Thoroughly enjoyed his shows at Cheltenham. We went to four and he hardly repeated any material. A very engaging and talented man.

Jeff unerringly portrays scenes from the everyday life of America a century ago. Soldiers, sailors and farmers are all faithfully brought back to life, and appear in your mind like an old fashioned movie.

There's a sprinkling of new songs and fiddle tunes amongst his established favourites, though I suspect that his show will be different every night.

Well worth trudging through the snow to hear!

Dave:
It's going well so far, after two gigs in some of the worst winter weather England has experienced in nearly 20 years. I was seriously worried about going out last night, but we took our courage (and a shovel) in our hands and were rewarded by anenjoyable gig in Stockport. A couple of nice comments about it on the other JD thread.
The Tiger the night before was good, too.

Sorry to hear about your wife, Al, and a shame you couldn't get there.

Lewes next (Thursday), then Tooting and and Cellar Upstairs over the weekend.

Best wishes to you both with the tour - sorry I couldn't lend my support at The Tiger - my wife is very ill at the moment and I can't leave her.

Jeff is certainly meeting English weather at its most dramatic. I hope it soon calms down for him.

In the British Isles he may be Davis, but on Bainbridge Island he's Davies forever:)

Jeff has certainly travelled in the right direction with cable at its current rate.

I've got the choice of Stockport on the 2nd or Uppermill on the 11th. It's a difficult decision - perhaps the answer is to go to both!

Best wishes Henry

Just to let everyone know that the eagle has landed - Jeff has arrived and succesfully negotiated UK immigration (thanks to the efforts of Jacey Bedford in mastering the new and rather chaotic foreign worker approval system).

We're looking forward to seeing Keith and Sylvia and Dave S at the Tiger on Sunday.

Thanks for that Sylvia - just to mention that Sunday will be Traditions at the Tiger's 18th Birthday so as well as presenting Jeff(which we are all looking forward to)we'll hopefully be including a few other special items.

Keith and I will be seeing Jeff on Sunday at the Tiger Folk Club in Long Eaton.

I'm sure those of you who know Jeff will not miss him. If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing and hearing him, you must try to get to one of his gigs while he's here. It doesn't happen very often (not as often as I'd like) and you won't be sorry.

Cheers

Sylvia

Cold, foggy and miserable (though probably not as cold as you are, Tim).

Yours should be a good CD!

Jeff Davis - North American singer, fiddler, banjo, guitar and mandocello player par excellence - will be arriving in the UK tomorrow to begin a series of dates.

Full details can be found at jeff's UK web pages but, briefly, he will be visiting Long Eaton (Notts.), Stockport, Lewes, Tooting, London (Euston), Beverley, Saltburn (North Yorks) and Uppermill (Oldham) before rounding things off at Cheltenham Folk Festival.

Yours truly will be playing some backup guitar and squeezebox for Jeff on the Northern dates, and we have some joint performances scheduled at Cheltenham.

Don't miss Jeff: as fRoots said:
"One of the outstanding performers of the American folk revival.... Jeff has a lovely lived-in voice and he ranges widely through the many strands that make up the American tradition whilst providing exquisite accompaniments on banjo, mandocello, and guitar ...one of the finest old-time fiddle players"

The Living Tradition said:
"Whether singing or playing, Jeff Davis' work oozes class and commitment"

Tour Schedule:

February
1: Long Eaton, Nottingham, Traditions at the Tiger
2: Stockport, Midway Folk Club

5: Lewes, Royal Oak Folk Club
6: Tooting, Court Sessions
