Make sure he checks out Godspeed-related projects A Silver Mount Zion and Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra. And unrelated but lovely, Explosions in the Sky.

None of which of course has anything to do with folk or blues, but hey! Spank mah butt and call me a womble.

Hey Spleen. He has Explosions on his wish list. He has listened to the bits of the Silver Mount Zion's, not as impressed by them as with Sigur and Godspeed. However, saying that, Silver is also on his wish list.

Going to listen to Sigur Ros right now.

Thanks all. I was impressed with the melding of Sigur Ros's music and the beauty of the Icelandic scenery.

Ross, the video is very slow to load, but worth the wait.

My favorite Sigur Ros song is "Olsen Olsen". I tried to persued my sister to use it as her wedding processional music, but she could not be conviced.

has anyone caught on to the fact that their lyrics are very demonic? talking about the sins of God, and if you look through the lyrics of other songs, you will find that most relate in that way. i am not one to jump to crazy conclusions, but i had heard they were Satanists, after really enjoying their music, so i did some research.

Not sure what video you're referring to above but you may be interested to know that there is a full length movie, called 'Heima' (which means Home) available on DVD, which documents the band's tour of free gigs around Iceland in the summer of '06. Stunning locations which fit together very well with their sound track. Oh and you'll catch a glimpse of some genuine Icelandic kvæðalög (that´s traditional singing to you and me). More info available at:

http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/band/disco/heima-dvd.php

Outside of the folk world, over in the alt rock / indie / whatever world, Sigur Rós are a big draw and here in Iceland they are almost a national institution.

Oh and by the way they are 4 very nice, ordinary blokes (I´ve met them and drummers Dad is good friend of mine) their down to earthness also comes across in the film. The B.S. above about the band´s religious inclinations is exactly that, B.S.

Ordinarily I'd honor the moderator's request that no response be given to the false allegation above of satanic content (27 Jan 07 6:13 PM), but I surfed onto this discussion today while tracking down information on "Olsen Olsen" and I believe I can help put the falsehood to rest.

I found two credible webpages today stating that the vocals in this song are in Hopelandic, an invented language -- more accurately defined as a set of vocables carrying no meaning -- common to other pieces of music by Sigur Ros. Says Eren Livingstone in a track review at the "al niente dal niente" blog, "An interesting note about this invented language is that it doesn't have words, meaning or any context, but instead a focus on sound, syllables and melody. This really brings to light one of the best things about this band: how Jónsi Birgisson's vocals are really more like an instrument itself than a method to portray a message (although they still put meaning and messages into their lyrics). He uses his voice effectively to create a very happy and playful sounding song."

I would concur that "Olsen Olsen" sounds very happy and playful. Since its vocables carry no meaning, I would only add there is nothing satanic about it whatsoever.

Demonic? Begob! Sigur Ros themselves say the language they speak is an invention of their own, as far as I remember, so unless you're fluent in SigurRossian, I admire your abilities, GUEST!
