Being English and living in New Zealand disqualifies me from making any comments on matters cowboy, but I do think there was a bit of possibly unconscious humour (OK, humor) in Open Mike's original list under "G"...

"GUN, GREAT DIVIDE"

Pure Americana,that!

Y -- YONDER (allus looking for something out yonder.) Also, I believe that Louis L'Amour used a neologism, "to yonder", meaning to just keep going, perhaps without a specific destination in mind; just getting further on away from civilization.

Well, when my son was little, and we used to play the alphabet game in the car while on a long drive (where you call out names of things, one for each letter, as soon as you see them, in alphabetical order) we used to say that when you came to X, you could use words that start with "ex-".

Exhaust ...

Actually, come to think of it, there aren't that many nouns that start with "ex-" either. Most are either verbs or adjectives. So I guess you have to allow noun phrases, i.e. adjective + noun.

I know not all the posts in this thread are about songs, but several are (The Cowboy Alphabet Song, Alice's link to the audio at the San Xavier Mission site, the Tom Paxton song), so I'm wondering why this thread isn't 'above the fold' (in the Music section).

Cayuse were/are an Indian tribe, I believe in northern Washington, with a rep for mean and ornery. And "ornery" is another good term.

The song "Strawberry Roan" has some great terminology.

If your cattle got the "collywobbles" you were in for a long night. If YOU got the collywobbles, head to the slit trench and hunker down.

Worthless was not worth a hoot or a holler.

The perennial sidekick of TV western heroes was Gabby Hayes and he could really run a string of purely western verbiage when prompted. One of his favorites was "I'll be hornswoggled."

"Tin star" was derogatory for a lawman and "Tin-horn" was a swindler or a phony.

From: open mike

Something Awful

as in: MY PONY KNOWS THE WAY by Tom Paxton

The Chisholm Trail became the road to Disneyland
After Billy the Kid, came Lash LaRue
The only longhorn left are in the movies
The only buffalo left are in the zoo

CHORUS:
But my pony, my pony knows the way back home
My pony loves his stall and he wants his hay
This night air just might sober me some
My head is poundin' like a Cherokee drum
But my pony, my pony knows the way

Friday evenings, I go into Tahlequah
Where I get myself a haircut and a steak
I buy myself a pint of something awful
Go and make another big mistake

REPEAT CHORUS

Halfway home, I sometime get this feeling
Wond'rin' why I'm still alone tonight
Then I check the bottle in my pocket
And if it ain't empty, I'm alright.

vittles? Occasionally seen in western novels. The coosie might not understand.
The usual word was chuck.

And to the old cowboy, a critter was a cow. Varmint OK for vermin.

They're not alphabetized because a computer can find a single word faster than I can alphabetize the list. Besides, I didn't feel like doing it.

I'd love to be in Elko, but rooms are booked solid at least a year out -- and I'm down with Something Awful anyway.

"Lonesome" means "big, empty spaces", as in "out in the Big Lonesome."

If you want a good rodeo name, try Freckles Brown:

FRECKLES' ADVICE
©Baxter Black

Though Freckles is an angel now, he ain't forgot his friends.
He drops to earth and hangs around behind the buckin' pens.
He pulls a rope or just makes sure a rider gets bucked free.
So I took it as an honor, the day he spoke to me...

"I saw you ride your bull today. You sure did yourself proud.
You had him by the short hairs, I could feel it in the crowd!"
"I really should be thankful that I even stayed aboard.
You could'a done it better, Freckles...I'm lucky that I scored!"

"Hey don't be puttin' yourself down! You know you did okay.
The time will come when you look back and hunger for today
When everything was workin' right and judges liked your style,
Your joints were smooth, your belly flat and girls liked your smile.

"Cause in between the best you rode and the last one that you'll try
You'll face your own mortality and look it in the eye.
There ain't no shame admittin' you ain't what you used to be,
The shame is blamin' Lady Luck when Father Time's the key!

So if they know you came to ride and always did your best
Then hang your ol' spurs up with pride, 'cause that's the acid test
And, say some gunsel offers you a 'Geritol on Ice,'
Just grin 'im down, 'cause you don't have to ride Tornado twice!"

Yep, and if one wanted a good rodeo name, he could try "Stoney" Lonesome. 'About as good as "Slim" Pickens.

calaboose - n. {a corruption of Spanish calabozo }: prison, jail

hoosegow - n. {from Mexican Spanish jusgado }: jail

Seems them ol' cowboys needed a lot of names for the same place.
