Okay, I know it can be beautiful (it is here right now anyway) but it just sucks big as well. Storm comes in, lotsa' snow, lotsa' gawdamn ICE! Trees are beautiful, the landscapes are lovely, the roads are gawdawful. Every year this happens and some years worse than others...........I tried the more temperate climes but like a dumbass I keep coming home to Ohio..................***SIGH***..............The power has been out for 3 days and just came back on........It used to be an adventure and now its a pain in the ass..............Old age is setting in.

As I've gotten older I've noticed that at times it crosses my mind that there will only be some smaller number of "somethings" left to do--fewer camping trips, fewer Christmastimes......counting down in a way. I guess that might be a bit natural, realizing mortality and all. Generally when one of those thoughts comes along I might feel a bit sad for a minute or two but I tell ya' what........when I consider that the number of winters I have left are equally diminishing it brings a smile and a warm, fuzzy, feeling...............

Fuck winter.

Well, I disagree with both of you.

I just LOVE sliding down the icy hill, the all-wheel-drive skidding; I just LOVE the slush which, overnight, freezes into car-shattering lumps of ice; I just LOVE knowing that I can depend upon other drivers to drive as they should; I just LOVE having the brass monkey banging on the door to be let inside.

WHEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Let's send it all to Ohio and Ontario where they can appreciate it!

Come in, take a hot shower, drink beer and pick a tune or read a bad novel in front of the woodstove.

It's like old age. It can be comfortable if you work with it and don't fight it.

Well after yesterday's dump of 30 centimeters of snow I took my dog and walked 2.9 kl on the street then another 3 kl in the woods where I left him running and playing in lots of snow. I'm not a lover of winter but in my opinion I like the four seasons instead of one which has gotten to me way to hot in recent years. I'm off to Florida in 4 weeks for 10 days and I know i will love it. But I will be glad to be back in the great white north.

Well golly, people. I kinda like winter. Sun doesn't come up until almost 6 in the morning, so I can sleep in easier. It is cool enough to need a jacket or sweater most of the day, so I don't get all sweaty when I go for a long walk in the sunshine. Snow up on the mountain, so I can enjoy looking at it, but never have to get closer if I don't want to. The occasional snow flurry early in the day, to enjoy through the coffee shop window while I have my second cuppa coffee. Even a 3 or 4 inch snow fall every two or three years, to remind me why I don't live in Ohio or Pennsylvania any more. Winter is just fine!!!

I guess like most people I don't like feeling cold, don't like slip/sliding on the ice etc but I don't feel badly about winter or any other season... all part of lifes rich tapestry... If we didn't appreciate how bad Winter can be how would we have learnt to appreciate Summer? At least the seasons aren't boring! They may appear up and down but what the heck? So is the rest of life in this world.

Our power was out for SIX days in our December ice storm. And Wednesday we not only got too much f%#king snow, but about an inch of ice crust on top, thanks to the storm ending in sleet and freezing rain.

Sigh. At least I didn't have to drive in it -- the weather pattern this winter is to get dumped with sucky weather on my day off.

I'm with Spaw -- enough, already! We've HAD enough winter. It can warm up any time now. (Although slowly might be nice so we can avoid Mud Season, which can be almost worse than winter...)

At least you're used to the f*ck*ng snow across the pond. We get it so rarely these days in the south of England that, when we get an inch or so on the main roads, the whole f*ck*ng country grinds to a slow f*ck*ng halt. As if we'd never had f*ck*ng snow before. It makes you f*ck*ng weep to see how badly the f*ck*ng drivers get along with it. People in Scandinavia, who have lots and lots of regular f*ck*ng snow, have a great f*ck*ng belly laugh at us for being so f*ck*ng pathetic.

Actually, I find winter is less fragrant than the thread title would suggest. The cold freezes the cat turds in my garden so that a) I can't smell them and b) they're frozen solid and don't squish into the sole of my boots/shoes if I accidentally tread on them.

