Subject: Grace Notes(UK group)-tell me about them From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jan 09 - 03:25 AM I stumbled across an album titled Red Wine & Promises by the UK group Grace Notes, and I really like it. Beautiful a cappella harmonies, and well-chosen (mostly traditional) songs. I found three Web pages about them: Members of the group are Maggie Boyle, Lynda Hardcastle, Helen Hockenhull. I'm familiar with Maggie Boyle, former wife of Steve Tilston; but I know nothing of the others. Can you tell me more about these wonderful singers? Do they ever perform in the U.S.? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Grace Notes(UK group)-tell me about them From: The Borchester Echo Date: 22 Jan 09 - 03:37 AM GraceNotes combined with the former Witches of Elswick to form an occasional 7-piece called (unsurprisingly) WitchNotes. Maggie Boyle's MySpace has more information, as does Three's Company which again redirects you to Ms Tolfrey's Skinnymalinks for bookings. |
Subject: RE: Grace Notes(UK group)-tell me about them From: BB Date: 22 Jan 09 - 04:13 AM Helen Hockenhull used to be a member of Muckram Wakes with her then husband Roger Watson, amongst others, then a member of New Victory Band, also with Roger - that was back in the '70s. After that she worked with Susie Adams, another member of New Victory, and then wife of John Adams, Mudcat member and EFDSS spokesperson on here until recently (I believe he's had to retire from the EFDSS National Executive having served his time). Linda Hardcastle is a member of the Bacca Pipes Folk Club in Keighley, W. Yorks., as are they all. Grace Notes has been going for a good few years now, and the group is never less than superb. A wonderful blending of voices, imaginative and beautiful arrangements, with judicious use of keyboard, flute and percussion - stunning! I never tire of hearing them. Oh, and no airy-fairy girly voices - definitely strong women! Don't know if they ever cross the pond - they're a bit restricted as Helen and Linda both have day jobs. Barbara |
Subject: RE: Grace Notes(UK group)-tell me about them From: GUEST,dillie Date: 22 Jan 09 - 07:16 AM I saw them at Chippenham last year - in an intimate /small venue where they gave a long feedback / background to each song they sang, it was the highlight of the weekend for me. I really enjoyed their sound, and felt I was among friends. Fabulous voices as you say. Charlotte |
Subject: RE: Grace Notes(UK group)-tell me about them From: Willa Date: 22 Jan 09 - 07:16 AM A wonderful trio, Joe. I'm surprised that you didn't come across them when you visited Whitby, as they are usually there. I have 'Down falls the day', their second album and would reccomend it. Their third one, 'Northern Tide', is named for and contains Linda Kelly's lovely song of that name. |