Actually, I wouldn't mind snow at all if it didn't fall on concrete, asphalt, tarmac or gravel and stayed on the grass and up in the hills where it belongs.

The mass delusion which takes over the Mudcat Mind this time of year, this fixation on imaginary "snow", is really puzzling, not just because of the nature of mass hypnosis, but that it seems to occur so regularly between December and March every year.

What accounts for this mass delusion? How can so many be fooled so completely for so long, so regularly?

This is an excellent premise for a research paper. Here in Southern California we have managed to achieve a certain immunity, so maybe somebody at UCLA or UCSD should do it.

Hey Linn......We've had alternate ice and snow so its one helluva' mess but its real cold right now BUT.........I think its Sunday the temp is supposed to be up to 40+ with Sun and then fall back to the 10-20 range Monday.

Meaning (for those of you unfamiliar) some of the top stuff will melt leaving an inch of water atop solid ice which makes driving without studs or chains completely laughable. Then it will refreeze making some of the underlayer so hard it will still be wiith us in the Spring.

Know what I love? Those piles of black stuff in parking lots during March and even later that is the remnants of plowed off snow and ice. No matter how old you are, you drive past the things and think, "What the4 hell is THAT?" at least for a second or two til it dawns on you that winter is still melting away..........

Here in Eastern Ontario it was only the fourth time since 1938 that we didn't have a January thaw ie. the temperature never went above 0℃.

It is -31℃ this morning with the wind chill and I'm going out to walk the dog - we're not called crazy Canucks for nothing.

Nice here now. A skiff of snow today. Warming up to 6 and rain on Tuesday. We have had a great winter so far.

A buddy sent me some pics from his buddy in Saskatoon... drifts up to the eaves of the houses. I don't miss storms like that.

I was in England one year around Christmas, and the weather report said that the latest storm produced a lot of snow, some of the drifts were THREE INCHES HIGH! Hell, I've had more snow than that on my window sill during a strong wind, and that was on th INSIDE!

Yesterday, as my colleague Chris looked out the window into the usual bloody Friday afternoon snowstorm, he said, "Il neige des peaux de lievre" -- it's snowing rabbit skins. (He's from a sub-Arctic hamlet in northern Quebec.) Huge, fluffy clumps piling down on the ugly industrial park surrounding our DND office building almost took the Bad Fairy's curse off the place.

But it was no damn' fun driving home, with Ottawa's traffic still swollen by commuters who should be on the bus -- the transit strike is finally over after 51 days in the coldest winter in years, but not one bus will hit the road for at least a week. Most of the main arterial roads were reduced to half their normal capacity by huge snowbanks, and the intersections were all gummed up with churned slush that causes cars with automatic transmissions (and inept drivers) to skid and fishtail. Also, Edmund was driving home from Kingston in the middle of it. I was even more than usually grateful to hear him bumping in the front door with a week's worth of laundry, safe and sound.

Listening to the news last night I had a thought (I don't get many so I thought I would share it)
It's +40 degrees in Ausralia somewhere, it's around -5 to -20 or more(or is that less) if you include wind chill here and has been for at least the last three bloody weeks.
Therefore I propose that weather is like money/wealth, it has a total unequal global distribution.
I therefore propose that Bill Gates sends me some of his money and I will send as much snow as I can to Australia in return for a bit of heat.
Or as Spaw said Fuck Winter.

Or is temperature just as it is with light? All parts of the world end up with equal amounts eventually, just at different times.

Let's see:

Fairbanks, in the interior of Alaska, frequently hits -60 or lower and in summer frequently hits 95F. Average temperature: 77F

Straia: High of 115F, low of 20F. (Does Australia ever sink to 20 degrees?) Average: 67F

Well, Ebb, we live right up near the great Pacific, just behind the shore hills, and we get these nice maritime breezes in summer. The humidity is nerver much of a problem, anymore than that imaginary snow that drives folks in less perfect places into such tizzies.
